  • @sackman1886

    I think 21 miles in EV mode is fairly impressive when you consider someone buying this as their daily driver and weekend toy probably commutes under 20 miles each way to and from work during the week. I would save a fortune on gas switching to this (not including the additional electricity cost at the house, but still).

      When you have some cash to spare, put a 4 inch lift on it and get some 35 inch or even 37 inch Nitto Grappler Tires (the EXO Grappler OR the Ridge Grappler) for your offroading needs. If your skid plates ever get bent or "ripped", there are other aftermarket boron steel or even TITANIUM skid plates you can put underneath to get even better bottom coverage.
      In terms of extra gear, ALWAYS buy TWO extra 20 Gallon Jerry Cans you fix to the back of the Jeep for more fuel range AND I would suggest buying FOUR Go-Pro cameras with at least two 4 Gigabyte SSD external hard disk drives so you can RECORD 4K resolution 60 fps video from the front, back and sides of all your off-road adventures. The Go-Pro camera setup is ALSO used for grabbing that MILLION DOLLAR SET OF CRYSTAL CLEAR PHOTOS of a family of Sasquatches (i.e. Bigfoot) looking with envy at your cool new Jeep!
      oh! I would also put a heavy duty WINCH and Bush Bars on the front of the Jeep in case you get stuck in a deep ditch or rut!

      See my responses to some of the other posts. It’s not going to be Prius level PHEV efficient, that is just impossible for a rolling brick. But I am getting a lot better gas mileage than the standard ICE Wrangler for short to mid range driving. My 60 mile commute I average 26 to 27 mpg, much higher when just tooling around town. Much less of a benefit at 100 miles or more between charges, but also great not having range anxiety as can always extend range by just adding gas.

I love my jeep but if jeep would take the cargo area and maybe eat into the floor back there as well, load it up with batteries and get that range up some more. That immediate heat due to the heater running off of electricity instead of the circulated coolant will be amazing in the winter. Pretty amazing time to be alive for technology.

      Once manufacturers switch over to Aluminum-Air batteries that are safer and much higher power (i.e. 4x up to 8x more charge than Li-Ion) the range problems will go away. A higher end Aluminum-Air battery taking up the entire front end where the gas engine goes now and some space within a "skateboard" frame-rail assembly of a Jeep Rubicon level Wrangler, should allow it to go AT LEAST 1600 km (1000 miles!).
      In about 5-to-7 years when newer formulations of the Aluminum-Air batteries start being tested in public, I expect the range to get into the 2500 km (1500 miles!) range on one charge!

      Short answer is yes, that is the least efficient way to run. For most cases it’s better to run it at its default which is hybrid, but if you do run it in eSave, the default of ‘battery save’ is more efficient than ‘battery charge’. Haven’t tested it enough to know how much of a hit ‘battery charge’ is though, but there is a hit.

And the roads may be icy some nights. But there are times when I have pulled over to let a code 3 emergency vehicle pass. And what looked like solid ground is not. 4wd is required to get out without help.
      On the practical side. A Jeep Wrangler will carry more than a Nissan Lief. And can tow.
      I drive various electric, hybrid, and gasoline vehicles as part of my job. My employer offers free electric charging. The people that bought Nissan Leafs. Got rid of them quickly. One guy in 3 days. He got a Nissan Versa instead. That guy also owns a Jeep TJ, Ford F150, and a class A motorhome. He would select the 4xe over a Leaf.

    The advantage of an Hybrid in off road? Fuel economy. The fuel economy of a 100% powered ICE off roader, with this kind of power and torque, and in this kind of environment, is not really good, so I see this as a really good option to lower fuel costs. Well, and on road it gives really good numbers too. Oh, by the way, Roman : ouch!!! That hurts!!

      @Ziplokk and? You have to watch a Comanche here in my country carrying two tons, that's weight, 700 is nothing vs the advantages that this technology gives. What I'm worried is about reliability, maybe there will be some problems that they will have to debug.

    • @davidcarrico3385
      @davidcarrico3385 3 года назад +1

      @Ziplokk for some components (tires and suspension) but electric reduces wear for others (regenerative braking greatly reduces wear on brakes) and engine (doesn’t have to rev as high due to electric boost and doesn’t have to run as often - seen some worried about transition to cold engine but software manages that so it’s not abrupt and warm up allowed).

    The water wasn’t deep enough. The rocks and crawling was nice. But how about driving in desert sands?? Most Jeep’s get stuck unless they have the lift and way larger tires they can run at lower pressure on bead lock wheels??
    Now let’s talk aftermarket mods. My guess is this jeep was made for city people who want the look with some options. If it was me I’ll take a regular gas or diesel wrangler and mod it for I need. My final thoughts are: this won’t sell well if you can’t mod it for REAL off-road driving. On that note I look forward to seeing you guys test it in the real world.

    Great first review, but could someone clarify please - Can you run in hybrid mode (gas and electric) after you've depleted the battery in 21 miles. How do you get the charge for the hybrid if the battery is depleted? Thanks.-

    • @davidcarrico3385
      @davidcarrico3385 3 года назад

      Short answer yes. When the meter says < 1%, the 4xe is still keeping 15% in reserve for a number of reasons, but one is so it can always have some electric assist at those times where it would be most helpful such as off the line. There is continuous recharge happening whenever the gas engine is on and through regenerative braking which is how it works to maintain that hidden 15%. What most people have been seeing at < 1% is no loss of apparent power and mpg between 21 and 26 depending on driving habits and city/highway mix (it will actually do it’s worst at highway).

      Why don’t you think this is useful? I’m getting 26 to 27 mpg on my 60 mile commute. Pretty good for a brick on wheels. That is for a Rubicon 4xe with steel bumper group in 4h-auto. I get even better mileage outside of my commute because most of my driving outside of weekend trips is within 30 miles of home. I also have 375hp and 470lb of torque at my disposal (even when the battery is ‘depleted’ because it keeps 15% in reserve and does regenerative braking and charge from the engine when it’s running to feed the battery). I think it’s a very useful vehicle for anyone who’s average daily trip between charges is 100 miles or less. Over that the diesel might be a better choice.
