@@billbauer9795 A quick look at the website shows about $3000 to $5000 (I'm assuming Australian dollars, so whatever that conversion rate is) per person for either gold or platinum depending on the rooms, etc.

The Ghan seems like a rite of passage into retirement for a lot of Aussies! My parents have just retired, luckily with enough money they can afford trips like this every year.

My wife & I did this trip from Darwin to Adelaide also in Platinum for our wedding anniversary. What a journey - great meals, drinks, excursions, staff & a great way to socialize with fellow travelers - many from overseas. I'm aiming to do the Adelaide to Darwin journey soon. @@GreenerGrass Also, I think a tour of Spanish Luxury train travel, would be good as well. There are many reviews of other Luxury European trains, but few about Spain.
Did the same in 2018. Going south, a stop in Coober Pedy is included but not going northbound.
@Jeb Brooks, not sure if you know but the journey from Darwin to Adelaide has onboard excursions/activities you can do that are different to the Adelaide to Darwin run.
My parents did the trip for their 50th anniversary. Unfortunately their coincided with the first trip of the season and couldn't go past Alic Spings due to flooding. They enjoyed it nonetheless
They managed to create such a spacious and luxury room on a train. Amazing.

@@GreenerGrass ik, they have 2 others like it the Indian Pacific (Sydney-Perth) and the great southern (Melbourne-Brisbane) they really are spectacular trains I would love to journey on them but they are so expensive lol

My brother used to drive both the ghan and the indian pacific back in the 90's. He was based at Port Augusta and would drive from there to Alice Springs before the rest of the track was finished. he loved it. Great video. Hope you enjoyed our unique Aussie outback

In 1984 I took the Indian Pacific after spending 3 months traveling through Australia. It was a wonderful goodbye to a fabulous country. The experience was almost the same just a little older lol

For those who don’t know; when it’s the summer season (November to February), the Ghan trains are used for the Great Southern train from Adelaide to Brisbane due to the hot sun warping the tracks

@@Originalman144 Plus it’s too hot for the trains to run through the desert sections where it can get up to 50°C
I believe much of the route is continous welded rail. Temperature expansion and contraction can be a problem. Sections of bolted together rail doesn't have this problem.
it's simply more of a business decision. The summer is not the tourist season in the northern territory for a reason. The caravan parks along the way lie near empty. I've been through it in the middle of December and i've lived in qld my whole life. A tourist from any cold weather nation would not survive those extreme heat

I don't comment much but, Jeb thank you for making these videos. I can recall one very very early morning my girlfriend and I were laying on our couch watching your train videos just absolutely enamored at what we were seeing. We both come from the PNW and we talk about taking Amtrak or going on a train anywhere. I really envy what you and your wife get to do and I hope I can reach that point in my life with my partner where we get to travel and see sights we would never think too see. Unfortunately I had to move down south so I no longer am able to have that close feeling of being able to sit on the couch and binge your videos with her.... but whenever I do see an upload from you it reminds me of that truly great time I had with her that I will never forget, we both do really enjoy your videos. Its a very comforting thing to watch. She's planning on coming down to visit in late may and Im going to book a small commuter train for us so we can go visit the next city over. Your love for travel and trains is truly beautiful and I want to thank you for bringing that comfort and reminder of that time I shared with my lady. Much love and respect for you and your wife.

A new video from Jeb is always a highlight of the weekend, regardless of the mode of travel!
Although the both of you definitely enjoyed the journey, I guess you could say your iPad very much didn't 😂. Yup, the Outback sand is quite red! This is because Australia happens to have a perfect environment for oxidation. This occurs in rocks that contain high amounts of iron. In this type of environment, these rocks actually begin to rust. As the rust expands, it weakens the rock and helps break it apart. The oxides produced through this process give the ground its reddish hue.
And that telegraph station you saw played a role in the founding of Alice Springs! Although the Arrernte people have lived in the area for at least 30,000 years, Alice Springs was established in 1861 by John McDouall Stuart during an expedition through Central Australia. Originally called Stuart, it was renamed Alice Springs when the Australian Overland Telegraph Line repeater station was constructed. Playing a key role in connecting Darwin to Adelaide, the telegraph line was completed in 1872, spanning 3,200 kilometers! So both The Ghan and the telegraph line are incredible feats and truly show that anything is possible as long as you believe and never give up.
Supposedly lived there for 30,000 years. Hard to carbon date anything when little is left. I wish people would understand these claims. A piece of paint on a wall carbon dated doesn’t mean the current people were the ones painting it.

Hi Jeb Suzanne. Great editing and video. I'm a Locomotive Engineer in NZ. Most of my fellow Locomotive Engineer mates Male Female jumped ship 20 years ago to Australia and ended up driving the Ghan . Up front 2 of them do 12 hour shifts and retire to their mobile home behind the Locomotives. Everytime they're back in NZ they always visit me trying to convince me to join them. Unfortunately I find 11 hours max driving our own trains around NZ is enough let alone 56 hours in a straight line. If anything I would like to explore the rail trips around Alaska as a few of my colleagues say that is a great railway journey to experience. I enjoyed your video and finally would like to say NZ has a great view of Railway journeys that might interest you. Stunning? Looks like the bush to me. As an Australian I can say we have some nice scenic locations but they are few and very far between. A better rail journey would be the one they did in Peru. Beautiful scenery along that whole journey.

@@contactluke80 I agree. I've done a lot of travelling throughout Aus for work, and it's depressing if you aren't in a good frame of mind going into it.
@@joshchapman4753 I've done that train in Peru, but even endless mountain scenery can get humdrum. and that's coming from someone who's also trekked in the Himalayas and hiked the Inca trail connected to that Peruvian train. I spent much of my life in the Australia outback, and sure, it can seem dull if you're driving endless stretches with next to no scenery, like the drive from Camooweal to Three Ways in the NT, but by and large there's so much variety in that wide landscape of ours that it has a beauty all its own.
I originally subbed for a plane video but the more I see your train videos I get more and more interested in that too! Great stuff

I used to work on The Ghan and Indian Pacific in 2006, and it was such a great experience. I see they have upgraded quite a bit since then as it used to be just Red Kangaroo and Gold Kangaroo. I don’t believe they had platinum back then. I hope to see more of your visit!
Red kangaroo was buy or bring you food and bus like seating nowadays is all about $$$ priced to overseas visitors
Another video of the Ghan mentioned that the ride on the older Alice to Adelaide section was rougher than the northern section. Either one would better than the original narrow guage line.

Friends of mine went on it, they said they didn’t sleep well and it was extremely expensive for Platinum but a once in a lifetime trip. They then joined a luxury adventure cruise from Darwin to Broome and saw some beautiful coastline. Thanks for the video

The Ghan (and The Indian Pacific) has been on our bucket list radar for a few years now. Was going to be a "birthday ending in zero' trip in 2021 but covid intervened. This was a great travelog Jeb, I got a good feel for the trip from watching you and Suzanne experience the 3 days. Being a kiwi, I appreciate how different the red centre is, to what I'm used to living everyday. You will have noticed the extreme difference too, having travelled both countries recently. Desolate, yet peaceful and at times, provoking. Thanks for doing what you and Suzanne do.

Thanks Jeb and Suzanne! The Indian Pacific is the one on my bucket list, but The Ghan also looks cool so this video has made me add it to the bucket list too! Shame you didn't get to explore Adelaide that much because it's quite the interesting city! Adelaide was named after Queen Adelaide who was the wife of King William IV, but the Kaurna people called the area Tarntanya which means "red kangaroo place". Surveyor Colonel William Light was charged with surveying the city layout. The result was unique, the world's only city within a park, which it still is today. Surrounded by 900 hectares of parkland!
The Adelaide terminal of The Ghan and Indian Pacific didn't open until 1984! It opened to allow Australian National to vacate the main Adelaide railway station. In 1997, the Australian government sold Australian National's passenger operations to Great Southern Rail, which is now Journey Beyond.

I did this when I was 7!! It was amazing. Adelaide is so pretty as well. I remember it all vividly! Good times.
The cabin accomodation and food looked outstanding , very inviting , however , they say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder , and perhaps I’m different , but that Aussie outback scenery is not the idea of beauty in my eyes . Great video Jeb , I really enjoyed it . Happy and safe travels .
It is actually very nice, it doesn't look overly impressive on camera but in person the flowers and trees are very unique. It's totally different to anywhere else in the world

As an Aussie I agree. I have driven across Australia and up North. Gets a bit old. I couldn't do this train trip. I would be bored out of my mind. But we all have different interests. But then I have driven up North to a really remote location where you took a satellite phone and beacon it was that remote. For a female it was a bit scardy if I'm honest.
I agree. For me a good landscape is lush green rolling hills with mountains in the background or a nice coastline or all 3.

The brakes on the bikes are that way (Front on RH side, Rear on LH side) to match motorcycles. All motorcycles have front brake on RH side and clutch lever on LH side. Scooter or mopeds with no gears replace that left lever with the rear brake. 😊
Yes, if anything us Americans have our bike brakes backwards. I know it had something to do with preventing falls when braking and using hand signals, but nobody has been regularly sticking their arm straight out into traffic for a long time now.
You 2 are made for each other, the same sorta humor and a great dynamic in your relationship! For feedback, give a also a jebscore on trains (Seat/bed, Lounge in the train, Food, overall entertainment, Service, Bathroom (30 stars in total)) so its more suitable for trains. I am following your channel for quite some time now and the channel deserves more than a million subs for the quality of the vids! Keep it up!!

Interesting to contrast your trip with Paul Lucas' when he took the Indian Pacific which goes west to east across Australia instead of south to north. Have you thought of trying that one? I did the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth and it was a journey of a lifetime. Loved it, the train, the people and the beautiful Australia. Great views and upload.

I lived in Katherine in the 90s /early 00s & the Gorge will always hold a special place in my heart. Midnite hikes, school camps, weekend canoeing, swimming. Every time someone visited we did the Gorge cruise. Fun fact, the crocodile movie 'Rogue' with Michael Vartan was filmed there.

Fabulous review. Sad that, for Australians, it's cheaper to go overseas or on a cruise than to do this. It's extremely expensive.
Also Aussie, I agree, a week or two long cruise is even way cheaper than this.

We did the journey in reverse last year with my husband’s parents and really enjoyed it. I think the food on board was the highlight for me as well as meeting other travellers, many of whom had interesting stories to tell. As it was summer, we didn’t stop off in Coober Pedy unfortunately. Did you stay in Darwin for a bit? It’s quite different to the rest of Australia.
