I think the song is about how you grow through life, the two "people" that are both technically "you" (past and present) talking to each other. The past you explains that he is the one who got you to where you are today and molded the person you have become now. How he is and always will be there to protect, hide and take the blame for you when you do something bad (You blaming your present actions on your past) Basically to sum it up it's about a person who cant let go of their past and think what they did in the past will always be there to show up in the present and future. Pretty much someone being controlled and influenced by their past self.
