  • A playthrough of Sega's 1993 beat 'em up game for the Sega CD, Final Fight CD.
    Played through on the hard difficulty level as Haggar. I also show each of the Time Attack stages after the ending.
    This Sega-produced port of Capcom's 1989 arcade hit was the closest thing US gamers got to a home version of an arcade perfect port until emulation was able to capably do the job.
    The western computer versions are worth only mentioning for how terrible they are, and the Super Nintendo port, while fun in its own right, was sorely lacking in several respects. Early on, only the x68000 port was virtually arcade-perfect, but that was a Japan-only release (not to mention the price of the computer would've been about the same as a CPS1 cabinet in the early 90s).
    Sega had a good track record with porting Capcom's arcade hits to the Genesis platform: Strider, MERCS, Forgotten Worlds, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and Mega Twins were all excellent, and it seems that this trend continued nicely on the CD platform.
    With the exception of a few censored sprites, pretty much everything that was missing in the 1990 Super Nintendo conversion is present in the Sega CD release.
    All of the arcade game's playable characters and stages are intact, and the simultaneous 2P mode is included. The CD version can throw far more characters around on screen with no slowdown (though in a few extreme cases it can flicker pretty badly), making the challenge much closer to that of the original.
    The graphics look great - it appears as if this version retains most (all?) of the animation of the original, and though it has lost a lot of color, the overall look of the arcade game is faithfully reproduced. The intro and ending cinematics have been redone with (groan) full voice acting, and it also has a brand new, remixed version of the soundtrack that streams directly off the CD. Most people really seem to love the new tracks, but I've never been a big fan. I love the arcade soundtrack, but this one always sounded fairly cheesy to me. Too bad they didn't include an option to play the music using the system's FM chip. The sound and voice effects are all loud and clear, though, and that new Time Attack theme is pretty good.
    I did find it funny, but kinda cool, when the vocals kicked in stage 3. Does anyone know if that's Mitsuyoshi singing during the cage fight with the Andores? It sounds awfully similar to some of his Daytona vocals.
    Final Fight CD isn't quite an arcade-perfect port, but it is excellent. The CPS1 hardware could have run circles around the Sega CD, but you'd never be able to tell looking at these two games. This version stands up to the Streets of Rage games far better than the SNES ports ever could.

We were still playing our Genesis at the time. He never was allowed company so we’d always stand outside his window and watch him play inside. I remember him yelling outside and saying “ hey I got a new game and there’s a guy who almost curses”, referring to the Haggar when he says “you son of a...”. Lol. One of many reasons why the Sega CD is a vastly underrated console. Look beyond the FMV games that clogged the library, and you could find some real gems. It's kind of too bad that this is remembered mostly as the beginning of Sega's downfall.

    • @supersexysega
      @supersexysega 4 года назад

      It's only underrated if you are holding it to a Nintendo Nerd standard. It has some great games ofcourse Sega was an incredible game maker.
      If your a Genesis owner back in the day. $299 for an add-on or buy a SNES for half that cost and open yourself up to a library that for every good Sega CD game there are about 10 good SNES games. That's the perspective that should be used.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  4 года назад +5

      It absolutely had some great stuff. I mean, what other system can boast that it got the sole official English release of Snatcher? And then it had the Working Designs games, Shining Force, Rise of the Dragon, Lords of Thunder, Silpheed.... so many great games. It had a lot of crap too, but the crap-to-gold ratio wasn't really any worse than any other console.
      I still tend to think of the Sega CD as a solid move for Sega. In my mind, they really started doing damage to the brand once they announced the 32X. Not that that was a bad system either for games, but it was the last thing Sega should've been doing pouring money into at that point.

    • @majimamike5313
      @majimamike5313 4 года назад +4

      I believe the 32X was the beginning of the end for SEGA. The Sega CD was released three years before the Saturn and I dont think it affected neither its development nor the funds of the company. Sega CD was an awesome add on for the Genesis. Maybe a pointless move as the Genesis alone was powerful enough to challenge the Snes. But most of its games are real gems.

    • @Dorian_Scott
      @Dorian_Scott 4 года назад +2

      The Sega CD was pretty underrated. It had a pretty good library of games. Yeah, most of it was either interactive FMV games, or enhanced ports of Genesis games. But, there are some good exclusives on the add-on, too. Even some region exclusives like (🇯🇵 *_Shadowrun_* & *_Yumimi Mix_* ) were good. The only bad games that it had were some of the FMV games, like *_Bram Stoker's Dracula_* .
      The 32x is the crap add-on.

    • @freakyfornash
      @freakyfornash Год назад

      It's a shame the Sega CD didn't have more amazing gems like this, as it's solid port of Final Fight alone was practically enough to sell that console back in the day. That of which was why I begged my parents to get me one as my signature gift for Christmas way back in 95 too! (L.O.L.!) Just to think of what else more good could have been done with it, if they focused more on making games such as this, rather than those lame, crappy FMV's nobody (including myself) really seemed to like, which flooded the system, and what not as well. Too bad it's conversions of then hit arcade games in Mortal Kombat, and NBA Jam were both nothing to write home about unfortunately (while being not a whole lot more than slightly enhanced ports of their respective Genesis titles), considering how well done this game was though. I wonder how amazing Street Fighter II (with the Sega Genesis editions both being very good as they were) could have been on the Sega CD with that being said? That along with The Punisher arcade game (which too got a fairly decent Genesis conversion in it's own right), and who knows what else also?

    This version of Final Fight is the definitive way to play this Capcom classic. It's a *LOT* better than the SNES port. Like, a *LOT* better! Also, the GBA port is great, too!
    POSITIVES
    • *Good Graphics*
    • *Good Music* ( It *ACTUALLY* sounds like the Arcade version! )
    • *Voiceovers* (The "so bad, it's good" variety.)
    • *2 Player Co-op*
    • *Good Control*
    • *NO Censorship* (... Besides Roxy & Poison's longer clothing. Sega's censorship policy toward nudity rears its ugly head, here. It's not too bad, though.)
    (Not much in the way of NEGATIVES, here. It's a perfect port!)
    Final Rating: 10/10
    Play *This!*
    Avoid the lousy SNES port like the plague! It falls *SO* short!

      It actually took place in 1989, when the Japanese arcade version was released. Capcom USA fudged the date when it ported the arcade game, not knowing that dates would get much more important when Street Fighter became such an important franchise. Final Fight is part of the Street Fighter franchise. Later versions would place Final Fight in 1989, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo in 1991 when the original Street Fighter II was released in Japan.

    I especially like the colors. Rather than some lazy porting of the graphics to a different palette, they seem to have taken it into full consideration, so the overall look is still quite vibrant. Had Sega concentrated more on these games that were effectively "your console, spiced up" rather than FMV stuff it may have gone differently, who knows.
    Bit sad to see the final scene with Cody and Jessica as some years later they made her disappear while Cody was framed and thrown into prison (has that storyline been resolved since?)
