    Jeremy Mayfield ran a short track car in his final race with Team Penske. Chassis 10/Ford was run at Martinsville, Richmond, Rockingham, Loudon, Dover, & Bristol for those races in 2001 prior to running again at Kansas. That same chassis finished 2nd three times in 2000 at Charlotte, Homestead, & Phoenix. It also raced at Dover & Rockingham as well in the fall of 2000.

      Jeff rarely did burnouts after his 97-98 dominant seasons. He would just have a cool down lap and had a “act like you’ve been there before” attitude after winning. He did more during his final years, since he regained his form and more traditional fans who were once anti-Gordon appeared to finally appreciate him for the all time great he was during his career.

    People complain about the racing today...this is horrible. No one can pass. If Elliott didn't have a dog motor, he would have dominated. That car carried so much corner speed compared to Rusty, but could not do a thing. If he would have aggressively side draft like they do today, he maybe could have passed Rusty

  • @grungyflannel
    @grungyflannel 3 года назад +2

    It looked like newman was trying to hold up the cars immediately behind him on those last 2 restarts so rusty could get a jump on em, great teamwork....i dont know what happened between those two, but shame they couldnt play nice for very long.

    • @jesseemullen
      @jesseemullen 2 года назад

      I think Rusty was used to being the number one driver and when Newman came along and started winning, it made him look like he was over the hill (Rusty was never as fast after 2001)

    • @grungyflannel
      @grungyflannel 2 года назад

      @@jesseemullen agreed...2002 on a lot of the veterans started to struggle, Rusty, Jarrett, Elliott, Martin, the Labonte's even Gordon. The changes to the aero and the tires really affected them more than the younger guys..which is understandable. you go back and watch races from the previous era and the cars moved all over the place, the springs, tires, shocks were setup vastly different. You needed an entirely different feel to the car to be succesful and those guys didnt have it. Gordon had enough time to adjust and have another succesful run, and Mark Martin stuck around long enough to figure it out. Rusty's last year was pretty good, but a lot of the old stars faded out around the mid 2000s

    • @christophermillsap5064
      @christophermillsap5064 4 месяца назад

      If Atwood won at Homestead, he may have gotten back in Evernham’s good graces and possibly drive the 19 car for another season. But yeah, Atwood was a flat out bust in NASCAR. So much hype and he never delivered.
