MESON is not a "museum", it is kind of traditional restaurant. The name comes from french "maison", and it means "house". So it is like a name for the ancient taberns or houses where travellers could stop, have a rest and eat something. In Spain, you find the more frequently in northern Spain.

My thoughts about the relation with french are because in spanish we have other words completly different for house, while "mansion" refers to a huge house for rich people. In galician the use of meson is very extended, and usually its origin is related to the french pilgrims going to Santiago.
People around the world tend to not add as much sugar into deserts as people are used to in the North America. As they have already commented, you have gone to touristic places to eat, and it is kind of hard to resume eating spanish food in only one day. Each autonomous community has its specialities and even provinces and villages have differences. But, being objective, the best food is found in the north of Spain. I think quality wise the best is found in Euskadi and quality-price wise in the province of Lugo. Hope you do some routes in the north of Spain soon, you won’t be disappointed

And if you want to enjoy Spanish gastronomy, don't just visit Madrid. Visit Galicia and Asturias for the seafood and the "cachopo" or the "chuletón". Extremadura for the best "Jamón Ibérico", Andalusia for fish among other things... and the entire Mediterranean coast to try good "Paellas" "alliolis" "Escudellas" "canelons", etc... A gastronomic tour of the peninsula , it can't take you less than a couple of months... xD
if you come to Galicia, in Spain, you´ll gonna hallucinate with our food. I invite you to try our gastronomy based on seafood and fishes, but with very good meat raised in the Galician fields too!
For adding a little bit of history to the “bocata de calamares”, in case anyone had thought why fish is in a typical dish of a place with no sea. When they were fished in the shore and shipped to madrid, which is in the center of Spain, they weren’t already fresh anymore, so for making it harder for everyone to notice it, they would batter and fry them. Obviously this has changed a lot with refrigerated trucks and it’s not (always) made for this reason any more
@@rosab8026dime cuanto te costó la ración y te diré si eran calamares o pota. Y no me digas que allí son más baratos porque el que los pesca sabe lo que le pagan.
The good thing about spain is that the gastronomy changes abruptly from north to south or from East to West. ¡If I were you I would definitely travel to castilla la mancha and give it a try!
So glad to see you enjoying my city Guga!! Those little fish tapas from Mercado de San Miguel (the little toasts with caviar on top) have become one of my go-to everytime I go there (the oysters are also amazing). Its just funny to see one of your favorite youtubers eating somewhere you've been a thousand times 😅😅
Spanish food is delicious. I went to Barcelona a few years ago and it was awesome, & highly recommend the city and it's a lovely country to visit. I had the Chorizos & potato too at a bar next to our hotel and it was so delicious. I've had chorizo here in the UK and it's just not the same. I wouldn't mind going back and probably will one day as it's not that expensive of a holiday from here (I just have other travelling plans).
dont go to Barcelona, that city is turned 180º upside down, the place is turned into a shithole, lots of Moroccan gangs targeting tourists and regular people, beating people up for nothing.
I'm from Madrid and I have 3 things to say about this video: 1- Extraordinary short and fast paced video with a very good selection of our food. 2- El Escarpin and its food and drink (sidra, cabrales, tortos, chorizo a la sidra) it's not typical of Madrid, but from a northern area of Spain called Asturias, with awesome gastronomy (fabada, judiones con almejas, etc) 3- The most typical food from Madrid are "cocido madrileño" and "callos a la madrileña", apart from the "bocadillo de calamares" you also showed. If you didn't have them, you have to come back and try them. You won't regret that! P.S.- Your spanish is not that bad, but you may improve it in further visits. Thanks for the video @Guga
"They fried the churros with olive oil so it`s healthy!" It had me dying 🤣 But awesome Guga, most videos that I see covering spanish food, they go blindly or with some weird posh local, but man you got a proper bocadillo de calamares in a proper bar, you also got some setas al ajillo y jamon and torrijas, that is legit. Still me being from the south I cannot avoid getting somewhat upset that the concept of tapas people outside get is just the one of these some sort of tapas restaurants. Tapas in 99.99% of places in the south, is a ration just like the ones you`ve seen but those 2 euros or even less in some places is for the beer AND the tapa together, that`s the bar culture at least in the south, you go to drink beer and eat at the same time in equal measure 😁Madrid and Barcelona sure have their charms, but me being the Granada, Malaga and Cadiz lover that I am It just breaks my heart that much attention in the same suspects everytime. Hell, Galicia and the Vasque Country both culinary and culturally speaking are amazeballs and so few times mentioned 😢
Que se ha ido al centro, si se viene a Vallekas o Arganzuela es igual que en Ecija. A todos estos les pasa lo mismo, y no les falta la visita al mercado de San Miguel en Sol, una autentica trampa para guiris.
When i went to Madrid this christmas, we had an airbnb directly over that churro place and it was ALWAYS busy! You could hear and see people even at 5am
my man guga made it to my mother's home town! I am SO GLAD you made it to Spain, Spanish cuisine is rich by both history and ingredients, sometimes very close to Italian, french and greek cuisine also. If you ever come by again, do please let me know! I work in hospitality services and I know great places both in Salamanca and Santander, for those meat lovers that you guys are haha
Rule no.1: when visiting a country for its food, do NOT go to the capitals. They're full of touristic cash grabs that lack the traditional flavor kick on their dishes
You're right. 8n Spain, the good and real Spanish food, skip Madrid and Barcelona. Though... Madrid has a lot of great food, because big parts of Madrid is mainly people from Madrid and Spain, fewer foreign tourists
Madrid is not a particularly touristic city by Spanush standards. It also has the best food in Spain. You just have to know where to go and avoid the (tiny) center where the tourists are.
Sugar to churros con chocolate LOOOOOL I expected him to go to the typical tourist traps but El Escarpín is such a nice Asturian restaurant indeed! Glad you enjoyed the visit, next time pick León, Granada, Donosti... those are the greatest places in this country to eat (being this said by a madrileño, indeed...)
As other Spaniards commented, a lot of food is very "region-specific" so one needs to go to restaurants where they serve their food. Madrid has the perk of having tons of variety, so it's viable to find restaurants of all kinds in one metropolis, if you know how to search. Galicias, Asturias-León, País Vasco, Aragón, Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia, Andalucía, Castilla, Extremadura, Canarias... All have their own specific foods that are rarely found on average, outside of some which became popular state-wide (paella, gazpacho, cocido) during periods of political centralism.
Lovely to see you try food from all over the country in Madrid! The ibérico ham place is from Salamanca, the cider restaurant from Asturias and the mushrooms are typical of La Rioja.
these are good examples, for sure, but you can also find lot of premium iberic hams from andalucia, the cider is also really tipical in guipuzcoa (bask country) and mushrooms is famous in all Spain, Specially in the north side (not only in la Rioja). Greentings from bask country!
@@tagachimmo there are many wines and many ciders in the country, each one with its particularities. Anyway, we are not talking about the best but about tipical products and costumes. It is as if i would say that basque country food is better than asturian just because it has more fame... I'd preffer say they are just different.

As a person from here in Spain I can tell you that every part of the country have their different gastronomy, in my case, in canary Islands we have some very good restaurants that we call "Guachinches" where we serve affordable meals with lots of flavor. You can also go to the north part of the country, places like Asturias or Galicia have a very good amount of heavy but tasty foods and you can go to the south part too, the andalucian people sure know how to make good and very tasty food. I'm from Toronto and I've been living in Madrid for 6 years...I would have gladly given you a MUCH better food tour of Madrid. The food here is amazing but you tried the tourist trap places.
There are no real "tourist traps" in Madrid. All these places are fairly decent. Of course, if a restaurant is located in Plaza Mayor, they have to charge more simply because the rent there is higher. You're not just paying for the food, but also for the scenery.
As a citizen of Madrid, I want to tell you that it's a shame the video was so short. Although I understand that to try all the typical foods, you would need many days and several videos. It's been a pleasure to have you as a visitor in this wonderful city that always welcomes foreign tourists with open arms.
Listen, your friend is a criminal not taking you to try the original tortilla DE PATATAS. You might be thinking the spanish omelette is overrated but it's about to experiment the techniques to enjoy how passionated spaniards are with 😜
I like how he presents some restaurant-specific stuff like "regalito de toro" as some universal dish from Spanish cuisine, while it's literally something invented by that restaurant and which no one here ever ate... ... And then he goes to have dinner at an Asturian restaurant and spends half the video eating solely Asturian food, which super-specific to that region, lmao. That's Spanish food, people!

We were in Madrid this week and I was so excited to try your food recommendations. The bocadillos de calamares at bar la campaña are fantastic. To anyone who goes, make sure to get the red sauce and lemon on the side.
I spent about 24 hours in Madrid in January (a side trip from my main stay in Barcelona) and this makes me want to go back so bad. I made the mistake of going to Mercado de San Miguel around lunchtime on a Friday. I'd love to spend more time and take it a little slower than trying to see as much as possible in 1 day (I walked over 40,000 steps that day).
Hey Guga, thanks for your great videos. After watching your videos, I have three requests for future videos: - Please try some other cattle breeds than wagyu and American beef. - How do you clean all your pans and other cooking ustensils so they continue to be so shiny ? - Please cook a foie gras in a terrine using sous vide. And yes I'll repeat those requests often. ;)

Dude, you should go to France! They are the kings of modern western cooking. They take their salt and butter very seriously and judging from your videos, that should be right up your alley. 😊 And you did not taste bread until you’ve gone to a french boulangerie. Its really special. You could take the opportunity to team up with fellow food youtuber Alex for a collab. Im sure he’d love to learn about your steakmaking techniques. Dude Guga, coming from a spaniard: you really got the hang of the pronunciation! Really, really good! Don't let Dani the guide make fun of you for that hahaha
You have to bring the family and go "100 MONTADITOS" GUGA to eat as many tapas as you want. Also come to Cantabria in the North and have some "Cocido Montañes", Cantabrian villages are famous their restaurants serving huge portions, I'm sure you will like it, try Sobarzo village for example (restaurante "La Yerbita"), and you can drive into Cabarceno Zoo with your family afterwards. Santander is the capital of Cantabria and has lots of options too, i like ("Restaurante Mesón Los Arcos").
Nice video!! Enjoy Spain!! By the way, the girl who was telling you 'no more no more' at minute 4:52 is normal for her to tell you, you have spoiled the cider, you only have to hold it once and drink the little that is already in the glass, without giving it again, it is drunk sip by sip, but the process of ''encanciar'' is useless.
And you didn't even try the most classical dishes! Cocido madrileño, potaje, croquetas, and a ton of other traditional dishes. Each region in Spain has a really huge diversity of dishes.
I hope you tasted more things than the ones in the video! You have to try croquetas, ensaladilla, flamenquin, etc and for sure to go to a more modern take on tapas to try the new trends!
As a spanish, I like you enjoyed Spain. Just want to let you know the spanish food is way more than that. You just tried some "tapas", and not the best, in my opinion. Knowing what kind of food you like, you have to try some different meats properly cooked, like the galician cow, the asturian cow or the retinta cow. Best places to try spanish meat are in the north of Spain, but you can find very good ones in all the country. Very different to wagyu, but still very tasty if you know how to cook it. Talking about meats, you should try our lamb (paletilla de cordero al horno de leña), or the "lechón" (little pork). That is incrdeible. In the other hand, fish and seafood. You can find the best seafood here in Spain. Usually you will find that prawns are smaller than in the United States, but very more tasty. If you can, try "gamba de Huelva", "langostino de Sanlucar", "gamba roja de Palamós". I can't talk about different fish, there are plenty of them, but man, I know your channel, I know what you like, please give a chance to the "wild red tuna" the one that is fished in the Strait (of Gibraltar), there in Cadiz. You will be amazed, try these cuts "morrillo", "ventresca" and "tarantelo", they are so tasty and fatty that you will think you are having meat. And, hey, I know you like cheese too, but I think I should stop 😅
Every region of Spain has great food: Cider houses in Basque Country and Asturias are great, roasted lamb from Burgos, roasted piglet from Segovia, octopus and zamburiñas and many other seafood from Galicia, paella and other rice dishes from Valencia. The list is HUGE.
I'm glad you enjoyed our food! Now, for the next time you visit us again, I suggest you take a trip through the south of Spain, like Sevilla, Málaga, Cádiz, etc. The food is really different, and you will try many different things. Also, the north of Spain is incredible, with amazing meat and cheese, traditional dishes, and much more. It's a never-ending experience!

Obviously this has changed a lot with refrigerated trucks and it’s not (always) made for this reason any more
The biggest fresh fish market in Spain is in Madrid. Huge market for restaurants hotels etc

I love Barcelona but it’s way too touristic to eat well easily. Andalusia and the north are way better.
Spain my favorite country in the world all time from Armenia 🇦🇲❤️🇪🇸✝️🙏
I'm from Madrid and I have 3 things to say about this video:
1- Extraordinary short and fast paced video with a very good selection of our food.
2- El Escarpin and its food and drink (sidra, cabrales, tortos, chorizo a la sidra) it's not typical of Madrid, but from a northern area of Spain called Asturias, with awesome gastronomy (fabada, judiones con almejas, etc)
3- The most typical food from Madrid are "cocido madrileño" and "callos a la madrileña", apart from the "bocadillo de calamares" you also showed. If you didn't have them, you have to come back and try them. You won't regret that!
P.S.- Your spanish is not that bad, but you may improve it in further visits. Thanks for the video @Guga
"They fried the churros with olive oil so it`s healthy!" It had me dying 🤣
But awesome Guga, most videos that I see covering spanish food, they go blindly or with some weird posh local, but man you got a proper bocadillo de calamares in a proper bar, you also got some setas al ajillo y jamon and torrijas, that is legit.

Im from spain and i can say that you should try tortilla de patata, its a must to try if you go to spain

Now, for the next time you visit us again, I suggest you take a trip through the south of Spain, like Sevilla, Málaga, Cádiz, etc. The food is really different, and you will try many different things.
