Having cattle as the illicit cargo they are smuggling is actually a brilliant bit of writing. On frontier worlds that are just being settled, there are few things that could ever be more valuable than cows. And it sort of ties these two episodes together nicely.
Some of the best "face acting" of any show ever. Simon's face after Mal says,"You're on my crew-why we still talking about this? Chows in ten no need to dress." just one example. All the actors involved have some great facial reactions to things that have just been said or done...Zoey when Badger mentions that the "loot" is government stamped (in "Serenity")...just to name a couple...they were all amazing; as is the show. They were all perfectly cast as are all the supporting cast and guest stars. One of the best shows EVER! Enjoying your reactions tremendously.
Badger saying “‘Course you couldn’t buy an invite with a diamond the size of a testicle, but I got my hands on a couple.” is one of the best subtle self-owns in the show when Jayne and Mal start snickering.
In Russian, "got my hands on" expression doesn't exist. So, when translating this into Russian, I replaced it with "you can't buy an invite for a diamond the size of a boob - but I've just got a couple".
I kinda like how both of these episodes ended. Shindig with Kaylee in her bunk, listening to classical music - pining for the life that Inara turned away from. And Safe, the diner table scene where River stole a roll off Jayne's plate, like a little sister would to tease her big brother. While these episodes might not be everyone's favorites, they're great character development stories...
River stealing Jayne's bread roll might have a deeper meaning as if to say she knows he stole from her brother and her and she's stealing something back in retaliation.
When he said that to her, I was like “Just admit that you two love each other and make some babies already” God, could you imagine what happen if that was revealed in later seasons had the show continued?
In "Safe", did you notice during the crew dinner scene River stole bread from Jayne's plate? And Jayne just accepted it and got another piece from the basket?
Regarding Shepherd Book: In "The Count of Monte Cristo", Edmond Dantes is befriended at the prison Chateau d'If by an old man, Abbe Faria. Abbe Faria had been a _soldier_ , until one day he was ordered to burn a church with the mercenaries who'd gone there for sanctuary inside. He did so... and his conscience compelled him to desert the army and become a priest, devoting himself to God. Shepherd Book reminds me a lot of Abbe Faria, and I always imagined his backstory was very similar.
Fun note: Abbe Faria was a real guy. His place in Monte Cristo was fictionalized, but he was real. He was the first person to suggest that hypnotism / suggestion was a mental thing, and not magic.
A lot of people find Simon and River's closeness weird but I'd say recognizing he's much older than her and their parents are kind of implied to have dropped the ball makes it a lot easier to process. In a sense he's not only her older brother, he's also kind of a father figure to her.
Close to what you're saying, I always thought their parents where distant and cold, so the two of them learned to look after each other, surrogating the roles their parents should do sometimes, hence River forcing Simon to eat, like a mother would.
People who didn’t grow up in loving and affectionate families have a hard time understanding people that did. My husband’s family is rather cold and distant, whereas mine is very tight-knit and loving. He still gets uncomfortable sometimes, and we’ve been together for 10 years.
I think also that while River is a super genius, she seems to be mentally/emotionally younger than her actual age and in some ways still has that childhood innocence where you're yet to realise that feeding someone by hand may carry romantic implications. You wouldn't think twice if it was a 6 year old feeding his/her family member, I think that's where River's mentality is too.
Too bad Weadon had no interest in continuing the story. As serenity made clear. He took the fans good will and money it brang then killed the story so he could leverage more money

Yeah, the first few episodes are more "universe building" and an introduction to the characters. But the next 5 episodes are (in my opinion) some of the best in the entire series, and mark the point where this show had me really hooked.
My theory on Sheppard is that he was the general who ordered the Bombing of Serenity Valley, in the pilot episode. Then after that massacre he retired in a convent. The day he came out, he was looking for a ship and there it was SERENITY. A sing from gods, that's why he join the the crew.

River taking apart Badger is probably my favorite scene in all of Firefly. But both episodes show River at her best, and show "that ain't no preacher". The movie shows you what I believe the Preacherman's story was.
The thing about Simon & River is that a) River is severely mentally damaged and often doesn't act her age because of it, and b) more importantly, Simon isn't just her brother in the series- he's her acting parent, full-time physician, and part-time bodyguard. She's extremely traumatized & entirely dependent on him, especially in the first 8 or 9 episodes. Also I'm surprised there was no reaction to any of the flashback scenes- they're the best part of the episode. And fun fact! The reason the guns make the "pew pew" noise instead of a normal gunshot is because they don't use gunpowder, they use some futuristic liquid compound instead.
After the holidays you might want to watch "Arsenic and old Lace" a 1944 classic with Cary Grant. You would appreciate the comedy aspect of it or "Harvey". It was a favorite film Jimmy Stewart according to an interview he did.

relating to Book's past... Not really a spoiler since it was never said in the show or movie: Readers learn in the 2010 comic "Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale" that Book was an Independent fighter who joined the Alliance before the war began, to serve as a mole. He moved quickly through the ranks and was known for his single goal: to end the war by whatever means possible. He was discharged from the Alliance in 2498 after an operation he oversaw resulted in a massive ambush and the deaths of 4,000 people; the Alliance covered up the incident. Book later found religion and became a wandering preacher.
Y'all should watch Tucker & Dale vs. Evil for a Halloween movie. It has Wash in it. The TV show Chuck has Adam Baldwin "Jayne" as a main cast member. In one episode River makes an appearance. My wife and I have a theory about why the Alliance rendard aide Shepherd Book. We think he was at one time a special operative before a became a Shepherd. He became a man of God after doing things that did not sit well with his conscience. A lot of Knights turned to the cloth after fighting during the crusades.
15:05 -- RE: The Melding of Old World with Sci Fi New World(s); A: Yep, and TBH I think Joss Whedon probably took a lot of inspiration from Japan's "Cowboy Bebop" short TV series plus the film, all released in the previous decade to "Firefly". Cowboy Bebop has 5 characters (including a non-talking Corgi), Whedon expanded the concept with a larger cast for the crew but otherwise, much of the same problems. Bebop is straight up Jazz as a soundtrack for the Old World. Firefly is the driving folk rhythms of the Old World. It's a lot like the "Fistful of Dollars is Actually Yojimbo" thing with a twist, since Yojimbo was itself inspired by 1930s-era pulp fiction depictions of hard-bitten cynical private detectives and the gunslingers who had preceded them.

He may not say it but he clearly is always looking out for what's best.
I'd have to go with a machete. It's easy to miss with a pistol, and in a duel you're supposed to only get one ball or bullet. But with a machete, you don't need to know how to sword fight, and you won't run out of ammo
"Looks like we got here just in time. What's that make us?"

You guys are adorable ❤️
My wife and I have a theory about why the Alliance rendard aide Shepherd Book. We think he was at one time a special operative before a became a Shepherd. He became a man of God after doing things that did not sit well with his conscience. A lot of Knights turned to the cloth after fighting during the crusades.
She was just Jelly at the start lol
Haven't watched the video yet but I loved it.
Edit: now I've watched it, opinion unchanged.
Weapon of choice in Firefly? Same as today; .300 blackout AR pistol. =P
“At the park...like...a month ago...I did about...10. Remember that?”
😒 “No.”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you like western with a little bit of Sci-fi I bet you would enjoy the Adventures of Brisco County Jr., the first TV show Carlton Cuse created.
Good commercial placement on your channel. Much appreciated.
Haha. Not sure if honest or sarcasm. 🤠
@@YouMeTheMovies Totally honest and sincere. The breaks are placed at logical points, not randomly interrupting things.
@@TommygunNG well awesome. First time I’ve gotten a compliment on ads. 😂
@@YouMeTheMovies Most channels let them be random. I have to presume you make an effort to set them. (If you don't, just stay quiet and ride with the compliment. :D )
My weapon of choice is that thing that got clamped onto James Bond's arm in that alien movie.
26:14 OH SHIT! I've fed my children grapes like that = Weird & Perverted? Damn 😲
For people who watched this in the original airing, this was the first time they saw Badger.
Wow... the way she went at him about being "cheesy"... granted i'm a very sensitive person but that would have really hurt me if someone did that to me. He seemed a little hurt too, but I don't know him so maybe he didn't care... still..
My weapon of choice: cutting remarks
May I recommend to any fan the Titan Novels of Firefly.
Love the way you two are doing your review.i love the show so don't mind not that it's just clips ,but you have picked all best ones out
Weapon of choice would be an M4 with NV and all the assorted kit.
"Shindig" allowed "Kaylee" to shine at a party, "Inara" to refuse a Neanderthal's proposal, and "Mal" to show off his street fighter skills.
"Safe" allowed Summer Glau to show off her dance/ballet skills, Shepherd Book's past counts, and religious fundamentalists see a Witch.
Single shot pistol. Fire it in the air, let for them to hit a non vital area most likely. Charge them down and beat them with said pistol
Joss made Jewel Staite, the Girl that plays Kaylee, Gain 40 pounds and keep it on for the run of the series. You can see her at her regular weight in the TV series Wonderfalls. I really like her much better with some meat on her.
Morena looked so great in this ep.
I always liked Zoe's Mare's Leg...
Swords. I think fast but my eyes are shot.
staplers at two paces lol
She can river dance.lol
Big Damn Heroes.
The late great Ron Glass is awesome! They never get to Sheppard Book's back story in the series, or the movie but they flush it out thoroughly in the comics. (COMICS SPOILER)... Stop reading if you want to read the comics!
Spie for the independents that worked his way up the ranks in the Alliance to be "disgraced" as he sent a bunch of Alliance troops to a spectacular defeat at the hands of the Brown coats. Then quietly retired to the Abby.
Weapon of choice would be an M4 with NV and all the assorted
Mal will insult Anara's profession but he will never insult Anara herself. That's a huge thing with Mal. He will poke fun at you for all the time or call what you are doing stupid but always thinkins highly of his crew on a personal level. Even the new members. He may not say it but he clearly is always looking out for what's best.
Best weapon, always the shotgun. It is truly a very versatile weapon. Especially onboard a ship! ;-}}
I like corn.
I'd have to go with a machete. It's easy to miss with a pistol, and in a duel you're supposed to only get one ball or bullet. But with a machete, you don't need to know how to sword fight, and you won't run out of ammo
We should bring back dueling. Swords, pistols (smoothbore), sticks, and fists.
Sometimes you just have to fight it out.
Might help to rid the world of a few million hotheads... maybe even reduce wars.
I duel with my wits ;)
I can use a sword but I'd prefer sticks. Obviously, if everyone else has a gun, I want a cannon.
Also while River is physically 17. She has been mentally stunted. So mentally she's a lot younger.
My weapon of choice is ............................"A SPECIFIC CREW MEMBER".
