Nurburgring UNDER 9' in a stock MR2??? Nordschleife BTG TIME ATTACK

    This is it. The track finally cleared, and traffic wasn't too bad. But did we make it #Under9?
    Let me know what you think in the comments!
    Car specs:
    Drivetrain:
    Bone stock engine.
    ZW30 gearbox and Torsen LSD. It has different ratios: taller final, hence why I don't need to shift into 5th, and a closer 1st and 2nd in comparison with the original gearbox.
    Suspension:
    RS*R Ti2000 springs
    KYB Excel-g dampers
    Whiteline rear sway bar
    Poliurethane bushings
    Tires:
    F:195/50R15 Advan AD08RS (new compound to comply with the new EU efficiency ruling). 1.8bar
    R:205/50R15 Advan AD08R. 2.3bar (raised the pressure on the rear slightly 0,2bar compared to the first day, to get a bit of rotation in some areas and worked very nicely)
    Brakes:
    Bone stock replacement parts (rotors, pads and DOT4 fluid). Not even braided brake lines. This setup had been ok at the track until arriving at the Nurburgring. In the previous tracks I've driven the car the speed was never this high, but here this cheap setup was really struggling and had to manage them every lap at the harder braking areas. I wish I had my Winmax pads, as I did on my 86.
    Alignment:
    F: 6deg caster, -1,6ish deg camber, 0.05ish toe in.
    R: - 1,2ish deg camber, 0.15ish toe in.
    Weight:
    Measured 2500lbs/1100kg with me in it and a full tank. Subtract the weight of the spare wheel, jack and toolset which I've removed for the track.

      Also, this is just as critical as seat time: invest in suspension maintenance (bushings and tie rods, especially), don't just jump on coil overs. I don't use them... do your proper research, take your time to test drive or ride along on tons of other cars, and make a decission based on your own needs and application. This is key for consistent reactions and predictability.

      @@coltonsaukkola6172 I don't daily it. Mainly because I'm still working on it (slowly but surely), and I've also bought another 87' MR2 for cheap that I also plan on fixing up to standard. However, I can tell you that you most likely won't have any issues daily driving it as long as you maintain it as any other car. Makes sure your suspension is in good condition as well as fluids and etc. Dont drive too crazy, get used to it first, then if you can safely fool around, then go for it to get a feel for the car. No cup holders, so think about that if you plan on having a drink in the car. Space inside the car is decent no matter your height, and luggage capacity is good for two people as long as you don't go crazy (front is smaller than rear trunk, but you could fit a bag or two). Noise could be a slight issue, but if you like music while driving, wear a headphone while driving. You must be in high school like myself (i'm a senior) so don't be afraid to show it off, you're probably the only kid with one in your school anyway. Hola Jorge! Great driving! Why didn’t you go for the 6speed from the 2ZZ? With that change alone I’ve got 4 seconds faster at ascari! We share the love for both the AE86 and AW11 and I reckon the “señor dos” is a whole lot more of a car than the hachiroku!

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  3 года назад +2

      Well, I never thought the stock 4AGE required any more gears. Maybe in a 2zz engine, which has a ridiculously small "on cam" power range, it could be useful. But if your torque is well spread as it's on a stock engine, and you hit the key points of the track between max torque and power, the less you shift gears, the less time you lose between changes,(not even contemplating miss-shift opportunities) so it usually compensates the small gains, depending on track and conditions.
      I've done several tests in a sim I made with all kinds of gearings and being consistent enough (under 2sec differential lap after lap in the same car), and in the Nurburgring in particular, the closest ratios are never the best option.
      It doesn't even bother me the fact that I don't require to shift into 5th the whole lap, because I reach redline from 2nd to 4th in most cases before braking. So that's really as ideal as it can be, IMO =)
      About being much more car, I'm not sure what you mean, but being the same engine in different configurations, it just gives you very different [dynamic or, getting technical, kinematic] feelings with the same powerplant. I just love how each other complete my driving techniques in opposite ways.

    • @sparrow1000
      @sparrow1000 3 года назад

      @@YoShImUrA53 check out my latest video @portimao and see how closely gapped the gears are and how good they fit the stock engine.
      Being more of a car I mean how faster it can be around the track. Of course they feel different at the wheel and the Corolla is more lively and fun. The MR2 is just more efficient around the bends and it’s crazy how soon you can step on the gas exiting every turn. Having the 86 since 2004 and building it for the track I started feeling it’s chassis is very limited. In 2017 I got the MR2 ready for 24h@Ascari and fell in love with it first time at the track.

    Totally awesome. Now is that time 8:50:73 your best track time ever in the Mister Two?
    What’s the best track time ever recorded in any car and what car was it? and if you could, what’s a real respectable time? I realize the car, engine, mods make a huge difference but what’s a time that would make a driver respectable to the other drivers?

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  3 года назад

      Thanks, dude. Well, in my opinion anything below 9 minutes is a respectable fast time. But it's a complete package kinda deal. Gping under 9 min with less than a 100hp per tonne is quite tough, even with good tires, suspension and aero package, which all come into place as the complete package I mentioned.
      I believe the lap record was recently chased down by a Le Mans car and is in the high 5min mark, but don't quote me on that. Up until very recent the record was set in the 80s by the late Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 or 962. 6:32 was the time iirc. There's some footage but not the full lap somewhere on RUclips. The fastest I've ever been at this track was with my AE86 lapping under 9min to tye full trackrather than judt BTG as usual on Touristenfahrten days

      Hey Henning, thanks!😃
      I used to run 195/50R15 on all four corners, with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 rubber. I was a fan of that square (not staggered) size for the road, as I never had understeer. I swapped for 205 in the rear to have more rear grip in high speed corners at the track. With 195 at the rear, at the track I had high speed oversteer, which was manageable as it was predictable, but slowed me down. Check my Castelloli MR2 onboards (turn 3, particularly) to see this.
      As for the Michelin they are the best wet tire I've ever had. You can see how I overtake race cars and much more powerful and fast cars in my Calafat wet onboards as well.
      As for semi slicks (AKA R compounds) or other more extreme performance tires, I'm not very keen, as this is my daily driver, and I want to have a relative degree of comfort and usability. Also, I don't think a Targa top is ideal to use with very high grip, as the chassis is a bit soft because of this, and already is having to work hard with the Neovas, which are more than enough grip for my needs and still being able to have fun with the car. ☺️✌🏻

      @@randomtoyotadude8952 Thanks again, but I'm not sure I'm 100% right, as tires are very personal! =D I'm only right because we probably have similar appreciations on tires. =) The best tire will always be the one that matches your own style of driving. And yes, of course there will be shades of grey and some will objectively perform better than others, but since feel is important (to me, at least), it's also a personal thing to have the best tires for you, which you can get the most from, than the fastest tires that you are not confident with and won't be able to push them as hard, consistently.
      I was a great fan of the Michelin PS3s, but I've seen that many people hate on them. I will agree, they're not the best when the weather or asphalt is too warm, as they tend to overheat and lose grip suddenly when they overheat. But then again, since I drive a slow car, I don't get them that hot, or into too much trouble if they lose a bit of performance until I cool them a bit. I can live with that and still think they're a great all rounder, especially since they last a lot!
      Since I don't do that many km these days, I went ahead and tried the Neovas, in order to maximize treadlife, before being forced to replace the Michelins out of (old) age. =)

Yes, even the older 185/60 R14 size that used to be the standard sport-ish size for small cars (for this size there are a few semi-slicks, though), such as the stock size for the MR2, and many others, is just lacking in sport tires.
      Aunque he de decir que el coche es fácilmente al menos un puñado de segundos más rápido de lo que se ve aquí. Achácaselo a mis manoplas, que no le sé sacar todo el partido en todas las curvas, y también a un par de puntos de tráfico que me han hecho perder algo de tiempo.

      Me pasa en las onboard de Nür que noto, sobretodo en la parte después del Karussell, quién sabe fluir y jugar con el agarre y el peso (algo en lo que me ayudó mucho pasar de un delantera a un trasera, pero me considero manoplas también) y quien se limita a tirarlo y que "sea lo que Dios quiera".
      Está claro que con tan diferentes planteamientos es imposible que reaccionen igual pero es gracioso como en ciertas zonas, viendo el vídeo, sí que lo parece. (Probablemente al volante se sientan cosas totalmente diferentes en uno y en otro).
      Realmente era un comentario desde el punto de vista de un fan de los AW11 que ha oído y leído mil historias de terror sobre ellos pero que nunca ha tenido la ocasión de sentar su culo en uno (me ofrezco voluntario).

      @YoShImUrA53  10 месяцев назад +1

      I don't have an oil temperature gauge to know. But the water gauge never moved a bit. Then again, with 13l, even if oil was at 400C, I doubt it would make "much" of a difference with the [small] surface of the water-oil heat exchanger.
      I would really like to put a sensor before and after the oil-water heat exchanger system to see how effective it is, and make a graph at different temperatures to check its better range of efficiency.
      I'm fully aware of the high oil temperature on all 4AGEs, but maybe not as evident on stock engines, as this one is.
      I'm pretty sure I've ran the engine much hotter on a summer's day going up a mountain than driving at over 120kph as you do at the Ring nearly at every moment during a lap.

    Have you ever driven an AW11 with a 3SGTE swap? If so, what do you think of it compared to the stock engine?

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  2 месяца назад

      Hiya. I'll say first of all I haven't tested one. I've been a passenger on a highly modified SW20 with circa 400hp 3SGTE.
      Against my own action of swapping the 16v to the 20v engine on my 86, I'm not a fan of swaps, overall. They are a path into the unknown of shifting the overall balance of a car, that needs to be engineered back in if you want to get anywhere with any driving proficiency... Or sometimes, even safety.
      I do appreciate it if it's at least kept under the same brand (an "interracial" swap is a hole different can of worms I won't open). I'd also appreciate if it's a minimal shift in weight balance, CoG, and absolutely no interference to the suspension geometry, unless it's all properly engineered... At which point, how much do you have left of the original car, anyway??
      The 3SGTE is a very capable engine, but I'm not a huge fan of turbo setups in general. Response and NA sounds are primordial for my enjoyment at hard driving.
      Having that very powerful, but twitchy (boost build up) engine, paired with a very sensitive chassis, as the AW is, I don't think is a setup I'd be comfortable wringing about confidently at a place like the Nurburgring, for instance.
      That doesn't take the fact that it would make it very quick on a straight line. But just as any cartbox on wheels you could strap the 3S to... But you'd miss all the subtleties and quirks of driving the AW, IMO.

    I want to know about the decision of adding an upgraded rear sway bar. I am currently in the process of improving my 20V AW11's handling for a time trail series I am racing in. There has been a lot of debate about the rear sway bar, whether to keep the stock one, remove it, or get an upgraded one. People have different feelings about what to do. What was the result of upgrading the rear sway bar for you?

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  2 года назад

      Well, as you say it's a personal requirement. I never had a need to upgrade the front one, for instance.
      In my particular case, after fitting the ZW30's 5-speed with the Torsen LSD that comes in stock in all but the US-spec MR-S, I found that I had quite a bit of inner-rear-wheel traction loss due to roll. As with any change, it affected other areas which I had to fine tune now.
      I figured by making it a bit more flat-cornering in the rear, I could reduce that effect. I'm happy to report it worked great for me, and also made the car a bit more tight when cornering fast. But after this change I realized I required a wider rear tire as well, as I was having too much rotation in corners at high speed. Which, if you look at the weight bias (the reason why you should have staggered tire widths, and only that), makes total sense.
      After upgrading from 195 all round to 205 in the rear, and playing a bit with tire pressures, I think I really got the car where I wanted.
      Makes you realize how premeditated and careful your changes have to be to achieve the goal of total balance in your setup.

    • @zerohikari2685
      @zerohikari2685 2 года назад

      @@YoShImUrA53 Thank you for the response. Why didn't you try to increase your rear camber to compensate for your lack of inner wheel traction or add stiffer rear springs? I understand based on your set up your camber might already be maxed out but I thought I would ask.
      I am currently try to optimize rear traction when on the throttle. My turn in is great but I can't hit the accelerator as early as I'd like. That should be a clear advantage of the MR layout over FR but atm feels lacking. (I have a LSD, 225s in the rear but still have this issue)

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53  2 года назад

      @@zerohikari2685 well, if you read your own text you can realize the reasoning behind your problem. Your rear spring rate is probably too high.
      The reason why I used a sway bar rather than the spring rate is you don't really require an increase in spring rate, with all the negative consequences that it induces in so many other parts of the setup, compared to a less drastic change. Less changes mean less things to compensate for. Sway bars don't affect longitudinally, let alone the kinematic's compliance over uneven surfaces,
      Camber is changed for static (i.e. mid-corner) cornering conditions, and only with regards to the way you use the tire. Also, regarding rear camber, you add negative camber also to dampen the breakaway reactions, rather than only try to gain more grip. If it helps, I run very little more negative rear camber than the OEM specs. Around -1.3, -1.4 deg, iirc.
      Personally, unless you have a waaay over powered drivetrain, you're probably also sertiously misusing that wide tire. Remember the concept of pressure per sq cm (or inch, if you work on Imperial). I wish I could actually run 185 F and 195 R instead, but my rim width (and my own attachment to it) and lack of real options in 185 prevent me from going.this way.

    • @zerohikari2685
      @zerohikari2685 2 года назад

      @YoShImUrA53 Thanks again.
      I understand the consequences of harder rear springs but I am looking for other ways to offset it.
      Your explanation of why you chose a rear sway bar makes sense. Not sure if it will help my situation installing one based on your feedback.
      I currently run 1.5 camber in the rear but am probably going to bump it to 3. I think this is probably the best way to attack the issue for now.
      My aw11 puts down 135whp. I found last year that my 205s were not enough to keep traction. That's why I upgraded to 225s.
      Thanks again so much for your feedback. It is actually very difficult to find someone to talk about aw11 suspension tuning, most people just want to talk about how to K-swap their car.
