There was something nice about the casts of TV shows doing commercials for the sponsors Something we don't have anymore. It wasn't the same one over and over.
For many years now there's been something illegal about the casts of TV shows doing commercials for their sponsors, which is why we don't have them anymore.
This is far out fantastic! I never knew such a thing like this/these existed. But, with me being born in 1964, no wonder I never saw these before. I was just a baby when these originally aired. Funny, took 57 yrs for me to come upon these by chance, here in August of 2021. I'm fascinated how nice, clear, and sharp looking these old TV commercials are. Amazing. Crystal clear 👍
I was surprised to see that Lucy herself wasn't in any of these, but I guess, maybe, as President of Desilu, it might have been some kind of a conflict for her to have appeared any of her sponsors' advertising clips.
Lucy "excused" herself from any direct endorsement of her sponsor's products while working on "THE LUCY SHOW". She left the "integrated commercials" to Viv and the other cast membes.
Lucy going as far back as the 1930s always had a reputation as being somewhat crude and rough, both in the characters she played and in real life. She admitted that herself, which is why a lot of times she wasn't cast as the lead in movies.
I recently heard Jimmy Garrett on a radio show talking about the Lux soap commercial 5:03 . Apparently Candy Moore had an allergic reaction and her face broke out in red blotches from using it. That is actually whip cream she's rubbing on her face. TV LOL
That would have been a much more fascinating commercial. They could have done an episode about Chris having to break her date Alan Harper because her face broke out!! LOL
And that Swan jingle keeps on ringing and ringing and ringing and ringing in the back of the mind since I heard it in this compilation! (I still wonder why the flip side of that phonograph record was the Swan jingle!)
This is still what we need in the kitchen. Because a lot of us still do dishes by hand. I have a hard time finding something to cut though greasy pots and pans. Even in 2022.
Its very interesting to see these commericals from a modern day lens. Whenever you see a commercial today, or really for quite some time there has to be a bend. A gimick. Like Flow with Progressive. Something that is insane in the commercial. These commercials are so straight forward and simple. I think there is a benefit to that. Sure I like wacky and crazy commercials but the basic way things are done here just seems so ... nice.
Vivian Vance was truly a National Treasure & Desilu Productions made the best possible casting choice when they hired her to work with Lucille Ball. I am quite certain that Vivian Vance was permitted to fly any airline she wished....unlike her 'boss.'
in some eps the children had more screen time during the cast commercials than the actual shows. Lucy was never fond of working with kids. She also hated to have to pay them for doing nothing because their contracts guaranteed them a certain number of shows per season and in S2 especially there were many times that she had to pay them for not working
@@Texaslawhorn It's funny, but Candy Moore was an occasional guest on the Donna Reed Show playing Jeff's girlfriend on several episodes. On the episodes she was in, she had a LOT of screen time, much more than on the Lucy Show, and she wasn't even a regular on Donna Reed.
@@rtususian Yes! I enjoyed Candy on "The Donna Reed Show." She was a good match for Jeff. I thought the same thing about her having more to say on that show and how that seemed odd. Donna was really good about giving Mary and Jeff and their friends screen time and stories. The Stones were my favorite of the '50s/'60s TV families.
@@Texaslawhorn Even though Lucy is my favorite actress of all time, but one thing I did not like about her shows was every single episode had to revolve around her. Some other TV shows allow other characters, regulars or guest stars, to shine, but not with Lucy's shows. It was rare to see characters interacting with each other on a Lucy show without Lucy on the screen, but when they did, they were talking about her!!
@@rtususian True! I'm sure Lucy could have used a break here and there while the other characters were on stage having more of a chance to shine. Oh, well. We still love Lucy! ❤
Prof. (Adrian) Vance indeed. Ha, ha. Veteran character actor Lou Krugman playing him. One of the actors Lucy frequently turned to for supporting roles. When you think of it, there were certain people she must have felt she could count on, starting obviously, with Gale Gordon and Vivian Vance and then the likes of Doris Singleton, Elizabeth Patterson, Richard Reeves, Kathryn Card, Frank Nelson, Mary Jane Croft, and what, seven or eight more, max.
I wonder what the secret was the continuous "sudsing" was. This was before the phosphate ban era. Up to this time, so many of the detergents contained phosphates, which did not break down in water and contributed to water pollution.
I remember laundry detergent oversized tablets, but not Vim specifically. There was another brand with commercials in which a giant hand suddenly thrust up out of the washing machine, holding a box of the tablets in its palm.
It is very obvious that these commercials were shot before they brought the studio audience in, since it's obviously Charley Douglass' laugh machine. And I guess Lucy had a clause in her contract that she didn't have to do the commercials.
@@rtususian Charley Douglass was the inventor of the Laff Box, the first device designed to add recorded audience response to television shows--or a "laugh track." The Laff Box was the prototype for similar devices that are used to this day to add audiences responses to shows that don't have audiences or audiences that don't respond the way producers want them to. Look it up.
Yes, people always remember the Lucy/Mr. Mooney/Mary Jane years as representing the show, but I always preferred the Lucy, Viv & the kids format. It would have been nice to see the kids get older, from 1962-1968.
@@Texaslawhorn Out of all the "homes" the Lucy character lived in going all the way back to 1951 and ending in 1974, my least favorite was the apartment during the Lucy Show Seasons 4-5-6. It just did not have a warm look to it. My favorite for spaciousness was the Ricardo Connecticut home, especially the den on the left side of the stage, and for overall looks the Here's Lucy living room.
@@Texaslawhorn You know how bad it got? During the 4th season, Lucy Carmichael referred to Jerry Carmichael in one of the episodes as "Jimmy", the actor's real name. She kept insisting to the writers that they were wrong, that his character name was Jimmy. After a while they gave up trying to convince her she was wrong. She may have gotten confused because they were using Lucy and Viv's real first names as their character names.

Vivian Vance was a national treasure! She just sparkles on the camera! Such a warm personality and one heck of an actress!
Wish she lead a show of her own.
YES
Your`re right! Viv was fantastic. I really think that she was funnier than Lucy.

The swan jingle is stuck in my head now lol

After watching these vintage commercials I want to go out and buy swan even though it no longer exists lol
2:03 - This happy (but very short) Twist interlude would date this commercial to 1961-'62, when the Twist dance craze was at its peak.
