MR2 - Nurburgring Nordschleife (7th lap 20190817)

  • Starting to feel confident in the car and track now, but traffic and roadworks/broken down vehicles do not allow for a clean lap.
    Still, outside of the Kesselchen area (long uphill after Adenau), there's a lot of action in the twisty areas.
    Do you think we can do #Under9 this time?
    Car specs:
    Drivetrain:
    Bone stock engine.
    ZW30 gearbox and Torsen LSD. It has different ratios: taller final, hence why I don't need to shift into 5th, and a closer 1st and 2nd in comparison with the original gearbox.
    Suspension:
    RS*R Ti2000 springs
    KYB Excel-g dampers
    Whiteline rear sway bar
    Poliurethane bushings
    Tires:
    F:195/50R15 Advan AD08RS (new compound to comply with the new EU efficiency ruling). 1.8bar
    R:205/50R15 Advan AD08R. 2.3bar (raised the pressure on the rear slightly 0,2bar compared to the first day, to get a bit of rotation in some areas and worked very nicely)
    Brakes:
    Bone stock replacement parts (rotors, pads and DOT4 fluid). Not even braided brake lines. This setup had been ok at the track until arriving at the Nurburgring. In the previous tracks I've driven the car the speed was never this high, but here this cheap setup was really struggling and had to manage them every lap at the harder braking areas. I wish I had my Winmax pads, as I did on my 86.
    Alignment:
    F: 6deg caster, -1,6ish deg camber, 0.05ish toe in.
    R: - 1,2ish deg camber, 0.15ish toe in.
    Weight:
    Measured 2500lbs/1100kg with me in it and a full tank. Subtract the weight of the spare wheel, jack and toolset which I've removed for the track.

      @@YoShImUrA53 it really does though. especially with the glass top and the helmet. :D. Btw how does the handling compared to the corolla? does it really handles like it's on rails like most people think rear mid ship cars do?

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  4 года назад +17

      @@georgebeard2337 haha you don't corner, as much as you carve through the lines with it when driven near or right under the limit. It's above the limit that the car becomes more challenging and less conventional, and where you need to up your game. Which if you are on top of it, it's very rewarding.
      Driving wise they could not be more apart.
      Just think of the 86 as the actual mid-engined of the two, as it's actually got better weight distribution (52:48 vs 45:55 on the MR2, as measured in both my cars). Then you have polar moment of inertia coupled with engine location, which make their rear-end reactions at the limit, literally opposite. Now consider wheelbase-to-track-width ratios, besides their actual values alone in comparison between both platforms... And you can just grasp how alien they seem to drive compared to the other.
      This is why I love driving both. They both bring and demand opposite ends of driving skill requirements, so they greatly help you become a more complete driver.

    Whatever you did to the suspension, seems to be making it handle more in character with the MkI-a AW11 as opposed to the MkI-b, not to mention you don't seem to be held back too much by the notion of having to actually counter-steer.
    All too often (& rightly so) most drivers won't drive AW11s to the point they start routinely using it's pendulum effect for switchbacks in fear of under correcting too late or overcorrecting too soon, but you seem to be at ease with listening to what the tires & your hips tell you, it shows that you know your car well enough if not as well as the miles of various undulations on that track, with the driving skills to match.
    I'm sure the uphill sections leave you wanting for a little more out of that 4A I'm sure, but she looks rapid everywhere else regardless of how close to factory the power sounds to be.

    • @ChroniclesofKToyoda
      @ChroniclesofKToyoda 3 года назад +2

      @@griffins750 most notably the Mk1-b in most regions don't have a rear sway bar, some (during transition) will still have the tabs to install that system but this for the most part caused more grip in the rear which inversely creates understeer at the front, (Supercharger variants still came equipped with swaybars/(anti)rollbars both front & back like all MK1-a MR2s regardless of year I believe)
      Other suspension changes were also in affect, brakes were larger, notably in the rear on the newer AWs, the suspension, mainly top hats and strut to hub bolts were also different, more bolts from 3 to 4 in the front, different 4 bolt spacing in the rear, if memory serves, and larger hub through bolts respectively

    Great driving. I love your videos.

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  4 года назад +6

      It's completely different, but they are both a ton of fun to drive at the limit. The 4AGE being the only thing they share, which makes it exciting to listen to, and with great response, but not a lot of power.
      The chassis could not be more different. People are usually surprised that the MR2 has poorer weight distribution compared to the 86, so in that regard, the AW11 is more rear-engined than mid-engined.
      Then, you have to consider both the moment of inertia of either, and the suspension type, wheelbase-to-track-width ratio, and then you start realizing why they are opposite to drive at the limit.
      But both bring very different elements to driving, and both complete me as a driver so much more than if I only had one of them. So it's a great challenge to learn and evolve from both platforms. 😃👍🏻

    What are is the aw11 like to drive?? Would it be worth buying?? I’m stuck on the sw20 or the aw11 or even an mx5 mk1! I honestly just love the sound of the 4age but just wanna know I’m getting my bang for my buck! If you have any other ideas I’d love to know! :)

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  3 года назад +2

      Well, if you want bang for buck as far as performance is concerned, you might be looking at the wrong platforms... But as for fun, MX5 NA (also NB) are a milder, more easy on the limit platforms to learn basics of car control. My biggest let down with these vehicles is usually the engines. Not necessarily for their performance (I actually prefer the 1.6 engines and 5 speeds over the 1.8 and 6 speeds in most iterations), but the feel and sounds that the engine gives you when driving them over 7 or 8 tenths.
      SW20, I'm not so familiar with it, but general consensus is that it's a very high performing vehicle on any turbocharged iteration, and milder, less lairy to drive the higher the Rev(ision), handling-wise. But overall more grand tourer and less canyon carver platform than the AW11. Besides, 3SGE is an amazing engine (pity the SW never got the high performing NA versions that the JDM market had, such as the blacktop 3SGE on the Altezza) , but I still don't think it has anything on a 4AGE's character.
      AW11 is more raw and quite easy to drive under 9 tenths, but once you step over there, it's more challenging to keep it together. With advanced skills it's very rewarding to drive, but maybe not ideal either for beginners nor canyon driving, or both, especially if you're not very disciplined understanding the limits of your car and your own skills.
      So, in the end, is it worth it? For me? Absolutely. For you? Idk... Totally depends on your expectations, budget, skills, patience, dedication to understanding its driving quirks, finding parts on an old car... But I could say this of any platform. In the end it's up to you if you decide to jump on this or any other car. My advice is to test drive as many cars as possible, and stay honest with yourself. Try not to be rushed into a compulsive purchase and you will save yourself a lot of headaches and patching up a bad decision for not thinking it over carefully. But then again, don't worry too much. Regardless of what you end up with, once you dig into the insights of platform and start tinkering and playing with it at the track, you're guaranteed to have a great time learning about it. Hope you do well!

      At the same time, check your bushings, tie-rods, alignment, and anything that can make the car's behavior loose or unpredictable.

      Still, I know the 4AGE is slower, but it's responsive and, comparatively, in my absolutely stock spec, it has more low and mid range. Mid range was actually a great ally for some sections of this track, as this stock car was able to cut a few seconds from my cammed 4AGE16v (back in 2014) on my AE86 (identical weight with me on both). @@lmenzol smallports are great aren't they?! I wish mine had one, but instead mine came with the bigport, heavy internals (red-blacktop), and it's the sluggish of all the 4AGEs.
      No, I don't really thik a 6-speed would be a solution, IMO. I don't think it has an issue for a lack of torque spread like the 2zz. Besides, the linkage is completely whack when fitted to an AW11. Amd ultimately, it's heavier than the C5x (5 speed). Also, think about this: any half chance of having the requirement of lifting off the throttle (when shifting) is making you go slower. I really think 5 speed is the way to go with these cars, which have a not-so-huge range of speed (until 200kph/120mph).
