39:26 flour is VERY flammable. If enough flour dust is in the air it is the equivalent of a gas leak. In a mill they are basically grinding the flour down all day.
The bridge that inspired the story is still there. Of course it looks nothing like it did back then. There is a cemetery with names on the gravestones that are in the story. Van Tassel, etc.
I absolutely love this movie. This is my favorite Tim Burton film. I love the setting, the performances, the atmosphere of the film; it was all amazing. But my favorite part of the movie is Danny Elfman's magnificent score. I was in my third year in the Navy when this came out and saw it twice at the movies.
In the original story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane is an awkward school teacher who is basically scared of his own shadow. He has a crush on Katrina Van Tassel, but also wants her money. Brom Bones is also in love with Katrina, so he uses the story of the Headless Horseman to scare Ichabod. Legend has it that the horseman was a soldier who had his head shot off by a cannonball. Also, there's a bridge that he's rumored not to be able to cross. One night, Ichabod is chased by the Headless Horseman, he makes it across the bridge, but when he looks back, he sees the horseman throw his head at him. Ichabod is never seen around that area again, and at the bridge, they find a shattered pumpkin. It's strongly implied that Brom was pretending to be the horseman to scare Ichabod away so he could have Katrina all to himself.
Let's see here...Captain Jack Sparrow,Darth Maul and Johnny Rico(Starship Troopers). Now,there's a blink, and you missed it scene when the Headless Horseman breaks into a house to kill a man and his wife and you see a little boy hiding under the bed...The Headless Horseman comes out of the house and you can see that he has 3 heads😮...Damm,people always just gloss over that.

Interesting facts about Sleepy Hollow (1999) (1) Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, the horse that played Gunpowder, Ichabod Crane's horse in this film, when he heard it was going to be put down. (2) Johnny Depp initially found the idea of Christina Ricci being his love interest in this film to be rather odd, seeing as he's known her since she was nine years old. They first met on the set of Mermaids (1990), as Depp was dating Winona Ryder at the time. (3) Johnny Depp says that he has never seen most of his own movies. In this case, he avoids the film because he hates the way he acts in it. (4) (At around 57 minutes) At the start of filming the three-way axe battle with Ray Park, Johnny Depp, and Casper Van Dien, Van Dien broke the index finger of his left hand. Although it was extremely painful, he carried on without telling anyone, as he didn't want his part cut short. (5) Christina Ricci revealed on The Rosie O'Donnell Show (1996) that Christopher Walken was very shy and quiet so the other cast members had a competition over who could get him to say the most words. Miranda Richardson won by making him answer lots of questions.
this is one of my all time favorite Tim Burton films I used to watch this movie on VHS all the time when I was a little kid Christina Ricci oh my lord I used to daydream that she was my girlfriend in this movie lol...
As a life long resident of the Hudson Valley I have to correct you. Sleepy Hollow isn’t in the New England. It’s the Hudson Valley. The hospital I was born in is directly across the river from Sleepy Hollow and can be seen from its windows. I’ve been to the church from the story as it still stands to this day.
The closest thing to a Hammer film directed by Burton (it has Christopher Lee & Michael Gough to underscore that sentiment). Beyond atmospheric and well-executed & Walken is beyond creepy as the Hessian from Hell.
The casting it´s awesome: Johnny Depp (many well known roles) Christina Ricci (Mermaids, Casper, Wednesday Addams in The Addams, etc.) Christopher Walken (The deer hunter, Pulp Fiction, etc.) Sir Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter) Casper Van Dien (Ricco in Starship Troopers) Ian Mcdiarmid (The Emperor in Star Wars) Christopher Lee (Saruman in LOTR, Count Dooku in Star Wars, Dracula, etc.) Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon in Harry Potter) Jeffrey Jones (Beettlejuice, Amadeus, etc.)
" they filmed it in reverse", i too love the idea that they filmed that scene by having Christopher Walken remove his literal head, filmed it, then reversed the footage so it would be more believable and realistic...cause if we saw Walken literally reclaiming his missing head, people wouldn't find it believable this is how to film an adaptation as well as a remake...there is just enough of the book and cartoon, a good amount of references without being excessive, and enough original story, approved by fans of both sources, not just a straight up remake, and with enough originality to be it's own story and stand on it's own merit
I'd love to see a sequel where Mr. Masbeth is now grown up and with his bravery, has become something of a monster hunter with Ichabod as his mentor. Nice original storytelling.
This is Burton's most beautifully made film. Yes, I'm biased. The "town" was actually built. When production ended, the village was dismantled, with the exception of the church. The locals liked it so much, they kept it.
I like how this adaptation combines supernatural elements, mystery and skepticism based investigation alongside sheer horror. All while keeping to the legend of the Horseman and his end as Hessian in the Revolutionary War. Great film with Burton's typical gloomy atmosphere.
Man I remember when this came out I was around 6 years old. It creeped me out lol my older sister loved it. I was literally just thinking about this movie the other day.
I don't think there's another movie out there that physically and aesthetically embodies Fall and Halloween quite like this movie. I love it so, so, SO much. I want to live in Sleepy Hollow, without the supernatural Horsemen, of course.

Actually Ichabod's fate is unknown in the original story and it's highly likely he just fled in fear after being tricked by his love rival. You can use flour as an explosive, it's an Delta Force technique.
I find it interesting that in the book, Ichabod Crane thought he was safe when he crossed the bridge but the Headless Horseman threw a pumpkin at him and fell. Then all that was left was his hat and a smashed pumpkin and he was never seen again. Presumed to be unalived. Katrina married Brom, who from what it looked like revealed to be the headless horseman to get rid of Ichabod by using the legend of The Headless Horseman.
What caused the explosion... when flour is hanging as dust in the air it will explode if flame is applied, especially in an enclosed space. It's due to large surface area being available to ignite and can happen with many powders.
Fun fact the actor playing the Horseman when he is headless is stuntman and actor Ray Park best known for playing Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace and Solo, Toad in the First X Men Movie and Snake Eyes in the GI Joe Movies
This definitely was an homage to the Hammer Horror movies. The gothic mood, the mystery, the adjusted characters. Heck, there's even a few Hammer Horror vets, including a former Dracula and a former Alfred Pennyworth. I loved this movie since i saw it in theaters, before i really knew Hammer Horror.
Flour is actually highly flammable, flour dust hanging in the air will explode if ignited ! so the windmill exploding is pretty accurate.
Sugar dust is the same. Probably even more so since it has more caloric energy per part. I recall at least one processing plant blowing up from the accumulated dust + an accidental spark or flame.
Yes.
