I think he will have to give them the receipt back with his signature. After he ripped up the receipt ross will have to issue another receipt as the payer for the dinner.
I disagree with tipping. Like everyone else, they get paid for the service they provide. And if it's low then the employer needs to raise their salary. Don't expect part of your salary to come from customers! The worse part is, it has turned into compulsory fee (like extra tax). Give me a break! Not fair.
Few things irritate me, but this tradition of tipping everything in the United States is very irritating and as a tourist you are practically pressured to do so.
Good to know it's not just me who finds it weird. I thought the idea behind the tip was to reward exemplary service. If it's mandatory then just add it to the God damn bill, or the waiters wage. If it isn't mandatory stop making a fuss when people don't tip. This middle ground we're in is so stupid.
@@hazeddon actually, the purpose of a tip is to ensure prompt service. That's always been the case. Why do people have such an issue with tipping? Are you really that stingy?
The U.S.A which is supposed to be the power capital of the world alongside China and Russia is very backwards in a lot of ways. Tipping being one of them. In Australia, service staff get paid a proper wage and you only tip if the service was above and beyond.
Funny, this scene proves what I keep telling people but they don't believe me: that the expected tip % used to be lower and it keeps going up. Once upon a time 10% was a perfectly acceptable tip. Then it changed to 15%, and now people are trying to claim the minimum you should tip is 20%. Yet here even with Ross' twenty bucks the total tip would only be 14%, and that's seen as a good tip.
When someone pays for dinner, whether he or she tips more or less, the golden rule is, just let it be. Rich or not, it's their money. Just be thankful that they pay for dinner. If you're unsatisfied, the next occasion, offer to pay plus you can tip all you want.
Ron Liebman, such a great actor. Watch "Norma Rae" if you have not seen it. And Elliot Gould (Jack Geller) another awesome actor prominent in the 70's, and that I would consider a "movie star" in those days.
in southeast asian countries tips are *so rare* . in america, it'll be offensive if you don't tip the right way, y'all already paid for hours but still depend on people tipping you.
Just like how we forget the years of our parents suffering for us and stupidly remember the few seconds where they needed a small little break or they would be blown up out of the pressure
Ooh, joke's on Dr. Green, they can still close out the credit card receipt without the signed copy, they just can't add the 4% tip and Ross can leave a cash tip!
"Do you really serve people sneezers?" "Well, um, I don't." But didn't she later tell Joey to do the same thing when Joey started to work in the coffee house?
I tip 10% for all restaurants/cafes, but only excellent service deserves the 20-25% tips (starting with smile & greeting me, then being polite and attentive) Thats excellence for me 🤣
The tipping system in USA truly amazes me, not only it's virtually mandatory which is crazy for the rest of the world the tipping amount you are expected to tip is insanely high. 4% sounds absolutely reasonable. I wish I made as much money as a US waiter.
@@prg4647 Weird system you guys are living in (from Europe here). The government doesnt pay the workers enough, so the people who buy the food have to pay them. Money you already payed tax for. This doesn't add up.
@@teipkep if the restaurants were to charge regular wages to employees, the cost of food would double. Thats why the tip system was implemented a long time ago here in the states. That, plus it gives the employees the incentive of offering above and beyond customer service to earn that tip. I've been to several countries in Europe when you don't have to tip. For the most part food in restaurants there is really expensive and the service is subpar. In France I would almost had to beg the waiters to go to the table and when they did, it was with the rudest attitude behaving as if they were doing you a favor
They are actually guaranteed minimum wage. If the tip doesn't make up to the minimum wage, the restaurant has to make up the difference. No if no one tipped, the servers will just end up being paid minimum wage. Look it up, the minimum wage will be the highest amount between the state minimum and federal minimum. This is the hidden story either people don't know or they're enjoying the tip. The truth is, servers can easily make way above minimum wage with all the tips they receive. If they can't handle the fluctuation of tips, they should work at a fast food store, or grocery store, or salesperson at a department store. All those jobs have guaranteed wages and a way to be promoted up.
@@celestema2506 that makes more sense but still I’d rather just pay for a more expensive meal instead of wondering whether to tip or how much the protocol is I still think tipping culture in the US is so weird Tipping is like one of those hidden costs that I don’t think about when going to restaurants and completely throws the budget off balance. Where I live the most ‘tips’ I’ve paid is a few pounds more which is fine because it’s not expected or they add service automatically to the bill making like all restaurants should
I totally agree. A lot servers are so entitled that when they see the bill where you didn't tip generously, they give you a dirty look. Even going to a coffee shop or ice cream shop, they have tipping options. They whine about $2/hour wage, and enjoy hundreds of dollars of tips on good days. Me, I prefer to price tag to be how much I need to pay for
Rachel's father did the right thing.Ross was behaving as if it was customer's duty to give tips.It doesnot matter if waiters are being paid less coz its their choice, who are customers to compensate them for their lower wages.
it IS the customer duty, you no that going in, in FACT now a lot of restaurant have that ON the bill not paying a tip is like not paying and can and will get you arrested.
People saying tipping is nonsense obviously had never worked a 12 hours shift on the service field. Even if you're payed hourly a tip is a nice way for your customer to say thanks for your service and hard work. Dr. Greene is cheap and a jerk, you can say a lot of a person by the way they treat the waiter/waitress.
Or had never live in usa. Its systems with waiter stuff doesn't go well. I was a waitress and in my country it's not necesary or espected the tipp besides when it happens is nice

He portrays an uptight snob with a fragile ego and it's really damn convincing. He can barely afford to smile at Ross jokes.
Thats what im saying! His mannerisms and way of speaking (like when he talked over Ross and said ‘huh?!’) reminds me of my dad a bit.
Rachel's dad has no respect for wait staff. Look at how he treated the waiter when Rachel was there to tell him she was pregnant.
Rachel: Is everything ok with the waiter.
Dr Green: How would I know? I was in the bathroom!
I agree he doesn't have no respect for the wait staff at all.
I love when Ross and Rachel laugh at the joke together
You could feel the gut wrenching tenseness
Ross and Rachel were so sweet at the beginning of their relationship😍 dr. Green is acting like a child
This part always! Bugs me when I watch this episode. Cuz in my opinion it's an easy solve.
I would simply say to the table "that was delicious, thank you Mr. Green. Since you paid I'll take care of the tip." Or when he says who put a 20 down? Say "oh that was me since u paid for dinner I thought I'd get the tip"
We do this all the time in my family when someone else pays others will get the tip.
I think you didn't get the point of Dr green; he paid 200 dollars and Ross wanted to make him look like cheap
@juanfernandocastilla2845 I get that, that's what dr green thought ross was doing. But I really don't think that was ross' intention, since ross wanted/ was trying to get dr green to like him.
& that's what my comment was about...that was my fix to the problem & why the scene kinda bothers me cuz its an easy fix. But it's a show & it happens cuz its more entertaining that way
The Dr. Green actor does a great job of playing such despicable character
But in this scene he is right

Ya know...the fact that he had a receipt would mean that his credit card was already ran and the charge would be on there anyway. Ripping up a receipt does nothing.
I think he will have to give them the receipt back with his signature. After he ripped up the receipt ross will have to issue another receipt as the payer for the dinner.
not true it does ont go throw untill he sign it so they have to cancle and have ross pay.
I love Rachel outfit including the white coat. She looks beautiful 💖
Tipping is a voluntary concept. If waiters have a small salary, it is their problem, which should not be solved by customers.
I'm with Dr.Green on this one.
Im not
I am with you.
Yess
Yeah, if Ross was so upset he should have paid half +tip. Can't just pay 20 and oh look at me I tip, in my opinion.
becouse they all ready put in in his credit card, ross ended up paying for the whole thing. and did not complain.
“And causes the, the ... night blindness” 1:29
I disagree with tipping. Like everyone else, they get paid for the service they provide. And if it's low then the employer needs to raise their salary. Don't expect part of your salary to come from customers! The worse part is, it has turned into compulsory fee (like extra tax). Give me a break! Not fair.
Thanks Doctor Greene... Without you I might never have known about Chateau Latour and Chateau Lafite

USA should ban tips.... It's the responsibility of the employer to pay their employees not the customers
Some restaurants take the tips of their serving staff
Waiters don't get a salary in US ?
@@stutipathak4602 their hourly rate is like $2 an hour.

@@kyleroberts8823 "to ensure prompt service"?? But you tip at the end, not at the start.
And no, that is definitely NOT the case.
The U.S.A which is supposed to be the power capital of the world alongside China and Russia is very backwards in a lot of ways. Tipping being one of them. In Australia, service staff get paid a proper wage and you only tip if the service was above and beyond.
@@MicukoFelton yea, after you get the service.
Well, Ross didn’t have so much time.
Yes, the percentage has gone up.
And now we have every fast food restaurant or type of store imaginable expecting tips for any type of service .
feel like Dr Green was the best actor on friends. So intimidating.
A classic dialogue from Rachel's papa. Very true.
That's some serious acting
When someone pays for dinner, whether he or she tips more or less, the golden rule is, just let it be. Rich or not, it's their money. Just be thankful that they pay for dinner. If you're unsatisfied, the next occasion, offer to pay plus you can tip all you want.
True.
Nah, I would have done what Ross did. It's the right thing to do.
@@pb4ugo19 Yeah I mean it's Ross' own money, let him do what he wants with it.

Gosh I'm so glad I don't have to deal with people like this
Dr green must be called Dr Grinch 😅
My grandmother didn’t tip when she invited to lunch... I always left the tip.
Ron Liebman, such a great actor. Watch "Norma Rae" if you have not seen it.
And Elliot Gould (Jack Geller) another awesome actor prominent in the 70's, and that I would consider a "movie star" in those days.
Usually when I go out to a restaurant , one person pays the bill and the other gets the tip .
Exactly. Anyone who would get upset by this arrangement is an idiot.
Her dad is so intimidating here! When he realises Ross left a tip
in southeast asian countries tips are *so rare* . in america, it'll be offensive if you don't tip the right way, y'all already paid for hours but still depend on people tipping you.
It's a broken system.
Employers are cheap and most waiters get paid like $2 an hour so they pretty much live off tips.
Just like how we forget the years of our parents suffering for us and stupidly remember the few seconds where they needed a small little break or they would be blown up out of the pressure
I think 10% tip is not justifiable.
I love Rachel's outfit ❤Her shape is everything 🥰
Ooh, joke's on Dr. Green, they can still close out the credit card receipt without the signed copy, they just can't add the 4% tip and Ross can leave a cash tip!

The tipping system in USA truly amazes me, not only it's virtually mandatory which is crazy for the rest of the world the tipping amount you are expected to tip is insanely high. 4% sounds absolutely reasonable. I wish I made as much money as a US waiter.
$200 for a dinner? That's like 14000 INR...Dayummnnn Dr green😱
More than 25000 Rs actually, accounting the inflation... Whereas we wouldn't pay 2 dollars in a restaurant.

Thanks for the tip. 💚
I agree tho, paying 200 dollar for a dinner, and it's not good enough?
Nobody said it wasn't good enough. But when you go to a restaurant you know that you have to add the tip, ad thats 20 percent extra to the total
@@prg4647 Interesting how different cultures have it for sure.
Here in India, most restaraunts add a 10% service charge to the bill. That money goes to the waiters. So there is no tip system.
Intense conversation 😂
I will never understand how the employees are barely paid and rely on tipping 🤦🏻♀️
@@celestema2506 that makes more sense but still I’d rather just pay for a more expensive meal instead of wondering whether to tip or how much the protocol is
I still think tipping culture in the US is so weird
Tipping is like one of those hidden costs that I don’t think about when going to restaurants and completely throws the budget off balance.
Me, I prefer to price tag to be how much I need to pay for
I never understood the tip culture and I could never. I will fight to increase the salary of the waiter but tipping is something I don't understand.
Rachel's father did the right thing.Ross was behaving as if it was customer's duty to give tips.It doesnot matter if waiters are being paid less coz its their choice, who are customers to compensate them for their lower wages.
it IS the customer duty, you no that going in, in FACT now a lot of restaurant have that ON the bill not paying a tip is like not paying and can and will get you arrested.
total sigma move by tearing the checque putting rose in his place and walking out
You're beyond braindead.
& going by some of the comments here, there are plenty of people who lack compassion & respect for those who work in the food service industry.
Or had never live in usa. Its systems with waiter stuff doesn't go well. I was a waitress and in my country it's not necesary or espected the tipp besides when it happens is nice
Tip should be a reward for good food and service, something extra. People who work in service industry shouldn't have to rely on customers' goodwill to survive.
Let's be honest, tipping system is simply an excuse for employer to pay their employees less.
Quit the job, change job. It's your fault, your choice, stop blaming others on your personal choices. It's unethical the least.
