- While all the big players in the TV market landscape are going bigger, brighter, and more transparent, we wanted to know…what happened to small screens?? This CES, Verge producers, Andrew Marino and Becca Farsace, set their sights on finding the smallest screens being showcased at one of the the largest tech conventions in the world. #CES2024 #Technology #TV

I love that this video exists. Many other RUclips channels are focusing on the large blow-your-mind stuff at CES. I appreciate that someone is highlighting the "small" guy making good/great products.
Smaller screens cant be marked up for a huge margin.
You can mark up tablets, laptops, etc. But just displays that will hook into whatever you want and have radio and a digital tv tuner built in? Not easy to charge obscene prices for Thank you Supersonic for tackling that part of the market.
Big thumbs up for talking about small TV's. I live in an apartment built in 1980 so not designed for today entertainment center focus on audio and video. So a 32" TV is about as big as I could fit in the limit space the apartment is designed for in the living room. I can see on the wall in the bedroom where previous tenants had a large TV in there, but kind of a small room for a big TV. Also looking at small TV most don't have the features of the BIG TV's. I think I'm probably going just get a big monitor for my computer and use it as my TV as well.
living in earthquake country, i have a 9" atsc TV in my emergency kit. when the net goes down, your devices wont work. with am/fm terrestrial radio, and OTA atsc, you can still get content. and it works great in the car.
Damn it’s crazy I remember growing up we had a 27” CRT in the family room and that was considered big. As a kid I was in awe of the 32” and 36” screens that we were never able to afford. 13” screens were cheap and ubiquitous.
I mean it was like 2-3x as much material as a 65" tv so yeah it was massive.
When you think about it, our smartphones and tablets have become our portable TVs. Great video and Happy New Year everyone.
Wow. I did not think about that at all. Who knew that one can get such profound wisdom in a YT comment?
Samsung Galaxy View was basically a 18" tablet with Smart TV interface.
You can use a monitor. TV tuners does not matter, when you can use a cable box or a streaming device. But they just don't have speakers. But a sound bar can fix that.
Some people need a small TV, like a 32 inch. They can be in a college dorm, in a small, they have a small apartment, small bedroom, RV. There many reason why people may want a smaller TV.
I have spots where I needed a smaller TV and this is exactly what I did, monitor, AppleTV and Sound Bar, The only minor annoyance is the monitor is not remote controlled.
Not to mention personal tastes and decor. Some people want a TV but don't want it to consume and dominate the living room. TVs aren't pretty, and while there have been attempts to fix that, like the Frame line, or rollable TVs they're not really ideal solutions.
I second this. I have a 32 in HDTV in my living room, and because of how small my house is, it's all I need.
You can get monitors with builtin speakers but they lack a remote for volume control and input selection. So almost there but not quite...
@@soginvl Yes but those speakers are terrible. An inexpensive soundbar solved this for me.
I want to see the data behind "they regret not getting the size up"! lol, what a great marketing line.
SUPERSONIC HOLDIN DOWN THE FORT
THANK YOU
Actually, the most major problem with portable TVs in the modern day is the fact that over-the-air signals broadcast in ATSC digital which is far more dependent on having a strong and steady signal to stay locked on to and keep providing a clear and uninterrupted TV signal. Even the slightest movement of an antenna will affect the clarity of an ATSC signal and could interrupt the channel of cause it to drop out. There is also the issue than an ATSC signal must be strong enough as well to even be able to lock on to in the first place.
Basically mobile internet is serving as a kind of replacement for the ATSC. I’m not saying that’s a good thing
Yes! Now, it's either a perfect signal, or nothing at all! On analogue, we used to have signal in basements. Now, digital signals aren't strong enough.
Manufacturing costs and margins are better with larger TVs. Why get a 42in when you can get a 55in for $50 dollars more.
I never thought about it like that
Because i don't have a big living room
Because apartments are getting smaller and smaller
I think one of the main reasons that this product category has now become redundant is the advent of TV networks streaming their channels live on the internet. So effectively, you can watch TV on your smartphone.
I just want to point out that you don't see non smart appliances either and they are the most commonly bought. You are at an electronics expo, not an electronics shop...
I had a 38" TV that I was perfectly happy with, but then my brother gave me his "old" 52" TV and I gave the "smaller" TV to my sister (her old TV was really old and not working well anymore).
I still have the 21" TV my wife bought for our bedroom, our first flatscreen TV. That one is really big enough for most purposes.
This TV in the living room is great for movies, but it already feels a lot like one of those "conversation walls" from Fahrenheit 451.
A lot of times, I do watch TV on my phone or computer because I really don't need a big screen for what I'm doing.
Kudos to SuperSonic for offering products more along the lines of what I'm looking for.
This reminds me of the complaints about the iMac because the 24" display "isn't big enough." Yeah, it is, for most purposes.
This is great! I think it's such a good question to have asked, judging by all the company responses. But I do think, anything smaller than 32" isn't likely useful to anyone in a household context. And 32" is still well-loved, because all the Samsung Frames still come in that size.
There is nowhere in my lounge to fit a 32" TV (the chimney breast gets in the way), so we have a smaller one (I think it's 27"). The TV we have is useful in a household context.
This video: "I'm not talking about phones, laptops, or monitors."
half of the comments section: "Well what about a phone, or a laptop, or a monitor?"
Holding out for a new 42incher from Sony later this year. I agree, too much emphasis on larger screens . The reality is all these innovations in TV tech are best suited for larger screens. The TV manufacturers feel the technology would be wasted on smaller screens.
Our house isn’t so big. I would love a 40” 120hz tv for gaming.
My family have a nook in our living room that we really like having the TV in. But the last two refresh cycles have been really difficult, because we want a futureproofed TV that'll last but the area can only physically fit a 45" TV max. Sure we could mount a TV and have it fill the wall and go bananas, but sticking to the space constraint it was really hard this past year to pick a good TV with proper HDMI specs, 4K & HDR. Just about made it work this time, but it's going to be very difficult next time around. Glad to see promotion of different sizes for different spaces.
We literally have a hole in the wall designed into the home for tvs in our living room. We've kept our 2009 Magnavox TV because I couldn't find any that would fit in that crevice. Plus, it works so why upgrade?
I saw the thumbnail from a distance and thought it was Michael Fischer, Mr Mobile
I’m an early adopter of Virtual Reality so my tv can be any size I want. Im watching this in a full size movie theater right now.

the grumpy dude at the end is my spirit animal
I agree. Thank you for pointing out that I need a small TV. I am aware of the Supersonic brand but want other options.
I love my 32'' The Frame, even if it doesn't have Dolby Vision nor I can use it with HomeKit because, well, Samsung. Smaller sizes matter! That also goes for my iPhone 13 mini, keep small sizes everywhere!
The HiSense guy hit the nail on the head. The cost to price ratio doesn't make sense for the big manufacturers to sell screens lower than 32 inches in size. There's just not enough money in it. They're happy to leave it up to the niche players.
Nothing used to beat playing Nintendo on a 13inch in your bedroom as a kid in the 90's
I love Becca's storytelling. She's the only best one left in the Verge after Dieter left
wait, nobody else got the "Dude, Where's my Car?" reference? man I'm old.
32 and 42 inch screens are the perfect size for bedrooms, especially in Europe where bigger would just not work. And let's not forget students. 😢
I have forniture that was made back at the end of CRT era, and it's kind of sad that I can fit only a 40" at best (37" would fit better, but they are disappeared) but at that size it's difficult to find something a little more premium...
After seeing an 85 inch TV at my friend’s house, I’m a believer.
I'm running into this same problem trying to replace a TV in the kitchen. The space can fit a 24" TV, though 27" might be possible if I change out the wall mount. I bought a pricy LG and the picture didn't look as good as the 12 year old TV it was replacing. I'm finding not many options on the market and stores pretty much laugh at me when I ask to see some on display.
I might have to settle on a Monitor but with a remote control for audio it gets more complicated again.
This video propels me to search for videos about 1. supersonic TVs, 2. TCL 115 inch TV
I was wondering why you couldn’t find reviews of anything smaller than 32 in places like consumer reports or wirecutter anymore. In some cases, even 24 inch is too much for some spaces.
LCD fabs are being upgraded / replaced with newer and newer generations that allow for larger motherglass, which allows for larger TV panels to be sliced up. As consumer demands grow for larger TVs, there's just not enough demand to waste cutting lots of small panels. So... "Why?" follow the money. and the money isn't in small TVs. That SuperSonic brand is... oof. All rebadged noname junk. Like you mentioned too.. Tablets have pretty much replaced the "small kitchen tv", sure they don't have a tuner, but how many are still needing a tuner?! Most just stream stuff, YT, etc. And those tablets will have way better screens and processors/UIs than those junk small old tvs.
A lot of monitors have speakers built in and a fireStick is like $35. Also people who hate big TVs already own a projector
Best small TV I found is from Best Buy. I have a 22inch Full HD non smart tv from Insignia for my room I bought few years ago. They no longer make that model but replaced with a 24inch Full HD Fire TV for $89.99 on sale. Best value you can buy. The speakers on this is better than my 50 inch Samsung tv.
What was the song at 1:56? I swear I’ve heard that on a moto phone before
Minus the tuner, Samsung is making small "TVs" but they're marketed as smart monitors.
I have a portable LCD TV, Its got an ATSC tuner built in, But the issues with portable TVs is the reception, When you are outside and try to watch certain channels, You might be at an area with poor reception, So you may or may not get the signal coming through.
This is perfect
I bought a small 43" tv my only options were philips and sony. I bought a philips in the end. They were the only companies to make a good tv in that size.
My question is where are all the CRT’s???
Retro gamers have picked them up.
well thats why im saying where are the new ones?!
When I moved out to my first apartment, 28" was as big as they got, however I didn't have the money for one, so I had to settle for a 26", today I am sitting closer to my 42" TV and people are saying it is too small?
My parents have a smaller livingroom then me and just uppgraded from their 65" TV to a 75"
What I really need now is a 14" thin and light TV for my camper, but I guess I have to get a tablet and a USB tuner
Super Sonic playing Shrek on their demo screens. This company will explode.
i have room for 50” tv between windows and now can’t upgrade since tv top oled tvs are 55” up. the 48” don’t have the best tech in them 😅
I still got a nice 42 inch non smart tv from sharp its not a bad tv its great for what I want to use it for like watching movies or playing games on. I really think that over 70 inch is really too big for me. Usually around 50-60 is the sweet spot for me.
42 and 38 are STILL need it!
Also everyone commenting with Tablets or Laptops (or even worse VR) they aren’t really ment to be shared or to stand somewhere where your "old" previous generation 32 inch tv stood
It's the tuners! They are expensive and less and less people use them for OTA - much less for cable (because every TV needs a cable box)
I recall those Samsung monitor and TV hybrids, they're a pretty nice size and support internet TV stuff
It’s probably because no a lot of people watch free to air contents. Most of the contents consumed are from streaming services, so can be watched on tablets and laptops. For better viewing, people prefer to watch in home theatres.
I bought a “small” TV a few years back and paid about as much as I would have for a TV twice the size of
Imao large TVs look so silly in people’s homes. There’s nothing interesting about them to me and I think they bring down the design and comfort of a room. That’s just me though.
I have an 83’ LG OLED and am looking forward to the day I can get a 100” model at a reasonable price.
This wasn’t recorded on a smartphone 😂😂 but I love this video. I want 32 inch 8k tv😭
Small TVs have a place but ignoring "Smart" monitors to say that market isn't being served..idk
Also please explain to me why those "beach TVs" are better than a tablet or iPad (far superior screens, battery life and connectivity)
I am using Google Nest with a 5" screen at the kitchen to watch news or RUclips videos during the meal, and I don't need a 32" screen for that :) But Google Nest has only Wi-Fi, technically it's not a TV anymore.
In 2010, I went out for a 55" TV. The one I wanted wasn't in stock and I was talked into getting a 52" LED Sony Bravia. I still use this TV but regretted not getting the 55".
A few years ago, I looked into a 65 or 70" TV but the only reasons why I haven't gotten a new one is because it won't fit in my vehicle, and I don't want everyone going down the road to see the store deliver one to me.
I would like a small TV to accompany my computer area.
Sit down at my desk and just power on a TV or device its hooked to, with sound. Built in digital TV tuner and radio would actually be nice.
Or when using a gaming device runa capture card passthrough to the TV but capture on the computer to stream to friends (and mix the audio into the computer headphones)
love verge ❤ from India always with best quality tech videos🎉
You might even say Big TV wants you to own Bigger TVs
Tiny homes are on the rise, sk there's hope for small ones
If your definition of a TV is a screen with a tuner, then buy the tuner separately. Otherwise just use what we have, phones, tablets and laptops that do all that and more. Do people even watch broadcast TV anymore? I know I don't. I can't even get a decent signal.
I prefer monitors. Make them as big as possible!
Anti-glare, color accurate, no motion blurring, high Hz, ultra low response rate.
Thanks
THe fact is, screen size is not the main cost for the final product. Small screen or big screen cost the same, so there is no reason to make smaller TV.
Plus the need is fulfill by phone and tablet, or computer monitor.
To go lower than 40 you'd have to go to the monitor space, at this point. If you want something decent quality.
A 40" TV is the perfect size for my living room but only 43" now available. BUT 32" is the IDEAL kitchen size TV but there are hardly any 32" decent display quality TVs released, just cheap brand ones. More 32" TVs need to be released.
Super Satisfying with Giant Smart Tv!!! ❤😍❤
You know, I like TVs at arround 40"-55" I think that is good enough for everything :)
But if you have a smaller room where you just want a TV you can just get a 32" one :),
The Sharp prototype QDEL panel was small 😅
Personally I think people who want 32 or smaller are just trying to get a nostalgic hit, unless it's for travel or something super specific, with so many monitors to choose from for smaller screens it just isn't a realistic market segment that will make companies money or have significant interest from the general consumer audience. It's the epitome of niche use case at this point.
I have a 19” in my kitchen and I love it
Nah, next tv im getting will be something small w/o reflection, i got a 55 that its pretty nice but hurt my sight on the long term, and its troublesome to move for cleaning etc
I mostly watch streaming video so I don't need a TV with a tuner and speakers. I watch on any monitor that I can send the output from my tablet, computer or phone to wirelessly, or connect a Roku or Apple TV to, and listen on wireless headphones. My iPad held near my face also gives me a large screen to watch. I do have a Bluray player still for Blurays and DVDs. I can get them free from the library.
I mean for the kitchen I have the google hub max. I can stream to it and do way more
They're called laptops now. I haven't used a TV in like 10 years.
Loving seeing more from becca!
Why don't we have small TVs anymore?
Phones.
I only consume media from my computer in my room and you can get 27'' and 32'' montors. When i was a kid i had small TV in the room and the one computer was in the living room with minimal options to stream These are the small TVs of today. And you can get 50 inch 4k TVs for $300 now. Cost has gone doen dramatically
Tablet and a stand... no idea why I'd want another TV for such use cases as it's not portable to the same degree either way. I move my tablet/stand pair around in the kitchen while cooking - first at the sink, then mise en place, then finally at the stove.
Anyway maybe it's different in the states but at least in Europe most cable providers have well, a cable. Their portability is massively diminished due to this. Some of the solutions in the video are pretty damn cool... but far from the portable dream I already have with my tablet (which almost certainly unlike these solutions actually has an app from my cable provider).
I`ll have a do it all VR headset instead please
Are Supersonic an actual part of Sony? The guys laniard certainly suggested that, but there's no mention of that on the Wikipage of about us page.
Supersonic and Sony are separate companies, although Sony did make the best small TV ever, the XEL-1 and then bailed out.
Honestly this was just replaced by a moniter and a Chromecast. Feel like this is exactly what toure looking for
I feel like we are going towards the TV walls of Fahrenheit 451
They are selling cinema, not TV.
I’ve been wondering the same thing for years. 😔
What about projectors?
mini projectors are great but the usecases for a little tv usually dont leave room for a projection surface.
Or atleast, it becomes less convenient.
Though thats still a good point, projectors are rad.
Thank you, SuperSonic! o7
i saw a guy watching youtube on his smart watch…
Tablets killed it
Get a small HDMI monitor and fire stick or android box plus speakers, bluetooth or otherwise.
So you went to an expo hosted to showcase the most cutting edge technology looking for outdated tech..
I don't understand why you would want to own a small T.V if it wasn't also a portable T.V.
The only place in my house for a TV means it’s limited to a maximum of 35”
I can’t find a 4K 120hz HDR TV with 4 HDMI 2.1 ports for less that 40 inches - infuriating
All TVs are computers now. Portable computers are small TVs.
I did not expect Angela :'D 👍🏼
My mother TV from Samsung has a 40" screen and it is 4k 😁
