  • Marcus Ansems MW has spent 30 years making and learning about wine. He's spent thousands of hours tasting thousands of wines. But can he tell the difference between expensive and cheap wine? In this video he blind tastes a number of wines from around the world in an attempt to answer the question. #wine #mw #winetasting #blindtasting #cellar #cabernetsauvignon #sauvignonblanc #champagne #napa #Chile #newzealand #masterofwine #bordeaux #sparklingwine #redwine #whitewine #italianwine #frenchwine

    This is criminally under viewed..
It is a treat seeing a MW evaluate a wine blind..

Blinds are so much fun. Reality put the senses to the test. Great video.

Thank you for putting your knowledge to the test. This was fun. Please do more blind tasting videos. One can learn so much listening to you describing and trying to narrow down what you think it is in the glass in front of you.

Thanks Erik! It’s not easy, but with practice, if you have a reasonable sense of smell and taste you can become a very good blind taster.

@@marcusansemsmasterofwine that was not an embarrassment at all! It was diabolical to pick those aromatic whites, they are so difficult

Great video, thank you. I have always found Sauvignon Blanc to be the most difficult wine to judge (I'm not a professional). The quality of relatively inexpensive bottles often surprises me. I'm in the UK and over here we have a huge range of SB from all over the world with many outstanding wines in the £10-£15 range. Thanks once again, I look forward to more of your videos.

Marcus, great fun video with a twist. I don't think its often that we see a blind tasting based on expensive versus "cheap" wine of the same varietal. It is enlightening and fun; obviously showing that its well worth spending a bit more to enhance the wine experience.Along the same vein, I wonder if you will do a video on wine competitions? There are so many of them and can the results be trusted or are they just marketing ploys?

Hi GABE, thanks for the great comments. Blind tasting is fun and difficult at the same time! But I know when I was studying to be an MW it helped me tremendously to listen to good tasters, tasting blind, so I thought I might pay it forward! Wine shows are tricky because there is such huge variation in the quality and integrity of each show. I particularly like shows where “qualified” wine tasters taste blind with small numbers of wines at a time. This format reduces palate fatigue and produces more consistency.

Great vid and always interesting to see the process. $18 vs $38 seems a toughy for a cheap vs expensive comparison but maybe that's skewed by the prices where you are and country of origin etc. Anyway good vid and more please! Cheers

Thanks !!! Yes, I think my wife was probably a little mean in the still white wine choices (I probably deserved it) but it makes you realize that it’s a big wine world out there!!!

I hate being overly critical, but (I can't help my self). In a blind tasting the taster should not touch the bottles. They can give a tremendous amount of information.
Edit: otherwise great to show how a knowledgeable wine taster, discerns differences and 'places' the tasted wines.

Dog point is a bit overpriced so that makes it harder to tell the difference as well I think

It’s funny “Dog Point” really polarizes tasters. I’ve spoke to some MW friends who love that “reduced” style. But for me in this tasting it really detracted from the varietal character and sense of place.
