Fun fact: when Joey activated pot of greed, he had 30 cards in his deck (presuming he played the minimum deck size which is 40 and he drawed 10 cards over the duration of the duel) the chances of Joey drawing the two exact cards he needed to win the duel is (1/30)*(1/29)= 0.00115 or 0.115 % odds which is quite insane odds given Joey is the luckiest duelist alive. Sure there could an argument made that there could potentially draw other cards in his deck that could deal with Tyrant Dragon like Spider Roulette but it may not be the card that could net Joey the duel this turn which would result in a prolonged duel where Joey could lose on his next turn.

"is Tyrant Dragon Rex's new Red Eyes?" In short, yeah. Rex has always had a Dragon as his boss monster, Red Eyes, Serpent Night Dragon or Tyrant Dragon.
Rex's deck shares a philosophy with the Evol archetype(and i think Transcendsaurus? Or the other dino archetype that came out around the same time) that Dragons are the evolved state of Dinosaurs. Thats why it wasn't until Hasselberry that we got an actual Dinosaur boss monster.

THANK YOU! I really dislike how much the show sh8ts on Rex. I mean yeah he's arrogant, but he didn't really ever do anything to DESERVE being treated like a dirty duelist like Weavil did. He was a former champion and his dinosaurs are realy cool. Plus I love his design as well, really fits for someone who uses dinos. At least his two headed King rex got some upgrades recently. Hopefully they appear in Duel Links to buff Rex's deck. Says a lot that Weavil has legit strategies that can be used in modern times but Rex...aside from having TWO other Dino users that outclass him, has nothing (technically 3 if you count Gore's Dino wrestlers). Also a shame Rush Duel has some excellent Dinosaurs, but no Rex or user to capitalize on them. Forget the cards, Rex (and maybe Weavil) should've gotten a retrain in DSOD. I'd have liked to see them redeem themselves when they're older and genuinely earn the respect of the main protags. I mean Espa got a bit of a redemption (the game doesn't treat him as a villain) and Mako was never treated badly at all. So... what's down?

Espa was basically using the same gimmick as Mai (pretend psychic), just in a different way (sibling spies rather than scent marked cards). On top of that, much like Mai, he got caught out maybe halfway through the duel and then just played legit while still being a competent challenge, and was graceful in defeat so that earned him some goodwill back pretty immediately.

Here's something fun. Either the planning for Geafried tied to his lore was even more than you thought or there was a big coincidence. So by the time Gearfried the Iron Knight was released in the TCG there were only three sword based equip spells. Salamandra doesnt count as it is not the sword (which appears to be Legendary Sword) but the flame serpent around it that is the equip. This was only fore fire monsters and Joey used it on Flame Swordsman. I think this is why it is shown around legendary sword since it can only be equipped to a warrior, so this would represent botht he type and attribute of Flame Swordsman. These three equips were Sword of Dark Destruction (which can only be equipped to a Dark monster and thus doesn't count anyway), Sword of the Deep-Seated and Legendary Sword (which can only be equiped to a warrior type.) By the Time Gearfried the Swordmaster came out they had 5 more but two were Gaurdian weapons; Wicked-Breaking Flamberge Baou and Twin Swords of Flashing Light Tryce. Since they are specifically themed around the Guardian's they represent and are supposed to be those gaurdians transformed ino weapons its arguable if these count nessisary. The other three were Lightning Blade (which appears to be Legendary Sword upgraded, it even has the same effect that it can only be equiped to a warrior type), Sword of the Souleater (which again doesnt count since it is specifically for level 3 and lower normal monsters) and Sword of the Dragons Soul. Gearfried the Swordmaste has 2600 ATK which seems oddly low. Then you realize that's because he is unequiped. This is simply his ATK with the restriant off but he still needs a sword to be as powerful as they say he becomes. In addition to automatically destroying an opponents monsters by effect whenever it is equipped, the sword equips that can be equipped to him raise his ATK of course. Of the sword based cards that can be equipped to him, Legendary is the first. This would be THE warrior equip early on and thus the most likely intended despite others being out. It raises his ATK to 2900 or just 100 less than the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Considering the card lore, this does make him very formidable, especially for a warrior type. Next was the Sword of Deep Seated which pushes him 100 ATK over the Blue-Eyes by equipping it alone. Lightning Blade actually boosts him by a full 800 which puts him 400 over Blue-Eyes. Twin Swords actually reduce the ATK to grant a double attack but Wicked-Breaking when equiped on its own equals Sword of the Deep-Seated, with the Swormaster becoming 3100. Finally, Sword of Dragon's Soul increases him to 3300 but also destroyed any dragon battled by it automatically. Making Gearfried the Swordmaster 2600 ATK was actually perfect for the current sword themed quips at the time to both represent the lore and Joey's rivaly to Kaiba. The base sword pushes him up to just under Blue-Eyes with everything after poking just abouve it. Obviously, it doesn't restrict the equips to only sword themed, but this is what you realize if you follow the lore on what he used

Also, even if that was the case the Anime doesn't count the various Legendary Dragon Fusions as actual extra deck cards, it treats them as the card itself transforming into the new card like how Thousand Dragon is treated in the Anime for example. In other words, if Polymerization isn't used the Anime technically doesn't count it as an Extra Deck/Fusion monster.

I have a real idea, one that also got interrupted at the very last second.
Leo Akaba "The Professor" vs. Yuya Sakaki (Merged with Yuto) and Declan Akaba
At the last second where Yuya was about to win, Yuya's father Yusho uses an unrecognized card called "Restraining Sword of Impact" to trap him, causing the duel to be ruled as a "no contest". Could the Professor have won?

Rex was a specialist in dinosaur type monsters but he did have two dragon monster cards, red eyes black dragon and serpent night dragon, and ended up losing both from duelist kingdom and the battle city tournament. So Rex having Tyrant Dragon was a nod to his character from the previous appearances in the series and how Tyrant Dragon was his strongest monster card in his new deck.

Something underrated about Rex, even with the advantages of the Seal Of Oricalchos, he still holds the distinction of being an opponent of Joey's that didn't cheat.

The thing Joey could activate Scapegoat in the first turn is not working.
If scapegoat is activated, the player can't summon a monster that turn, unless a normal set.
Never said in the anime, but I'm convinced that Joey activated Scapegoat allways in opponets turns for that reason.

Yeah, it’s the same with how other characters rely on, what they believe is a bigger and better monster, to do the job that more monsters could do but they want to wreck their opposition with their ace in the hole.

Even without hindsight, Rex made a major mistake. He traded in 3800 damage for 2500 damage for no reason, since running over Panther Warrior was no issue. Sure, the end-result would've been 0 damage, but that's the same hindsight, and because Horned Saurus only works on the turn it's summoned he always could've just done it later (something he could've near-guaranteed if he used the Orichalcos properly making Giant Rex a defender of at least Kaitoptera).

Actually one possible shenanigan is that the seal of orichalcos does also limit the user in locking the use of Xtra deck monsters

Gotta say this one was a surprise! This next one in the series came up fast and it was worth the wait. Always have loved this series and no matter what duel you analyze it’s always 10000 out of 10. Here are a few future suggestions:
Atem and Kaiba vs Lumis and Umbra
    Kaiba vs Alister
Jaden Yuki vs Aster Phoenix (round 2)
    Aster Phoenix vs Adrian Gecko
    Jaden vs Darkness (season 4)
Yuma and Nash vs Don Thousand

For that last draw I'll defend at least Joey being able to draw into Claw of Hermos at the best moment- as a Legendary Dragon it is a mystical card. So it's not too absurd that when Joey is in a pinch/by his own will it would manifest at the top of his deck.
The Gearfried combo? Now that is just ridiculous.

As always very nice duel analysis video! It's always nice to see the characters showing their strength(or in this case, their luck kek)
Ngl I have been watching these series for a little while and I have been wondering if you can cover any Pegasus related duel, for example Yugi vs Pegasus in Duel Monsters and if he had any chance there or Pegasus vs Crowler and Bonaparte in GX and if they had any chance to win if they worked together.
    Always a suggestion ofc xD

Gilasaurus' effect in real life is the same as in the anime, it allows your opponent to summon from the GY not the hand.

you actually cannot normal summon the same turn that you activate scapegoat, and if you summoned, you can't activate scapegoat on top of that.

To be fair with pot of greed(or any draw two effect) in the anime it is almost exclusively used to give the protagonist the two perfect cards they need, like Jaden getting Winged Kuribo AND Transcendent Wings off Bubbleman in his duel against Zane or Kaiba drawing into the perfect spell cards in his Duel against Zigfried.

Nice to see the other half of the "On the Wrong Track" episodes duels. Would like to plug for another Orichalcos duel, with possibly its "initial precursor": Seto Kaiba vs. Pegasus/Alister. I would love to see how you break down the similarities and differences between the two as Alister is called out by Kaiba before he reveals himself as (in the dub at least) "What's wrong with you? You've made almost the exact same duel move for move, and the one thing you're not is predictable!"

  • @towof3531

I'd say that Joey drawing Hermos through Pot of Greed is kinda like the millenium puzzle luck boost, though only when facing the seal of orichalcos. Even if it had not been hermos + the card to summon Swordmaster, he'd have drawn hermos no matter what, most likely he would have turned gearfried into an equipment (it didn't happen in the anime, but it could have, most likely an armor granting a boost and a negate, i would say), equipped it to red eyes, and win the same turn. It's just the scenario that didn't want Joey to have too many fusion equip spell, imo.

Joey's dragon can fuse with any monster? This is Duelist Kingdom all over again!
