Of all the trains you've been on, this has to be the top of the line. The ticket cost is way (way, way) out of my price range so thanks for letting me ride along with you. Suzanne, I know what it feels like to have dental issues when you're away from home...not fun at all! But it looks like you lucked out finding a good dentist in Tokyo. Until next time, happy trails!
I have been longing for traveling on SHIKISHIMA. It's my dream train. Thank you for the video. I really enjoyed watching and almost felt I was on the train, too!
One thing I noticed is that the driver points at every signal he looks at, as I understand it this is part of training to add muscle memory to taking note of everything you need to watch for.
It has always been that way for the high-speed, high-end trains. When you see (point) and say something, your brain works better and registers. Does what I say and see match what I expect to see? Because of the glass, you can' hear him. But he is speaking. "Green light". "Forward"
@@walterharoldbishop it has its pros and cons. There are various issues In their business world. But when it comes to trains, those are safety behaviors. If you want to remember something a bit better, say it out loud. Versus your internal dialogue.
Jeb and Suzanne I really love your rail reviews from various countries, the rocky mountaineer, the Canadian, the Australian Gan, the polar express and Amtrak. All I can say is wow! What an adventure!
Wow was my first response upon seeing the title. After watching the video it was WOW!!!! This was one of the most beautiful trips y’all have taken. I really enjoyed seeing parts of Japan that I never even knew existed. I had no idea they had a wine region. I loved seeing the rural areas. Thank you for showing me the world. Your excellent menu placement was much appreciated. You both put out a wonderful video. Thanks again.
I worked for a Japanese company for years and travelled there often. I did a variety of excursions throughout the country. I don't think I could have justified this trip in my mind, even back then when I was discovering and loving the country. That's a lot of money. But, it is beautiful. And if I paid that price I would have been awake for the entire 36 hours.... some how. Regardless I love this channel, and wish you guys the absolute best in this new year.
The popularity of air travel during the 60's was really the death knell for US rail travel. Each railroad had their premier passenger trains. Ex: Atlantic Coast Line had The Champion, Seaboard Air Line had The Silver Meteor, Southern Railway had The Crescent, and Norfolk & Western had The Powhatan Arrow. By the late 60's the railroads were losing money on each passenger train they operated. Amtrak would assume nearly all passenger traffic, and equipment in 1971. The Carter deregulation era saw the abandonment of many rail lines nationwide. By the 2000's, several trains were combined with others or abolished altogether. Brightline seems to be proving very successful in Florida. Hopefully, that service could eventually expand across the country.
Omg I love your review on this train. Being in Japan, I think I have seen it once or twice, not quite sure what that train is, but through your introduction the experience looks so impressive and exquisite! And yes, there is no place quite like Japan for trains. It's pretty special.

I used to live near Tokyo. I was waiting for my local train when this one approached. I was confused by it. It's beautiful, but it also looked so out of place. Some people in the lounge waved as they passed by. I thought, "they must be filthy rich" 😅 Now I know what it looks like inside. Thank you for allowing us to see the experience!
Thank you for taking us with you on this amazing journey! I love watching your videos from home here in southern Germany all the time! They are so inspiring for future journeys as well, although this one might have to wait untill I finished my master's :D Best wishes from Germany and keep up the amazing work!
I believe you could honestly say the Shiki-Shima is the QM2 of Japan. The forward observation cars would be a railfan's dream here in the US! Aside from the Rocky Mountaineer, it's truly unfortunate we don't have this type of classy service here.
This is sooooo amazing!! Thanks for sharing. I am going to put in an application! Japan is my new favourite place on the planet. Been there three times now. Did not know about his train.
Hello Jeb, I was looking forward to this review ever since the teaser to get your perspective. There are not really ANY reviews of the Shiki-shima experience. My wife and I was able to ride this train in December for a 2N/3D Trip to Aomori/Akita/Matsushima. You covered the experience really well, so I only want share some of my anecdotes. We are in our 30's. Like you, we were the only foreign couple (sort of, I'm half-Japanese, half-Caucasian), my Caucasian wife speaks very little Japanese. I was expecting to translate everything, however this was not the case. Though I can speak Japanese fluently, when my wife was present they spoke in English to ensure my wife was included. Were your announcements also done in English? Our announcements were also done in English, but they also included additional descriptions of the areas that we passed through (whether it be castle ruins/famous location). We all knew those English announcements were done "just" for us 😆 Additional notes as a foreign traveler: - Every excursion, we were provided English brochures without asking (I was given both languages). - Every menu was provided additionally in English, and customized for my wife, who also like you, has an allergy. We never had to mention her allergy. They were are all aware of it. - On the bus, we had dedicated staff sit near us *if* I needed help translating for my wife or if I had any questions about the excursions (I had several) The details were incredible, it is difficult to document everything. Every chef came to us to greet us, and really made us feel special. When my wife complimented the food and joked about getting additional pieces. They brought her more. By far the most memorable is - the staff. Each staff member knew our names and made an effort to converse with us. The trip is really dense and intimate so we often had conversations with many of the crew members. Some staff even remembered some of the answers to the questionnaire we answered after we were accepted applicants. I could type a novel on how great the staff was. At the end of the journey, we wanted to get a quick picture with some of the staff that had helped us; not only did we get that picture - the entire 40+ staff members took a group photo with us in the center. This was incredible and we will never forget it. I would have brought pitchforks on behalf of the Shiki-shima crew if anything negative came out of your review🤣 P.S. It took us 4x before we finally got accepted.
Wow! That was such a great recap and matched our experience too. Thanks for sharing. Agreed: The staff was truly “out of this world!” So attentive, warm, kind, and proactive!!
Actually there are a few in Japanese, but unfortunately, none (that I know) have English subtitles. This is the first review of Shikishima in English. (There was a Japan Railway Journal segment, but I don't count that as a review).

I’ve been watching ALL your Train videos the last two days, don’t exactly know why. And now you come out with this? Come on! That’s just perfect. I’ll just kick back, open up a cold one and enjoy! Thanks for making my day! Love you guys, keep going, we’ll see you on the rails…in the sky…on the road…you get it. I’ll see myself out.
I’m new to your videos, but am loving each one. My two cats keep me tied down, unfortunately, but it’s fun traveling with you both… however vicariously it is.
Those Japanese trains are amazing. I saw a video where the head of the railway had to make an apology on national television because they were seven minutes late!. Can you imagine?!. Great video, thanks again Mr. Brooks.
Wow what an incredible experience! That's why I love this channel...so many unique travel experiences. Never knew such a train existed lol but woah what elegance and luxury and so exclusive. Congrats! Great job!
Jeb and Suzanne. You both make interesting videos that other v-loggers could learn from. Your reviews look for the positives and you jump into the experiences without hesitation. For e.g we watched someone else’s QM2 and thought no, it looked like a car ferry. However after watching your video we have now booked. The enjoyment and diverse trips you take comes across as does your contagious enthusiasm. You’re both probably our favourite travel v-loggers. Keep it up!
Back to my favorite; your train videos! My dad was the mechanic on the Turbo train in Providence, RI back in the day. He and my husband, both passed, but my favorite trips with my husband were on trains. Even short trains like North Conway New Hamphire dinner train (food was amazing) and then the train ride to the top of Mount Washington was so much fun!
This is the best overall video on your channel yet! I had never seen or heard anything about this particular train before, so thanks for taking us along for the ride 👍🚄
I was hoping for you to ride either this train or one of the more conventional, but still very stylish express trains like the Odakyu Romancecar. I think Japan incorporates creative styling into trains like no other country. Some of the designs are a little jarring to be honest, but they experiment and apply variety in a way that I can only respect. Your presentation was great as usual!
I am so happy you did not choose the shark fin. What you did eat looked amazing though. What an amazing experience for you both and you deserve it. I know you’re hard-working and I enjoy your vlogs so much.

This has to be one of the most amazing trip you both have shared with us! I hope one day I can do this myself!
I hope so too!
as someone who probably doesn't make hotel reservations unless there's room service and a loyalty program, you are the very last person to be talking about culture! You don't travel, you hotel and airport hop!@@GreenerGrass

The entire journey appeared to be nothing short of amazing. In addition to bringing us along on the journey, I appreciate how you encourage us to decide for ourselves if such an experience is worth it. That is true with so many life experiences. Rather than trying to convince everyone to do exactly what you are doing, you instead share your experiences and then inform others how to learn more details should they wish. It is then up to us to inquire. Thank you.
I just came back from Japan, I visited Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Amazing country ! Both culturally and culinary, can't wait to get back there !

I love the very modern yet classic look of the train. It feels sort of timeless
Love Suzzane’s “WOW” it’s always so genuine and energetic!
One thing I noticed is that the driver points at every signal he looks at, as I understand it this is part of training to add muscle memory to taking note of everything you need to watch for.
It's also used to stop fatigue trying to keep the driver awake
I noticed the same
It has always been that way for the high-speed, high-end trains. When you see (point) and say something, your brain works better and registers. Does what I say and see match what I expect to see? Because of the glass, you can' hear him. But he is speaking. "Green light". "Forward"
i think japanese work ethic and diligence are unparalleled.
I, also, really enjoy their rail journeys. They are so interesting.

The windows of the train look like they are butterflies!
Fascinating! It makes me want to take a train more than to fly. I wish the US could improve the rail travel. Thank you Jeb and Suzanne.

Thank you for coming to Japan and introducing Shikijima ^_^ Please come to Japan again♪❤😂

I love your vids Jeb! They get an instant click when they're on my feed. I love your mentality of trying new things even when you're not sure you'll enjoy it. Your voiceovers also make your videos so much more engaging. I'm not a fan of travel videos that are silent, so I really appreciate that about your videos.
Awesome! Thank you!
The Japanese [service & beyond] culture is beyond comprehension. Its one of those thing you have to experience for yourself. I've ALWAYS enjoyed my visit.
Hi Jeb and Suzanne,
Thanks for the great video of the Japanese train. What a beautiful train 🚂! Jeb you said it right, this is futuristic and traditional at the same time!
Here’s to more in 2024!
Be well and safe,
Peter

The people waving at the train when departing was a beautiful sight.
Japanese style and elegance at their best! Unbeatable taste. Haute cuisine. Thank U 4 sharing. 👍
Agree! Doesn’t get better than a Japanese train!
I think it would be a good idea to research services in other countries and absorb what you think are good.
This is sooooo amazing!! Thanks for sharing. I am going to put in an application! Japan is my new favourite place on the planet. Been there three times now. Did not know about his train.
Hello Jeb,
I was looking forward to this review ever since the teaser to get your perspective.
We all knew those English announcements were done "just" for us 😆
Additional notes as a foreign traveler:
- Every excursion, we were provided English brochures without asking (I was given both languages).
- Every menu was provided additionally in English, and customized for my wife, who also like you, has an allergy. We never had to mention her allergy. They were are all aware of it.
- On the bus, we had dedicated staff sit near us *if* I needed help translating for my wife or if I had any questions about the excursions (I had several)
The details were incredible, it is difficult to document everything.
I would have brought pitchforks on behalf of the Shiki-shima crew if anything negative came out of your review🤣

One of the Japanese RUclipsrs did the winter tour. He had room 901, and took his mom, lucky mom. What an amazing train.
Can't wait to see other RUclipsrs adventures on this train.

Amazing video and an amazing train experience! Looking spiffy Jeb! You seem to have lost weight. The suit fits you great and that rare Japanese boutique exclusive SBGE301 is the cherry on the top!
Love the SBGE301! We picked it up just before this trip. It’s the perfect memento!!
I grew up along the Illinois Central Line. My hometown had a roundhouse for the NY Central which intersected the IC about two miles from my house. Ours was one of the old Midwest railroad cities. Your videos have reawakened my love of the rails. Thank you.
Thank you for these rail journeys. My partner is a train enthusiast, and we love your videos
Wow!!! and I thought that the Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf was awesome. This Japan luxury train is truly over the top!
Thanks
Wow! Thank you so much for this!!
I love your content man! You and your wife are treasures! I'm going to Japan in May (only my 2nd time ever flying) and I'm super excited!!
Have fun!
Thank you!!
Wow! What a breathtaking train! Thanks for sharing this journey with us.
I’m new to your videos, but am loving each one. My two cats keep me tied down, unfortunately, but it’s fun traveling with you both… however vicariously it is.

OK.....I'm jealous now. What a wonderful trip. Thank you for taking us along
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow!! Can only dream of that kind of experience! Amazing, and thanks for taking us all along
Congrats! Great job!
Been looking forward to this 😉
Looks amazing!
Keep it up!
Wowsers that train left me wowed and amazed. The views looked very stunning and amazing.Happy New Year from New Zealand.
What a BEAUTIFUL TRAIN!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. Hope new trains in America follow what the Japanese have done here.
The train looks amazing and not overly expensive for such a luxurious trip. Thank you for the video!
I always love watching you two travel. Thank you for sharing this with us
I am so happy you did not choose the shark fin. What you did eat looked amazing though. What an amazing experience for you both and you deserve it. I know you’re hard-working and I enjoy your vlogs so much.

Japan have huge train culture so they would have amazing service
That grand seiko is excellent. perfect watch for this experience. Bravo
Wow! That's such a cool train - and to win a lottery spot for it, so cool! This is an awesome video Jeb.
The scenery brought me to tears. We left Japan after almost 6 years last year, and I miss it so much.
Contrast with Alexander the Guest's recent video on the Orient Express and you'd be surprised at how that service fell short compared to this one.
Love the dressed up station master (13:18). Adorable!
I'm glad you are doing videos in Japan. I spent a year on Okinawa 😎🌴
