Great content, Jay! I'm Dominican and my husband is African American. Almost two years ago, we visited the Dominican Republic. Despite hearing negative stories from people, all I could think of was my father's love for his home country. He always talked about the lifestyle and beaches in the DR. He was unhappy living in the USA but was in USa due to work and school opportunities, and when he fell ill and knew he wouldn't recover, he told me that we would go back to the DR together. I never understood why he promised me that if he was not going to make it, but what I know is he wanted me to go back to our home, and even though he couldn’t be there to take me with him I would still be there with him. His wish was not to be buried in the USA, so he was laid to rest in the DR. Although I couldn't visit his gravesite initially due to passport issues when he passed away, I finally fulfilled my dream to go DR because of my father. The DR brought me to life, and now I am determined to leave the USA. Your videos, along with Nori's, have been instrumental in motivating me. I stayed in a penthouse in Santo Domingo for almost three months, an experience I could never afford in the USA or NYC. I have been hesitant to leave my career in the USA, but your inspiring videos have helped alleviate my fears. Thank you both for your amazing content!
Yo bro, I respected the way you break down everything it'll make sense for real people who want to move for a better living standard from the western world of stress and depression. I'm Jamaican but live in the UK. Keep up the good work.
I lived in the DR for 2 years. No rent cuz i own. my monthly expenses was just about $1500. thats all my bills, clubbing 2-3 times a month, car payment ($300) and had a lady who took care of the house and cook. $2500 is definitely more than enough to live real good and comfortable.
Bro im a passport bro and ive lived on $800 a month in D.R and that also going out! When rent is $200 a month A LOT CAN BE DONE. However you're NOT going out every single day or weekend on a $800 budget.

At the end it all depends where you live and your lifestyle. My husband and I together, we make around $2000 a month, and in rent, utilities and groceries we spend around $900. So, yeah, if you live in the cities is more expensive.

Great video bro. Very informative, I hope u can do a breakdown of how possible it is for an expat living there to make $2500 a month. Some folks who are looking to relocate to other countries with “low cost of living” need to really do their homework on source of income to fund the lifestyle they wanna live in their new adopted country.
I just finished projecting my monthly retirement income. While I felt the income would be more than enough, this vid provides a clearer idea as to where things could stand. Very informative.

I like your rate conversion comment! I posted a price in euros on Facebook and received a nasty comment saying, "Why doesn't she show this price in U.S. dollars?" I thought, "If this person can't even convert euros into dollars, she must keep her derriere at home." If she wants to live in another country, then she should get a live-in tour guide! This is a realist take for the DN area that keeps a "Western" quality of life that most Americans would expect. It's not including transportation, if you plan on taking an Uber anywhere in the city add around $150 per month give or take.
Depends how you want to live. My wife of 25 years is a Dominican (who I met in the US) has a brother and family members who live in Santo Domingo. They live decently on a lot less. That said, most people who leave the US to live overseas just don’t have enough money to live decently in this country. $2500 is below the poverty line in the US.
I think people are smart enough to understand that it depends on how you want to live, not to mention I said the exact same thing in the video. What's decent to your family member may not be decent to someone else. It's subjective. There is no one size fits all. This is just a starting point.
@@DWilliam1 that’s not true, a lot of people who can afford to live comfortably in the US and some regular foreigners who invested their money over the years who are millionaires, but want the experience of living abroad and let’s face it increase their chances of finding a younger pretty romantic partner that will be interested in them.
I’m a Army veteran with 100% VA rating. So I’m sitting at 4k a month free for the rest of my life. I know the VA has an office in the DR and I’m strongly strongly thinking of living there maybe 3-4 months out of the year
Brother I am sitting in the same position. Do you know about the Pensionado visa? I am applying for mine. Me and my wife are going to buy a house in Bani. We also got a chinola farm in Peralta. It's a extra income for us also.
Jay, please also make a video about the cost of buying and maintenance of a vehicle, insurance, registration and gas a month. And 2-3 bedroom apts for a family of 4.
Depends what you plan on doing. Traffic is already high inside the DN area alone most people would save money just by renting in the DN area to begin with. SDN is also not as well kept as the DN area in terms of infrastructure and utilities. Unfortunately, politicians pay a disproportionate amount of attention to the DN compared to the rest of the country except a few other places (Santiago, etc.)
@@ShaferHart if someone works remote SDN is the best option, you are closer to DN from SDN than SDE, SDN has all the benefits that SDE with better routes you can go to anywhere with the Circunvalación Freeway I mean to the interior of the country
What do you think that the average cost of transportation is? Cars are nearly double the price of the US, and insurance/gas will add to that. If you choose not to have a car, you’ll probably be paying for a bunch of Ubers. Ubers are much cheaper than the US, but they can add up.
I mentioned in the video I don't know. I also mentioned in the video insurance and gas will add to it. Listen I can't give a cost for every single scenario. This is baseline if one can't take this and figure out for themselves what it will cost they're not serious about doing anything.
I love your content and I need your help, I’m contemplating on moving to the DR, now I have a family of five including me plus a Nanny, I’m really looking for a house because I have such a big family. I have small children so you know I would want to be an area for young families. I have a two year old, a four year old and an eleven year old daughter so you see my dilemma. I really need to talk to you and see how you can help me. Thank you.
Im from DC. Coming in September with my Dominican wife. Could you point me in the direction of real estate investment to consider? I'll be in San Cristobal. I've been there before and I know scams run high. Thanks brother.
I still do business in the States. Also, with all my accounts, ie credit cards, bank accounts, etc. When you need that one time pass code that is sent by text you have to have an American number.
Aye Fam imma be in your Area in September is it cool if I link you. We can have a couple drinks but mostly I want to ask you about your experience out there in DR
That's fine as long as the tab is on you. You can hit me on IG at @iamjayabroad to keep me posted on your travels. Or you can email me at iamjayabroad@gmail.com
It was a good video and gave people a ballpark to work with. One area you could clarify though is you started off saying the budget was for a single person but then you gave a lot of costs stating we pay this much. Electric for example was one of them. You pay less electric if you're single and also depending on how big your place is but you stated we pay this much.....
There is nothing to clarify. If a person is not smart enough to adjust based on it being one person then they aren't serious about moving anywhere. Even so, it doesn't matter how many people are in a house or apartment. The point is how often you run your A/C, which i mentioned. I know people who live in a 1 bedroom and pay more than us. So it's irrelevant to mention all these different variables. Because you don't always pay less if it's one person. Bro, take the message as a ballpark and adjust according. No clarification needed.
@@JayAbroad Alright I appreciate it even though the response was a bit condescending. I just think if you are going to present something as for a single person it should be just that.
@ariefraiser140 you have every right to feel the way you want. I reference several time in the video there will be different variables to consider and still you asked the question. You just don't like the answer and I'm OK with that too. Have a great day!
Hello Jay. I'm interested in getting together with you about the apartment rentals you represent in Santo Domingo. I'm interested in. 1 or 2 bedroom in Residencial Santo Domingo. Sure hope you get this note. Thanks so much.

$2500 a month, if I had no kid and single, I would move to Namibia or Botswana in a heartbeat... I would even fly the plane myself to be sure I arrive early

5:am Good Morning from Thailand getting ready for my Exercise before the mid - morning suns heat its NOT a wonder why Its so expensive to live reasonably comfortably retired in the Domincan Republic # (1) Reason It's an Island nation Just about everything outside of certain native grown Foods is Very expensive because Most things are Imported and Taxed to the max and resold priced near triple what you pay in certain Non Island Nations , $2500 Here in Thailand You are are living Upper Middle class U.S. equivalen $1950 USD you'll live better than Ok and No Power outages too and I'm Originally from NYC I've been coming Here to Thailand to Party since over 25Ys ago.
Brother this not completely true. Dominican Republic is self sufficient when it comes to food. They raised their own meat chicken, beef, pork, and turkey. And most if not all the fruits and vegetables that are eaten here is grown here. Rice and beans all grown here. Milk and natural juices all here You have the option to buy imported food but I can buy local and still be good. BTW been living here 3 years and never once had a power outage. You don't seem to know much about DR brother. Enjoy Thailand.
You make it work where ever you prefer to live. For me, I would never live anywhere in Asia, way too far away from family and friends, their culture, language, prostitution, just don’t like it, it’s a tough environment, just not for me. I would take DR, Colombia and 2500 I can live like a king in both.
I agree. I wouldn't think of moving or living in Asia. Doesn't attract me at all. I'd take my chances in South America before I move way across the world. Besides I don't enjoy the food like that either. Would definitely visit but would not live.
@@CarlitoswayDR Good morning sir from retirement here Thailand the, native grown foods will NOT be expensive any developing Country But with All Island nations it’s all the other Necessities that if they’re not Manufactured on any Island nation Those (necessary life items) are going to either be very difficult to get if at all Or Super expensive As I being an older man 63 yrs old now that began my Manosphere 😜global Experiences 1996 I’m going provide some helpful information for choosing retirement Expatriation living and standards that perhaps one day you’ll call to mind when in real need . I (apologize for the lengthy response 🙏🏾 (1) You can not use your being close to family and friends as a guideline when deciding (what is or what will be your ideal international retirement living ,Your financial situation “ when “you’re older in retirements advanced yrs will dictate that choice and not “Our feelings “ if you’re blessed to live long otherwise there’s no reason to internationally Expatriate . (2) Any country you choose , you can and should as I have take the opportunity to go there as a tourist to stay for a couple of times on. 60day to 90day tourist visas and Try hard to learn the language and culture it’ll open up more possibilities an truer experiences (3) Do not take American Stereotypical Thinking Anywhere outside of that country U.S. when visiting other nations (in your statement where you wrote as if the Whole of Asia is prostitution (unless that was a mistake ) if not You need to re-adjust your view because it’s either from No experience just typing from young black RUclips travel Vloggers experiences without your own travel experience (To see the Rest of the Country In all of the Asian nations ) as I have done and done to in other nations in Europe & North Africa only 2 South America countries Brazil & Mexico . I suggest Not JUST visiting places like (Sosua, or Zona Colonial in Dominican Republic) or Parque Illres in Medellin or Clock Tower Cartagena or (Pattaya , Patong , Nana In Thailand ) nor just The Strip in Las Vegas U.S . those small areas and few people Do NOT define an entire Country and culture. A RUclips Vlogger is not an Expat the 2 are very different VISAS one is a temporary tourist visa. and the other is of more permanent resident granted immigration office Visa This below is the criterion you should use when choosing a Country to Retire expatriated in (A). Safety Safety especially for when your older ) (B) Make sure that country has more than a few Level 1 Level 2 hospital trauma hospitals Available with Advanced affordable healthcare Options having Oncologist , Internal medicine, Cardiology , Trained dentistry, developed ambulance transport, because sooner or later We are all going to need those life saving services and in the U.S those are NOT Very affordable unless “you have wealthy family and friends “(C) a wide variety of Affordable quality housing options for all budgets without having to make too many sacrifices. (D) Make sure A developed electric grid not having no regular power outages in 2024 (E) Look for how that destination country is affected by Natural disasters and try to make sure your not as impacted by it in the area you choose (F) Give careful consideration and try to live in a country with developed affordable transportation infrastructure , roads , trains , buses , Airports Affordable car options (G) an advanced Banking System with many brand branch options and if Necessary if they have an American satellite branch office in the Major city With Favorable Currency Exchange rates as this will also affect your monthly budget from time to time H) Choose a country with a U.S. Consulate or Embassy that is fairly large having a lot of citizens services (I) That country should have a legal system that is fair and don’t have corrupt police that prey on the foreigners or tourists and exercise nationalism and bigotry for financial gain you should avoid any country that has any hint of that Also that country should have easy options of legal foreigner ownership of property house or condo with laws that protect . Lastly Make sure you have expat health insurance which is very different from travellers insurance ***This is why I chose Thailand above all the places I’ve visited and you notice what was NOT mentioned to influence my choice.
@@ITravelSale Very good advise for anyone who wanna retire overseas, prostitution is everywhere, even there in the D R, i guess he don't visit those places!!
Great video but yes you can live on much less, I mean $2500 is about 150k a month I know lawyers that don’t make that much doctors too. I think folks need to look around a bit more Santo Domingo is hot crowded and expensive, much better places in the island. I feel like Santo Domingo is like the NY cost of living. Just like in the US lots of people are moving to say Florida and Texas to escape NY and CA people in DR need to look at other towns.
I think people understand you can live cheaper. Not everyone moving to Dominican Republic is looking to save a dollar. Many want to maintain a parallel lifestyle they had in their home country or upgrade to a better lifestyle. This video are for those people. I didn't move here to downgrade. And I know Dominican Doctors and Lawyers that live on way more than that. And $2500 a month is pocket change to them.
@@JayAbroadI would love to see a video what you can afford on 1k 1.5k 2k and 2.k it be a more realistic type of life style and then folks can choose and have an idea because I’m sure most people who come across this video seeing 2500 will be a turn off when is not realistic my father for example gets 1500 in SS retirement he would choose to stay in the US and struggle but he has travel to DR after all half my bloodline is from there and he knows he can live like a king with half of this check. No hate I love the video and the information is solid just saying there are ranges for me I’ll never live in SD but places like Bani, Barahona, San Jose de Ocoa are true paradises and you can live on 1/4 what it will cost to live in SD. Keep up the videos they are great just love to see a large range.
Great video! I pay myself $4,000 per month while living here in Thailand, (17 months here so far), and that's easily 60% more than I need. Looks like I'd live great in DR with $4,000 per month, too. Your videos are very inspiring and got me thinking to start the process and move back to DR this year. New York prices is getting out of control . Any suggestions for where to find jobs online ?
I could live there comfortably with 2500 a month if i don't chase skirts 😂😂. Or maybe settle with a 600 usd a month for apt rental and the other 400 on a skirt 😅😅

@@DWilliam1 that’s not true, a lot of people who can afford to live comfortably in the US and some regular foreigners who invested their money over the years who are millionaires, but want the experience of living abroad and let’s face it increase their chances of finding a younger pretty romantic partner that will be interested in them.
"I know you guys are lazy!" Love it! 😂

Everyone asked that question! 👍🏽 i shared on post & FB
I’m a Army veteran with 100% VA rating. So I’m sitting at 4k a month free for the rest of my life. I know the VA has an office in the DR and I’m strongly strongly thinking of living there maybe 3-4 months out of the year
Brother, if you getting $4k a month I'm not sure why you still living in the US😅. Time to upgrade your quality of life.
With 4000 USD your a capo here.
Brother I am sitting in the same position. Do you know about the Pensionado visa? I am applying for mine. Me and my wife are going to buy a house in Bani. We also got a chinola farm in Peralta. It's a extra income for us also.
I am in the same position 100 percent for the rest of my life I reach out to brother Jay before still thinking about it
I need u to do one for a family of 5… 3/4 bedrooms 2/3 bathrooms
At 4 bedrooms you will need a house.
Appreciate another great video
Much appreciated

Bien with a B!!
Great information. Thanks Jay

great video Thank you Jay
You're welcome 🙏🏾
The apartments shown are better than my apt. in NY and for significantly less 😮
Hopefully the rent justifies what you're making off of NYC 😁
Jay that was an awesome breakdown 🫡
Thanks bro, I appreciate it. Glad it was helpful.

Love the video 👏🏼
Thank you!!
Jay, please also make a video about the cost of buying and maintenance of a vehicle, insurance, registration and gas a month. And 2-3 bedroom apts for a family of 4.
Ok, will do.
Great Breakdown. Santo Domingo Norte is becoming a great option as well. ✌
I agree.
Thank you.

Nice video, I have a question but its all good if you can't answer, why did you elect to or need to keep your U.S number while living in the D.R?
I still do business in the States. Also, with all my accounts, ie credit cards, bank accounts, etc. When you need that one time pass code that is sent by text you have to have an American number.
@@JayAbroad Thank you. I thought so but just wanted to confirm so I know to keep my number.

Yes... 👌🏾👌🏾

😅😅😅 are those countries good countries to live?
@@JayAbroad from my researches they looks nice especially Botswana (if the infos are true, Botswana is one of the best places in the world, safe, high standard of living, free healthcare, free school, no corruption, clean cities...). This is a place we will definitely check and see. The DR since we already know the country, it is easy to go and spend a few year to get out of our comfort zone
What's the name of your favorite cigar shop I'm here for a week I wanna check it out
Arturo Fuentes is my favorite
Great video way more affordable then the US.

@@CarlitoswayDR Good morning sir from retirement here Thailand the, native grown foods will NOT be expensive any developing Country But with All Island nations it’s all the other Necessities that if they’re not Manufactured on any Island nation Those (necessary life items) are going to either be very difficult to get if at all Or Super expensive
As I being an older man 63 yrs old now that began my Manosphere 😜global Experiences 1996 I’m going provide some helpful information for choosing retirement Expatriation living and standards that perhaps one day you’ll call to mind when in real need . I (apologize for the lengthy response 🙏🏾
(1) You can not use your being close to family and friends as a guideline when deciding (what is or what will be your ideal international retirement living ,Your financial situation “ when “you’re older in retirements advanced yrs will dictate that choice and not “Our feelings “ if you’re blessed to live long otherwise there’s no reason to internationally Expatriate .
(2) Any country you choose , you can and should as I have take the opportunity to go there as a tourist to stay for a couple of times on. 60day to 90day tourist visas and Try hard to learn the language and culture it’ll open up more possibilities an truer experiences
(3) Do not take American Stereotypical Thinking Anywhere outside of that country U.S. when visiting other nations (in your statement where you wrote as if the Whole of Asia is prostitution (unless that was a mistake ) if not You need to re-adjust your view because it’s either from No experience just typing from young black RUclips travel Vloggers experiences without your own travel experience (To see the Rest of the Country In all of the Asian nations ) as I have done and done to in other nations in Europe & North Africa only 2 South America countries Brazil & Mexico .
A RUclips Vlogger is not an Expat the 2 are very different VISAS one is a temporary tourist visa. and the other is of more permanent resident granted immigration office Visa
This below is the criterion you should use when choosing a Country to Retire expatriated in
(A). Safety Safety especially for when your older )
(B) Make sure that country has more than a few Level 1 Level 2 hospital trauma hospitals Available with Advanced affordable healthcare Options having Oncologist , Internal medicine, Cardiology , Trained dentistry, developed ambulance transport,
because sooner or later We are all going to need those life saving services and in the U.S those are NOT Very affordable unless “you have wealthy family and friends “(C) a wide variety of Affordable quality housing options for all budgets without having to make too many sacrifices.
(D) Make sure A developed electric grid not having no regular power outages in 2024
(E) Look for how that destination country is affected by Natural disasters and try to make sure your not as impacted by it in the area you choose
(F) Give careful consideration and try to live in a country with developed affordable transportation infrastructure , roads , trains , buses , Airports Affordable car options
(G) an advanced Banking System with many brand branch options and if Necessary if they have an American satellite branch office in the Major city With Favorable Currency Exchange rates as this will also affect your monthly budget from time to time
H) Choose a country with a U.S. Consulate or Embassy that is fairly large having a lot of citizens services
(I) That country should have a legal system that is fair and don’t have corrupt police that prey on the foreigners or tourists and exercise nationalism and bigotry for financial gain you should avoid any country that has any hint of that Also that country should have easy options of legal foreigner ownership of property house or condo with laws that protect .
Once a month is good, $190.00 a week to spend is good
Thank you for the video; very informative. But for me as a single old man, I will not be able to live in DR. I am going to Colombia.
Thanks again!
Best of luck!
Great video! I pay myself $4,000 per month while living here in Thailand, (17 months here so far), and that's easily 60% more than I need. Looks like I'd live great in DR with $4,000 per month, too. I'm a Puerto Rico native/born. Spanish is my primary language. Would be dope living in DR, and taking easy trips to PR from time to time.
Thanks bro. Yes $4k a month is doable here even thought Thailand I hear is a lot cheaper than DR. You check it out to see if you like it.
