Let's ride the mighty Ghan! This iconic outback passenger rail service has been traversing the Red Centre for close to a century, and embodies the pioneering spirit of the colonial Afghan cameleers who opened up central Australia. It's an experience that has found its way into Australian folklore, and rightly so.
Are you thinking about booking a journey on the Ghan? In this episode of our RUclips travel series, we take you on board the Ghan's 2,979-kilometre trip from Adelaide to Darwin. This video is a guide to what you can expect in Gold Service - including the standard of guest cabins, meals, and off-train excursions (which are all included in the cost of your fare).

I traveled all around Australia as a kid. My fiancé never traveled so I’m considering the Ghan for our honeymoon. I took him to cairns and Gold Coast last year which is where he proposed 😅 thank you for this review

Hey Hayley! Thanks for the feedback and congrats! You will love the Ghan. I think you can do it in the opposite direction from Darwin to Adelaide and it takes an extra night. Anyway, enjoy! Adam

We travelled on the Ghan in 2013. We stayed in a gold superior cabin which is priced between gold twin and platinum. We did not want bunks and the gold superior has a double bed and also a fold down one above it. They are small but sufficient. There is only a couple of these cabins available. Back then the Ghan did not stop at Marla. The first stop was Alice Springs. Our tour included the telegraph station, old gaol and Anzac hill where you can look over the whole of Alice Springs. At Katherine we also did the gorge cruise which as you said is fantastic. After arriving at Darwin we spent 10 days there. We did several tours including the bombing of Darwin, Kakadu and Litchfield. We could not see the point of going all that way and getting straight on a plane back home. The next year we did the Indian Pacific and flew from Perth to Broome for a week.

Hi Brian. Thanks for that. 👍 All good to know. We are hoping to do the Indian Pacific at some stage too. Did you do the full trip? Regards Adam @ TOT

      Hi Adam,
We did do the full trip from Sydney to Perth. I have a family connection with Broken Hill. In 1921 my mother migrated from England at the age of 11 and they went to Broken Hill where her father worked in the mine. Unfortunately he died in 1927 but it was a medical problem, not a mine accident. I was also fascinated with the town of Cook on the Nullarbor Plain. It has a population of 2 and it is where the trains refuel and take on water. Crews also change there. When the railroad was being built it was where the workers stayed. It also had a school and a hospital. It does however still have a souvenir shop.

      Hi Adam,
I have already watched that video. It was great and I have visited most of the places in it. We went to Broken Hill for a holiday and to find family connections.

Hoping to do this next year. I notced dining is 4 per table. Can you sit as a couple or are you put with others? Also, do suitcases fit in cabin or s it best with a small bag?

Hey Tim. No worries. There’s not a huge amount of space in the cabins, but I think from memory there was storage for luggage under the couch seat/lower bunk. They do try and seat you with others for dinner as tables of four, but if you go a bit later you can usually get a table to yourselves. Adam 👍

I would have watched it but for the irritating accompanying music.

I did this years ago. I encountered the rudest, most un-cooperative Steward I have ever had to suffer. He was that bad I put a complaint about him. Never again.

What a dreadfully superficial review. A waste of eight minutes.
