I wondered what happened. Had the tab w/ this link open for a few & when I got back to it a message saying "This video is unavailable" popped up. I thought you'd been busted by THE MAN,
The Phil Collins But Seriously cover was done earlier by Peter Hammill in 1983 for his album Patience, even using similar handwriting. What makes it even more a coincidence is that Collins and Hammill were signed to the Charisma label in the 70's with their respective bands, Genesis and Van Der Graaf Generator.
I'm old enough to remember when the Sticky Fingers LP was in store racks back in the day. I thought it was so cool that an actual, working zipper was part of the cover. The protective plastic wrap around the LP was completely torn around the zipper area because people couldn't resist zipping and unzipping it. The cover itself had begun to tear from all the "use." I was very young and completely oblivious to the innuendo going on. My mom came over to where I was and I showed her the cover in all my enthusiasm. She was none too pleased... 🤣😂
My mom had that record. She removed the zipper so it wouldn't hurt the other records. I told her if i was her I would have just put it in the front of the stack. It's okay for one to be out of alphabetical order.
I think the Crue - Shout At The Devil alternate cover is an homage to the Beatles, but we would need the Crue to confirm that fact. On that very album they cover Helter Skelter (though that is from a different Beatles album)
I believe they slapped it together quickly because of controversy lol but i think maybe Nikki or one of the members was like what if we paid homage to the Beatles since w have a cover of them
I think it goes without saying that The Beatles Abbey Road cover had the most tributes/parodies of all time. Along with The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s, which Zappa And The Mothers did a complete parody of its entire record sleeve/gatefold a year after The Beatles on We’re Only In It For The Money.
Whipped Cream and Other Delights was one of the first albums I ever bought and also a big reason I started collecting records. There is so many interesting, odd, and great artwork on a bunch of these album covers. Also some of them make really cool display pieces.
Great vid Frank. One of the first ones that came to mind for me is Van Halen's 5150 and Slave album from 1977. Two musclemen trying to hold up that same huge silver ball.
My favourite band Gentle Giant ended their album - the debut one - with the rendition of the British National Anthem. In 1970. 5 years before Queen. Also, there are obvious musical and vague lyrical similarities between the Gentle Giant's 1978's song "Giant For A Day" and Queen's 1991's "I'm Going Slightly Mad". Up to this day I still have no idea whether any members of Queen had ever been aware of the existence of the band Gentle Giant and their works - but still, such are the similarities looking likely like two cases of ripping off. Speaking of album covers, no doubt at all about GG's debut album's cover being a direct answer to the cover of King Crimson's debut album. To an extent, an antagonist rip-off, if you like.
Hotlegs (later became 10cc with the addition of Graham Gouldman) released Thinks: School Stinks in 1971. The cover was an English school desk. Two year later Alice Cooper released Schools Out with a very similar Sleeve artwork.
The Dead Milkmen's album Metaphysical Graffiti is a good parody. It has a cheap toy replica of the LZ cover, and to show that they are deconstructionists, on the back cover, there is a toy building is demolished by a toy wrecking ball attached to toy crane. "Anderson, Walkman, Buttholes, and How!" and " Do the Brown Nose " are standout tracks if you're not one for joke bands. Fun video. Thanks.
Frank, great video. You got the name right for tenament buildings for Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti." That said those buildings are known as "Brownstones" in New York City. The cover of Rancid's "...and out come the wolves." is actually a tribute to Minor Threat's first EP where Ian MacKaye is sitting on a small set of steps with his head on his knees. For Rancid's cover it is Lars Frederiksen doing the exact same pose.
Fun video. For another one, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention's We're Only In It For The Money, I guess satirizes would be the right word here, The Beatles Sgt. Pepper cover.
The Mothers DID get sued over the cover art. That’s why the second run (“We’re Only In It For The Money”), the inside gatefold became the outer cover and vice versa.
There were all sorts of complaints about the cover to Joe's Garage saying Zappa should not be in black face 😜 it was oil and garage was in the title but no Zappa was a racist, probably the least racist guy there is ♠️
@@ackerjawaka1966 honestly, I think the reason why nobody really said anything about “Joe’s Garage” was people knew Zappa wasn’t racist. And besides, most garage repair people do often have grease or oil on their faces at some point.
Getting back to Physical Graffiti, the Rolling Stones video "Waiting For A Friend" opening sequence has Mick Jagger sitting on the steps of that building waiting for Keith Richards to show up...
Hey man. Isn’t there an album that has the same drawing as Grim Reaper’s Fear No Evil, with the grim reaper smashing through a window on a motorcycle? Thanks!!!!
Several years ago, the Rock Hall had a tribute to the Clash. It was incredible to be in the presence of Joe Strummer’s guitar - where I could see every detail of the instrument, just as Joe left it. Plus, in the same space, I could see the remains of the actual destroyed bass from the London Calling cover.
Another good one you could have included is Stormtroopers of Death's "Bigger Than the Devil" album cover, which is a tribute to Iron Maiden's "The Number of The Beast".
Also used on Porn Flakes: Number of the Beef. The rabbit hole for comedy/parody covers is massive and probably should be a separate video. Weird Al would be half the vid.

Australian band 'TISM' have parodied many album covers throughout their career. Their parodies include Dark Room by The Angels, For Those About to Rock by AC/DC, The White Album by The Beatles and pretty much any album cover from Yes.

I know I’ve probably bought these guys up before but there’s a kids band called the imagination movers, and like most kids bands, they have like a country song about brushing your teeth, a rap song about cleaning your room. You know things like that that get kids moving and get kids listening to music. Their background is in like sky and punk, but they dabble in all kinds of genres. They have a song called sock puppet, which has the melody and beef of brass monkey from the Beastie Boys in the middle of it, which is super awesome because my kids know both those songs. And their album licensed to move is a cover that looks just like the Beastie Boys but it’s instead of a real airplane. It’s a paper airplane because kids like paper airplanes.
@@Channel33RPM cool huh? My kids have kind of aged out of imagination movers, but we when we get together with the younger nieces and nephew as well always blast him because those kids don’t wanna hear you know Judas Priest or metallica just yet I’ll play along until they’re ready and when they’re ready, you know, teach them the way
Danzig II - Lucifuge cover, sometimes the back cover, has Glenn close up and the other 3 kinda behind him. It looks exactly like the Doors first album cover. An obvious homage.
Just a few things to say here... Another one that has a similar pose to the Bjork and Britney Spears album is 2pac's "Are You Still Down - Remember Me?" album I assume that Courtney Love did not know the difference between an "Ah ha I won" and an "Oh my ..." expression I think GWAR might have parodied the KISS/Manowar album art Oh yeah - most single and album artwork to "Weird Al" Yankovic albums are parodies - but that is too obvious
The countless black albums. Minor Threat/ Rancid - ...And out come the wolves. I can attest to Sticky Fingers ruining the vinyl. It warped the hell out of mine, had to buy.a reissue with the 2D cover and now I use my old one as art to hang up lol
One of my favourite album covers is physical graffiti and let it be "naked" and the White album.. Pink Floyd had the best covers. Im not just saying that because they are my favourite band. 😉 Korn had brilliant covers. A cover is probably the most important part of any band/musician/book..movie dvd covers etc... This is a great video because there is so many awesome covers from all bands and musicians that are cool to talk about look at. Good video mate. Cheers 👍🏻🎸
Great Video; I actually like the tribute covers. I think it's really nice, & it's sad if the original bands get offended by it. They should feel complimented.
There's a few ripoff of Herb Albert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights... I picked up one from Goodwill called Pat Cooper Spaghetti Sauce and Other Delights.
The Earth Wind and Fire album cover was meant to be a cultural statement and was continuous in four frames inside and out. The Iron Maiden lp, though somewhat similar had a demonic image and edge to it. This is in contrast to the positive spirituality that EWF projects.
I was surprised you didn't mention KISS Alive II in comparison with the Beatle Let it Be. I guess it's because they put the four images on the back instead of the front?
I believe the clash said that since the Elvis record that put rock n roll in to the mainstream had him playing a guitar, then a picture of smashing one would be the death of rock n roll. They wanted London calling to be the last rock record.
*All very funny, I agree you should ask for permission. In media there is so much theft. People steal my vids and music and upload it onto other platforms as there own without even changing the title of the work they stole from me. I like the Herb Albert best, good for Herb*
Elvis/the Clash: Siniestro total, an Spanish humor punk rock band in their single "minha terra galega", with a bagpiper hitting the floor with his bagpipe. Sticky fingers: Accept balls to the wall also looks very much like this one. Also there is a ton of "Sgt. Peppers" parodies
There some weebish albums I can think of right now. Unlucky Morpheus - Rebirth is a direct reference to Angra - Rebirth, same name and everything. Again Unlucky Morpheus - Faith and Warfare is Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare. Last Battalion - Obizen is Meshuggah - Obzen. HMHR Club - Squeal Idol Festival is Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1. Though I guess all of them are more on the parody side
Mother's Of Invention's 1967 (or 1968) We're Only In It For The Money was a parody of (or a rip-off of) The Beatles Sargent Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band cover
I would have said that The Dead Milkmen's Metaphysical Graffiti owes more to Zep's Physical Graffiti. I'm sure that Frank Zappa probably paid for Only In It For The Money's resemblance to Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
David Bowie - Aladin Sane and Steven Wilson solo album to the bone is another example… SW dog is named Bowie. Beatles White Album abd Foo Fighter latest album, another example. Metallica Black Album and ACDC Back in Black…
Check Lady Gaga’s 2009 The Cherrytree Sessions against Missing Persons’ 1982 Spring Session M. Actually, check also Lady Gaga’s outfits with Dale Bozzio’s 1980’s looks
Courtney Love getting offended because someone has homages her album cover seems odd, as if she knows absolutely nothing about the culture or history of rock 'n' roll. Many of the earliest rock 'n' roll records were referencing other records, and rock has been doing variations on the same thing ever since.
Motley Crue's 3rd album Shout at the Devil - At 1st I was going to say Yes it was a coincidence , but then I thought No it wasn't because of The Pentagram , but I'm at yes again because of the song Helter Skelter which of course is The Beatles Song , but I got to be honest with you Frank I LOVE Motley Crue's version over The Beatles version of Helter Skelter any time ever. No offense to you or anyone else that's just my opinion. I Found more GOLD & this Video is it. Way to go Frank !!! 🤘🏻🪙🤘🏻
The Dead Milkmen's Metaphysical Grafitti uses a similar cover to Led Zep's. It is probably a bit of a parody since that seems to be the direction of the band.
great list, I can't say that all of these ones are necessarily famous or not, but Sloppy Seconds Destroyed was another take on that Kiss cover worth checking out, Cecilia und die Sauerkrauts did a variation of that Herb Albert that was pretty entertaining. Chaos Uk short sharp shock and Michelle shocked short sharp shocked are very similar. I'm pretty sure Miley Cyrus cover for plastic hearts is way too similar to the Plasmatics to be coincidence
You realize that record companies have art departments, right? Artists, if they even get a choice in the cover art, choose from various options. Thus, to say one artist “ripped off” another’s album art is pretty silly. The chances that they were aware of the original inspiration for the design is usually slim, parodies excepted.
yes, i'm one of those music addicts which kind people refer to as audiophiles. i'd gladly like to add to your holy list of either blatant and cowardly copies OR respectful and smart homages (you decide): SAGA's "20/20" released in 2012 vs. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's "The 20/20 Experience" released the following year in 2013. personally, i'm voting that both the artwork AND the titles are examples of blatant cowardice on the part of Mr. Timberlake and/or his handlers?
back in the 80’s and 90’s when I always had at least a part-time gig working at an independent music shop, I could have named a few other pairings. Sadly, I can’t think of any more off-hand it will browse through my collection this weekend to see if it jogs my memory. Nice video, btw.
Recent Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here was copied by Metro Boomin's Heroes and Villains album sleeve. Dream Theater's album with the guy on tightrope nicked from Supertramp's ...Famous Last Words...
I like the Beatles one and all these other bands are doing the four boxes but unless the people in the boxes are in the same order like lead singer, lead guitarist, drummer, Beck guitarist then it’s not anything close to being a tribute it’s just coincidence the same thing with Courtney and the Hole cover. Olivia Rodrigo picture looks nothing like that album cover except for that it’s a prom queen with mascara she’s not standing the same way her face in the same way that’s not the same kind of crown nothing like that That’s just Courtney reaching for relevancy

Tove Lo Lady wood
Madonna Like a Prayer
Are
Female versions of Sticky fingers and the Mötley Crüe one ?
Great video! But I'm surprised you omitted Beatles' Sgt. Pepper vs the Stones' "Satanic Majesty's Request..."🤷♂
I apologize if this was already mentioned:
Van Halen's "OU812" is similar to the "Meet the Beatles" album
And Metallica's "Black Album" is also a rip-off of Spinal Tap's "Smell the Glove"
That's cool - I just looked it up.
7:12 Such a fantastic record. Even if yo don’t have it on vinyl it’s a must listen.
Just a few things to say here...
Another one that has a similar pose to the Bjork and Britney Spears album is 2pac's "Are You Still Down - Remember Me?" album
I assume that Courtney Love did not know the difference between an "Ah ha I won" and an "Oh my ..." expression
I think GWAR might have parodied the KISS/Manowar album art
Oh yeah - most single and album artwork to "Weird Al" Yankovic albums are parodies - but that is too obvious
Sloppy Seconds Destroyed album is a parody of the KISS album as well. Better than the Man-O-War one
Demonic? Gimme a break...the Bible speaks of satan and demons also.
Ringo starts Sentimental Journey from 1970 also had a building with people in the windows.
After Awhile, There Is So Much You Can Do With An Album Cover.
The Dead Milkmen- Metaphysical Graffiti for sure.
True
I CONSTANTLY PLAY "SHOUT" AND " THEATER OF PAIN" MY
FAVORITE 2 MOTLEY ALBUMS. AN TO HEAR THEM
"ACTUALLY" SING AND PLAY. US Festival 2 & 3.
Great video Frank!
Very insightful!
Keep up the content - my wife and I always enjoy your videos!
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Awesome! Thank you!
Some of these ideas are just so obvious, its just a matter of who did them first, not if they were ripped off.
Check out The Lashes - Get It album from 2006. Add it to the list of albums that look like The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers.
CCR "Cosmo's Factory" and (honour for that?) a Finnish band Eppu Normaali's album "Akun Tehdas" from year 1980. 😂
The album "the in sound from way out" from Perry Kingsley and the album "the in sound from way out" from the Beastie Boys.
Ween covered laughing Leonard cozens greatest hits album cover
What about the album CYAN by 3 dog night in 1973 same year Aerosmith's debut - Interesting I think
I'll check it out!
Frank Zappa We’re Only in it For The Money & Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
great list, I can't say that all of these ones are necessarily famous or not, but Sloppy Seconds Destroyed was another take on that Kiss cover worth checking out, Cecilia und die Sauerkrauts did a variation of that Herb Albert that was pretty entertaining. Chaos Uk short sharp shock and Michelle shocked short sharp shocked are very similar. I'm pretty sure Miley Cyrus cover for plastic hearts is way too similar to the Plasmatics to be coincidence
No complaints about Beggars Banquet and White Album similarities
zappa’s “we’re only in it for the money” and the sgt. pepper album
You realize that record companies have art departments, right? Artists, if they even get a choice in the cover art, choose from various options. Thus, to say one artist “ripped off” another’s album art is pretty silly. The chances that they were aware of the original inspiration for the design is usually slim, parodies excepted.
Yes, I know how it works... the video and title are all in fun... 😀
Cool. Just had to check. :)
How about a show on FM radio and how it influenced your music tastes and some of us who follow your channel!
Hmmmm... I will give that some thought for sure. As I kid, I was glued to the radio.
@@Channel33RPM that’s why we hear music differently. It was you, the music and the disc jockey!
yes, i'm one of those music addicts which kind people refer to as audiophiles. i'd gladly like to add to your holy list of either blatant and cowardly copies OR respectful and smart homages (you decide): SAGA's "20/20" released in 2012 vs. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's "The 20/20 Experience" released the following year in 2013. personally, i'm voting that both the artwork AND the titles are examples of blatant cowardice on the part of Mr. Timberlake and/or his handlers?
Oh man... I didn't't know about that one, but I just looked it up. I will include it in my follow-up video next month.
back in the 80’s and 90’s when I always had at least a part-time gig working at an independent music shop, I could have named a few other pairings. Sadly, I can’t think of any more off-hand it will browse through my collection this weekend to see if it jogs my memory. Nice video, btw.
Thanks
Recent Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here was copied by Metro Boomin's Heroes and Villains album sleeve. Dream Theater's album with the guy on tightrope nicked from Supertramp's ...Famous Last Words...
I like the Beatles one and all these other bands are doing the four boxes but unless the people in the boxes are in the same order like lead singer, lead guitarist, drummer, Beck guitarist then it’s not anything close to being a tribute it’s just coincidence the same thing with Courtney and the Hole cover.
Olivia Rodrigo picture looks nothing like that album cover except for that it’s a prom queen with mascara she’s not standing the same way her face in the same way that’s not the same kind of crown nothing like that
That’s just Courtney reaching for relevancy
His channel logo looks like jazz queen
Hmmmm.... never thought of that, but I get it.
@@Channel33RPM thanks for replying! Enjoyed the vid btw
