Crazy idea time: With Disney working on purchasing a large portion of Fox, could they bring Firefly back? Or has the Serenity flown off into the galactic sunset for good?
Nathan Fillion probably pushed for most if not all of these, seeing as he legit loved Firefly and has said before it broke his heart when the show ended. He even admits that he never got over it personally. His true love for the character of Mal and the setting really came off in his performance though, and it's a big part of why Firefly is still so loved today. The show felt so believable in big part thanks to Fillion.
The writers of Castle know that he brought a fan base with him, so what better way to reward those fans than a few references to the show that introduced us to an amazing actor.
The Dork Knight More than a few references. Castle's whole skill set is based on Malcolm Reynold. At season one, he demonstrated that he's a sharpshooter. At season 3, he spoke some chinese. At season 6, he said he's very good at sword which Mal learned in his duel with Wing. He also brought Mal's somewhat jolly personality into Castle. If only they could've brought Morena Baccarin to play his ex-girlfriend in A Rose for Everafter. That would've been perfect.
Works the other way around as well. I watched Castle before I watched Firefly, and people pointing out Firefly references on Castle is what made me watch Firefly.
The moment when Castle comes out with the costume and his daughter say "dont you think you should move on?" that just tore me up inside...FIREFLY WAS PERFECTION PERSONIFIED, dont you tell me to move on.
Technically, he doesn't, true. It's just the way he does it that hints at self-awareness, I think. It's not hugely clear exactly where he's looking when you see it for the first time anyway.
wimpylassiter2336 He does both. It's set up so that Richard Castle is looking at Alexis, but Nathan Fillion is looking at the camera. It's metahumor :)
I miss you Firefly! I swear when I watched the halloween episode of Castle and I saw Nathan putting on his 'space cowboy' costume I was flailing like an idiot and Screaming "It's Mal!"

I was watching it with my father and as soon as I saw those pants and that color on his shirt I started shrieking "It's MAL! He's wearing the costume! Oh my god! I LOVE Nathan Fillion!" My father was rolling his eyes and laughing at me, he knew of my deep and faithful love for Firefly and all it's actors.

The Halloween episode where he dresses up as Mal again, was actually the first episode of Castle I saw. I feel to this day that it drew me into that series more than anything.
I remember now that was his costume on firefly man i was young. I was 13 when that show was on and i didnt remeber nathan fillon as that guy from firefly until just recently. Or the firestorm of wtf from fans when it got canceled.
Not a big gamer but a friends kid was playing a GTA style game and one of the pistols was Deckard's gun from from Blade Runner and another one was Captain Mal's. I was pointing it out to the oblivious kid praising the reference of such icon pieces, totally blank stairs I'm in my sixties but never felt so damn old.
Many people would miss these references to Firefly unless they were hard core fans of the show. I picked them all up straight away only because I have all 14 episodes burned in my memory forever along with the Serenity movie.
I love how he does two fingers on each hand for the two by two hands of blue reference! I would of liked more of Firefly but at least it died a hero and didnt live long enough to see itself become the villian.
There are so many more: - his reaction in the pilot when Kate handcuffs him to the car (same reaction to seeing River inside the box); - the episode where an actress from a sci-fi show kills the main actor so she can leave for another show, and when arrested protests that the cops don't know what it is like to be remembered just for some sci-fi show (and Castle makes that "I feel your pain" look); - the party where the Mayor tells Castle "This is a mighty fine shindig" or some such; - episodes with Jayne Cobb... I mean Adam Baldwin...
" the episode where an actress from a sci-fi show kills the main actor so she can leave for another show, " This is the only one? :) Well, that actress' name was Frye (Stephanie), the captain of the fictional ship was Max Reynard, the first mate was one lt. Chloe, they fought the cannibalistic race of Kreavers, and of course "that Joss Whedon show" and "it aired only 12 episode vefore being cancelled".
It's also a bit hard to notice with the fuzzy compression but in the Space Cowboy scene, at just below waist height on our left, the "catalyzer" from Out of Gas (and Ariel) is sitting on the shelf. When he steps forward he stands in front of it, though.
I love that this video didn't need the referenced 'Firefly' clips. If you're a 'Firefly' fan, you've seen them all enough times to have them committed to memory. :-)
I had myself a really crap day when the space cowboy part of this episode came up. I just lost my mind. One of my best tv moments ever. Thank you, Nathan. There are a million and a half views for this video! I can't pinpoint exactly what makes Firefly as amazing as it is, but I am so very glad that I'm not alone in seeing it's perfection
Then later there was the episode that took place at a sci-fi convention when he lists a bunch of old shows and how they canceled "that really good one."
As a huge fan of the Serenity/Firefly universe, these references make me smile when I catch them. I don't need them to be in the show but that they are makes me happy in that sci-fi portion of my soul. The excellent writing and acting of the Castle show is what keeps me coming back.
Just finished Firefly. I always saw it and wanted to watch it. I'm glad I did now :) very sad they killed off this series. serenity brings closure. Ending with River being the pilot. They left it perfect for a return. The cast is still alive. They should bring it back!!
+RunnerGunner I wish they do.. Firefly was awesome!. I've actually watched many of the episodes multiple times. I always feel that they should have continued the series!.. I saw Serenity but didn't get the same feel as Firefly.. And the firefly references in castle are quite funny.. My favorite is I was aiming for his head!! :) :)
Gee, there's another show that takes place in the future that Fox seems to have this issue with. They won't give us any GOOD NEWS EVERYONE regarding it.
Those last two were priceless! When that last episode aired, I was laughing my ass like a lunatic off in a room full of people that never saw Firefly. It was awesome!
Hard to comprehend the sense behind cancelling a show that was actually being watched & enjoyed by so many. After watching the first season and thinking Joss Whedon was a genius, I wanted to break something when I found out it had been pulled. Tragic.
It actually wasn't being watched by very many, because Fox was airing its episodes out of order and apparently time slotted it in such a way that sports matches would shove it up or cancel it. It wasn't until the DVD release where it really caught on, because people could finally watch it regularly and in order thus knowing what the hell was going on.
OOZ662 Not sure where you live, but here in Australia, I'm pretty sure we got it late, but in order. I can understand the lack of interest if it was shown out of order.
gupsnot Sorry, being American I forget the rest of the world exists sometimes. The original FOX air order was as follows (chronologically first at the top, last at the bottom): #2 "The Train Job" #3 "Bushwhacked" #6 "Our Mrs. Reynolds" #7 "Jaynestown" #8 "Out of Gas" #4 "Shindig" #5 "Safe" #9 "Ariel" #10 "War Stories" #14 "Objects in Space" #1 "Serenity" Unaired: #11 "Trash" #12 "The Message" #13 "Heart of Gold"
OOZ662 typical of fox at the time. They just started to attack Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre shows and forced a few of the shows in their stable to either be canceled or to find greener pastures on other networks.
I was just talking about the character-type he's always reminded me of; I've always wanted him to play Hal Jordan, but have always thought of Han Solo when I see bits of Firefly (never watched the show). I have compared GL Hal Jordan in the Animated Series to Jim Kirk before. So even though I've never thought of Fillion as a Kirk type at all, I can see where people could be coming from, since all 3 characters have similarities.
Thank you so much for making this! I've been watching Castle for years but only finally watched Firefly recently, so a lot of these I haven't seen since watching it. Brilliant.

There have been many more references over the 6 seasons, including episodes with other Firefly actors (Adam Baldwin and Gina Torres), but these are some of my favorites. There's also references in the Richard Castle books (Heat Wave, Naked Heat, Heat Rises, Frozen Heat, Deadly Heat). For example, one of the more obvious ones: Detective Nicki Heat (based on Beckett) borrows some detectives from burglary to help with a case. Jameson Rook (based on Castle) comments that there's something he likes about these two guys. Their names? Detective Malcolm and Detective Reynolds.
The "Space Cowboy" and "TV show I used to love" brought tears to my eye, you can tell that he really misses the show. I hope these rumors of another Firefly season are true!!
OK folks since I have a patient, who seems to watch Castle every blessed second of the day LOL...I'm now kind of hooked on the show as well, and seeing these references to Nathan's other show...hmmm sounds good so maybe I ought to check it out *smile*. And for the record? Nathan is downright freaking adorable!!
If you love sci-fi as I do... *cough cough* you'll love Firefly. It's not all brawns and space battles, either, but a show encompassing very smart character-building. I thoroughly recommend it.
GAH! This both made me giggle like a fangirl and made my heart break at the same time. Fox really dropped the ball when they cancelled this nugget of brilliance. But they didn't kill it. After all, you can't stop the signal. ;)
He'd never get over the fact that it's canceled, would he? I mean, come on, Nathan Fillion references Firefly every chance he gets, he even did it on Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters once, though I'm not sure people noticed that...
Well, a point to notice is that it's not Nathan who makes the call. He has told in several panels and interviews that it's the writers, they are in the script.
jacqueline Wolffe No need for apologies :) The show writers knew that a lot of Fillion fans are huge Firefly fans and so they keep referring to Firefly. I'm sure it has attracted people to watch Castle :)
Seppo Kepponen It kept me watching castle. Usually don't watch cop dramas like that, but Castle is interesting enough thankfully. The Firefly quotes just made me love it even more, as I actually found most of these as I was watching.
In the ep. 4x21 Headhunters, Castle meets det. Slaughter, an episodic character played by Adam Baldwin. In order to be able to shadow him, Castle bribes him with a brown coat. :)
Watched Castle because of Nathan Fillion, one of my very favourite actors (and he's Canadian!! :) ). There are tons more subtle references to Firefly in the show than this too. And "shiny" is said several times by Castle himself. If I'm not mistaken, he even directly mentions Firefly (or maybe Beckett does) in the episode where he finds out Beckett loved an old geeky space show that used to play long ago, and that she dressed up as one of the characters.
It actually hurt when she said: "don't you think you should move on?"
Neo Should've slapped her!
Neo I feel you.
Neo NO WE CANT MOVE ON WE WANT SERENITY BACK!
Neo
Quite brilliant how it's not really directed to Castle. It was directed at the viewers. And yes, it hurts.
I can't move on.
Don't worry I don't think fillion will move on ever, and let's be thankful for that ;)
I love that ABC does a better job supporting Firefly than FOX ever will.

So it seems like you 2 are the ones that didn't read a comment correctly, but it's entirely possible the reason you guys are against Dylan here went over my head and I could be entirely off. Not trying to fight here, just trying to point something out.
Glowyrm No I think you're the one who read into it a bit too much. Dylan made a mistake and my face palm was more of comedic thing. You know, because face palms are a part of comedies more than anything else. I think if anyone is being a smart arse it's you.
The Halloween episode where he dresses up as Mal again, was actually the first episode of Castle I saw. I feel to this day that it drew me into that series more than anything.
People who haven't watched firefly must have been confused about some of these. Especially the space cowboy gag.
Especially that one.
I have never seen Firefly but I got the space cowboy gag right away.
Many people would miss these references to Firefly unless they were hard core fans of the show. I picked them all up straight away only because I have all 14 episodes burned in my memory forever along with the Serenity movie.
apart from the last bit
Same!
2:47
in firefly there were cows in space ^^
And in jars :)
Whoever caught two by two hands of blue was a genious.!!!
I love how he does two fingers on each hand for the two by two hands of blue reference! I would of liked more of Firefly but at least it died a hero and didnt live long enough to see itself become the villian.
There are so many more:
- his reaction in the pilot when Kate handcuffs him to the car (same reaction to seeing River inside the box);
- the episode where an actress from a sci-fi show kills the main actor so she can leave for another show, and when arrested protests that the cops don't know what it is like to be remembered just for some sci-fi show (and Castle makes that "I feel your pain" look);
- the party where the Mayor tells Castle "This is a mighty fine shindig" or some such;
- episodes with Jayne Cobb... I mean Adam Baldwin...
" the episode where an actress from a sci-fi show kills the main actor so she can leave for another show, "
This is the only one?
I can't pinpoint exactly what makes Firefly as amazing as it is, but I am so very glad that I'm not alone in seeing it's perfection
this video was the greatest thing to happen to me since captain mal kicked that guy into the Serenity's engine intake
Then later there was the episode that took place at a sci-fi convention when he lists a bunch of old shows and how they canceled "that really good one."
***** He can't let it go :-) Even when he played Hermes in the second Percy Jackson film he males a similar reference.
You, my browncoated friend, are a true fan.
Don't forget the fact that almost every coat he owns is brown and he tends to like to wear a red dress shirt under them a lot haha it's awesome
Malcolm is always a part of him
As a huge fan of the Serenity/Firefly universe, these references make me smile when I catch them. I don't need them to be in the show but that they are makes me happy in that sci-fi portion of my soul. The excellent writing and acting of the Castle show is what keeps me coming back.
the hands of blue one is awesome
"Tv-show I used to love..."!
Best!
But he didn't say "Gorram" during it.
I miss Firefly. F*** you FOX. ;-;
Two by Two, Hands of Blue, get ready Fox they will come for you.
Firefly was one of the greatest shows in history, cancelling it so soon was almost as epic a mistake as cancelling Star Trek early
It still haunts the network to this day, from what I've heard.
And not cancelling New Trek at all.
Just finished Firefly. I always saw it and wanted to watch it. I'm glad I did now :) very sad they killed off this series. serenity brings closure. Ending with River being the pilot. They left it perfect for a return. The cast is still alive. They should bring it back!!
Only problem is that the cast may not want to do it anymore.
Ummm.. Wash guys!!! one of the best characters on the show.
RunnerGunner mostly still alive
Those last two were priceless! When that last episode aired, I was laughing my ass like a lunatic off in a room full of people that never saw Firefly. It was awesome!
Firefly never should have been canceled.
Well it seems we now know that nathan kept his captains uniform. :D
I can understand the lack of interest if it was shown out of order.
gupsnot
Sorry, being American I forget the rest of the world exists sometimes. The original FOX air order was as follows (chronologically first at the top, last at the bottom):
#2 "The Train Job"
#3 "Bushwhacked"
#6 "Our Mrs. Reynolds"
#7 "Jaynestown"
#8 "Out of Gas"
#4 "Shindig"
#5 "Safe"
#9 "Ariel"
#10 "War Stories"
#14 "Objects in Space"
#1 "Serenity"
Unaired:
#11 "Trash"
#12 "The Message"
#13 "Heart of Gold"
OOZ662 typical of fox at the time. They just started to attack Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre shows and forced a few of the shows in their stable to either be canceled or to find greener pastures on other networks.
OOZ662
will "OMG" suffice here? That's totally insane .
Omg... I've been watching castle for awhile and just got into firefly... I get it all now!!!!
Lucas Johnston Welcome new Browncoat.
I literally just finished watching Firefly!
darkflames80 Me too.
Same
+darkflames80 Just finished? Didn't you know that if you watch all the episodes on repeat, it never gets old?
TheBetterGame Partial ADD here. I usually wait a year or two before re-watching a series.
Nathan Fillion could have been the next captain kirk.........
I always thought of him as more of a Han Solo...... or Hal Jordan. Of course, all 3 are cut from the same cloth, so I guess we're all in agreement. :D
Agreed. God damn it. D:
feenix219 Nah. He can only be one. Anyone else, I feel people would feel affronted by that and take it as an insult to the series.
I was just talking about the character-type he's always reminded me of; I've always wanted him to play Hal Jordan, but have always thought of Han Solo when I see bits of Firefly (never watched the show). I have compared GL Hal Jordan in the Animated Series to Jim Kirk before. So even though I've never thought of Fillion as a Kirk type at all, I can see where people could be coming from, since all 3 characters have similarities.
feenix219 He played Hal Jordan. Well, he voiced him anyway.
BRILLIANT!!! I may start watching Castle.
That is the exact reason I started watching Castle. Glad I did, love it.
@Stuart exactly what I was thinking ^^
Thank you so much for making this! I've been watching Castle for years but only finally watched Firefly recently, so a lot of these I haven't seen since watching it. Brilliant.
Intruder:"BRING IT BACK FOX!!" *slams Fox's executive head into desk*
Fox Exe: "Please, your not making any.." *slams Fox's executive head into desk twice more*
Intruder:"Coming in clearer now?"
Fox Exe:"Please my family... I"
Intruder:"At-least release the rights, if you don't want it maybe someone else will pick it up"
"You know what I reckon?"
Fox:"Ar"*slams Fox's executive head into desk again*
Intruder:"I reckon, I reckon you took something of a slight to my good nature." "I reckon, you don made it personal." "I reckon your going to squeeze all the last drops out of what you got, with out for filling your part of the bargain."
Fox Exe:"I Don't kNow WhAtt yOu're talKING aboUt!?"
Intruder:"average of 4.7 million viewers. 11 shows released, fourteen produced!" "Now tell me.... why make 14 but show 11, why oh why....
*Fox quivers in his plush leather reclining, massaging, built-in-sound-systeming chair*
Fox Exe:" Oh GOD... you're... YOU'RE ONE OF THEMM!!"
*Fox Exe cry's in terror: "You're a FAN!!"
Intruder: "It seems we have established a dialogue." *intruder tips their hat, cracks a knowing smile*:
"Shiney"
If everybody in the world stopped watching all FOX channels for one week do you think they will get the message?
junior602002 No, they would try to make something new, but they wouldn't bring it back unless it was spcifically instructed that the channel would lose intrest UNLESS it was brought back.
Last one is so subtly awesome.
"Didn't you wear that like five years ago? Don't you think you should move on?"
My god! I love how in your face the last two are! It's almost breaking the fourth wall!
I started watching firefly yesterday. I'm stretching it out as long as possible so i can put off the ending :(
if you get to the ending, move on to the movie, then after that, re-watch EVERYTHING! lol
Haha good plan!
read the comics after the movie
Dannick Bonneau Then play the board game.
the board game continue the story?
This video deserves an update. Needs to include their barely-disguised Firefly tribute episode.
remind me the name of the episode please
The Final Frontier. Season 5, episode 6.
romxxii
Is that the one where their at that convention?
Eugene Ratana Yeah, the one that had Jonathan Frakes and Armin Shimerman.
When he says "Space Cowboy" does the music at that moment remind anyone else of the Firefly theme?
Should i point out the "five years ago" comeback as being part of the refference ? :p
What year did that scene happen? I've always vaguely thought of Castle as being recent.
AlexanderRM1000 It was the first or second season.
when he looks at the camera at the serenity reference the guitar reminds me a bit too, its a stretch but still
Absolutely I'm glad someone else noticed. But it was just a steel guitar lick not part of the ballad of serenity :)
I've been on a huge Firefly/Serenity kick the past couple of weeks... seems to happen at least twice a year. This is awesome! Thank you!
The "Space Cowboy" and "TV show I used to love" brought tears to my eye, you can tell that he really misses the show. I hope these rumors of another Firefly season are true!!
Me too
What rumors? Where did that come from?! *breathes* must not get excited.... *breathes*
The last two were the best God I miss that show
I was going to write the same thing, but I'll add the energy to yours.
The best by FAR. :) Brilliant those two. "Don't you think it's time you moved on?" Oh, but only if it were that easy...
I swear FireFly will make a comeback and it will be hard on those TV Business Peoples Faces.
Darth Sidious
"thoroughly", "highly",...or any other recomending word.
Go see it! It's the most amasing show EVER!
at first i thought the hands of blue was a bit of a stretch, but then i noticed what he did with his hands after he put them on.
"didn't you wear that like...5 years ago?" "SO!!" priceless!!
I hope this goes down as one of Fox's biggest mistakes next to cancelling Family Guy.
Oh my God, the Halloween costume thing made me die.
That is amazing!!! Maybe I should start watching Castle:)
"TV show I used to love" I'm sad now. :.
Watching this compilation in late 2019 is still too soon.
Holy cow this was posted 8 years ago and I just barely saw it today
when you can't run, you walk.
when you can't walk, you crawl.
and when you can't crawl...
RIP Ron Glass AKA Sheppard of Firefly. That said, have fun with Castle, its a really great show.
GAH! This both made me giggle like a fangirl and made my heart break at the same time. Fox really dropped the ball when they cancelled this nugget of brilliance. But they didn't kill it. After all, you can't stop the signal. ;)
I love the second last one
There is only one word to say about that clip: Shiny ^^
I died inside when she said "Don't you think you should move on?", isn't that the cold hard truth :'(
"TV show I used to love" was by far my favorite bit of this video. Thanks for sharing it!
Ahhhh!! I got a nerdgasm from watching these. Then a sort of bitter aftertaste started creeping in after the video ended. :/
I'm not really in a position where I can watch such things regularly, so forgive for not knowing.
jacqueline Wolffe
No need for apologies :) The show writers knew that a lot of Fillion fans are huge Firefly fans and so they keep referring to Firefly. I'm sure it has attracted people to watch Castle :)
I did, best part of that movie.
Seppo Kepponen It kept me watching castle. Usually don't watch cop dramas like that, but Castle is interesting enough thankfully. The Firefly quotes just made me love it even more, as I actually found most of these as I was watching.
The "Space Cowboy" clip was the best. My reaction: "THAT'S MY MAL!"
Thanks for the refresher of how great those references were.
Thanks for uploading! Brought a smile to my face!
I thought it was odd when the mother brings up that question he looks at the camera with that look saying really?
In the ep. 4x21 Headhunters, Castle meets det. Slaughter, an episodic character played by Adam Baldwin. In order to be able to shadow him, Castle bribes him with a brown coat. :)
nearly cried when i first saw the episode with the browncoat.
can't stop the signal!
Miss Firefly.. Doubt it'll ever come back. Still, got the one and only season DVDs & the awesome follow-up movie to watch.... Silver linings.
space cowboy will always be my favorite.
"Don't you think you should move on?"
HELL NO!
That "2 by 2, hands of blue" gesture was so great because it was so subtle.
holy shit this made me incredibly happy. Especially that last one.
