You dad worked with my father figure, my moms dad. He was a metallurgical engineer and they did a lot of testing on the skin of the aircraft and the stories about the testing of the engines were hilarious. Were you part of the group of kids who got to go up not too long after the unveiling? He passed on some years ago, as did the guys who I grew up knowing who worked on projects like the Saturn 5 and the moon lander (another family member actually got to work with Werner Von Braun, his stories from Huntsville and Houston were incredible...), but I'm sure you probably remember the pride with which they did their work.

I was also invited to work on the 747 but the year was 1987 I worked on the first 747-400 and continued on for the next five and half years. Then I spent from 1993 until I retired from Boeing on the 777 line. I was an assembly mechanic and ended my time doing the same job. I'm also with Suzanne on this one! 747 rules in every way! Nothing finer! My uncle used to fly these beautiful planes when he was a pilot for United. He is now retired and owns several small planes of his own. He hates flying commercial 🤣 because if he is not in control of the plane, he doesn't trust it! This is where our family history kind of sucks, my aunts father was one of the pilots involved in our nation's most deadliest airplane accident ever.😢

@@repairmanjoe8081 Yes it is an iconic plane, but i still prefer flying on an Airbus, ive flown on this same route many times on a 747 between Germany and South Africa, if i count right 6 times, all that i find bad about a 747 it is much more prone to turbulence in compare to an Airbus of Swiss Air on same route, over the Sahara desert a 747 falls and bumps badly, whereas a A340 just glides, i flew on same route again in May on Air France Boeing 777 and its same as a A340, just glides

The 747 took me from Australia to my first trip overseas with my family for the first time. In fact it really revolutionised travel between Australia and the rest of the world.
It took me to New York for the first time with my dad after graduating high school. I was guttered when Qantas retired them during covid and I couldn’t go on the last ever flight. It is such a iconic aeroplane that changed aviation history.

what he didn't say is this flight from Jan Smuts to Frankfurt is very expensive on Lufthansa, i fly every year between Germany and South Africa and Swiss air is much cheaper, but i understand he has the money to fly 1st class, i flew now in May between SA and Germany and flew Air France on the same route as it was cheapest flight, and the 747 is a very bumpy flight, over the Sahara desert the plane falls badly ,, i prefer a swiss air flight on same route, thy use Airbus A340 which just glides, yes 747 looks majestic but for me a very bumpy flight,

    • @Jasewoz

I don’t think it’s fair to blame the 747 for your turbulent flight over the Sahara! I flew both the B747-400 and A340-200/300/600 and, in my opinion, the much heavier 747 handles turbulence better. Overall, I prefer the simpler, smarter, newer Airbus design.
My first choice as a passenger remains undoubtedly the B777-300ER. That thing is a beast! Massive, smooth, stable and modern (but never piloted it).

@@Jasewoz all I don't like about the 777 is the narrow seats 💺💺 in economy, well I've spoken to many people who have flown 747 have same complaint about bad turbulence, Airbus 330 flies for me the smoothest, but it's like food, some like certain types of food others not, same with flying, each person has a different viewpoint of what is a smooth flight ✈️ or not,

On some occasions I was seated in the upstairs area, which was like flying in a private plane with a dedicated attendant. Other times was seated downstairs (in front of the pilot). I love this channel. So many channels that do travel reviews come across as entitled or nitpicky but this channel is always so positive with fair critiques. You can really tell they love to travel and don’t take it for granted. I’ve noticed that often times, the crews are described as good to excellent and I think part of that as they make the videos they are also kind and respectful customers. In every aspect of life, I believe you get what you give so even though it’s someone’s job in customer service to take care of you, you will have an infinitely better experience if you are nice and polite with them.
As for why US pilots have the seatbelt sign on more, I’m pretty sure it’s because of so many incidents with sudden rough air. The FAA even requires the announcement be made to suggest you wear your seatbelt even if the sign isn’t on just in case. It’s a way so that if someone does get injured, they can say the sign was on but they chose not to abide by it.

    • @JDowPCs
      @JDowPCs 9 месяцев назад

Agree with your comments on Jeb's channel. I voluntarily always wear my belt (loosened a bit for comfort when the sign is off). Sure, the odds of encountering severe clear-air-turbulence are extremely rare, but I'll take a belt over my lap that I don't even feel than a remote chance of bonking my head into the overhead and injuring myself. I'm 6'4 so I have even less head distance to travel.

I’m a first time viewer. I’ve been flying for 60 years-maybe twice a year-all over the world. Sometimes I’ve been more wealthy, sometimes I’ve been less wealthy. I’ve never flown first class. The experience depicted on this video is vastly different from nearly everyone else’s in the world. It’s frankly fascinating. The flight you took, if I had done it in “cattle class” would have included uncomfortable if you could find any, seats in boring, unpleasant waiting areas with nothing to eat except expensive junk, chaotic boarding of passengers, indifferent trending to scornful flight attendants “serving” dry cruddy food and collecting the trays back as quickly as they can.
I still travel, but as I age the strain of non-first class flying is an increasing factor in my decision making. Maybe it’s time.

Hey Jeb, thanks for these great insights
You probably heard it before every take-off:"turbulence can occure unexpectedly at any time. please keep your seat belt fastened whenever seated." that's why LH uses the seat belt signs only when encountering more than light turbulences. From moderate turbulence on, even the cabin crew has to take their seats and service is interrupted.
    Keep your great work up!

    Loved this review!
Pilots in Europe/any non-US airline are less prone to turn on the seatbelt signs, because everyone else (non-US) is less litigious. I've noticed that over many years - particularly flying UA a few months back - that as soon as there was a single bump, the seatbelt sign went on, and for aaaaages... Pilots for other airlines/nationalities have a more pragmatic view I think. A bump here and there - it's expected, so why stop people from being able to go to the bathroom (for example ... not a real life situation ... or was it...... Ha!)

Seats in the back rows do tend to shrink down the row sizes, to accommodate the tapering of the fuselage, but it’s better to sit the row BEHIND the first one, as the IFE screens in the back of the wider row in front will be off center in the middle of your armrest! Lufthansa A340 from Frankfurt to JFK, most of economy is 2-4-2, but the last 5 or so rows drop to 2-3-2, since 3 of us were flying, we opted not to have to share that extra seat (though we have been lucky before where the adjacent seats are empty, this flight was completely full.)
