Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630 Review

  • Chromebooks are in an identity crisis. They aren’t the small, cheap laptops they used to be. These days, Chromebooks come in all shapes and sizes, and some even pack premium hardware.
On example is the Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630. Starting at $540 and featuring a quad-core Intel Core processor, it’s serious competition for similarly priced Windows 10 notebooks. There’s even a 4K model in the works. Can this Chromebook be your only laptop?
The Yoga Chromebook C630 is the perfect middle ground between premium and affordable. At $540 (or even for the $700 Best Buy option), there aren’t many Windows 10 laptops we’d recommend, making a Chromebook like this one a very solid alternative. It’s not the flashiest Chrome OS device we’ve used, but with performance at the top of its class and impressive build quality to boot, it’s one of the easiest to recommend.
    Is there a better alternative?
There isn’t a Windows 10 laptop anywhere near this price that compares in build quality, performance, and battery life. The only one that comes nearest is the Acer Aspire E 15, though you won’t get near the portability, both in battery life and chassis size. There are a couple of serious competitors in the Chromebook space, however. The Acer Chromebook Spin 15 is a bit cheaper than the Yoga Chromebook, though it has a slower processor and weaker build quality. The closest competitor is the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1, which matches the Yoga in just about every spec, including price. It doesn’t, however, offer a more powerful Core i5 version, though the built-in stylus slot is a plus.
    How long will it last?
This is a futureproofed laptop. Its 8th-gen processor will last you for years before it gets sluggish. Meanwhile, the port selection has enough USB-A and USB-C to manage the transition of peripherals. The one-year warranty isn’t great, but it’s become the industry standard.
    Should you buy it?
Yes. If you’re looking for a premium-feeling Chromebook -- or even just an affordable laptop -- the Yoga Chromebook is a fantastic option.

This Chromebook is on my list for 2019. I would consider a 4K display, but I would have to check the HD display side by side to make my decision. I just bought a Lenovo Chromebook S330 for $129.00 during the Walmart Black Friday event and I'm very impressed. The build quality is great and the MediaTek processor is fast enough for what I do. The screen is not great, but it's very usable. Even at its regular price, it's a good buy.

I'm using the 2016 Thinkpad 13" Chromebook which not that many people know about. It's plain looking but solid and with a great, spacious keyboard.

Lenovo using the c630 name twice in this manner is crazy. One c630 is a 15.6 Chromebook, the other a 13.3 Windows on Snapdragon laptop. I have the latter, but I actually wish they would make a version of the 13.3 Snapdragon/LTE chassis with ChromeOS. That would at least make sense as far as reusing the c630 name. The ARM Chromebooks are disappearing at the same time the ARM chips are getting fast enough to run heavier OSes like Windows 10.

I have to admit I'm smitten with this Chromebook. I always assumed a 15.6" device was just way too big for me, until I realized I use my Chromebook 99% of the time in my own home. I'm really curious to see the 4K version (and it's price).

I've been waiting for the 4K version of this laptop for months, refreshing the Lenovo website and Best Buy's website for about that same amount of time. I am in grad school and want the big screen and high resolution to enable better split screen multitasking for the many papers I have to write! I also believe it will be futureproofed for years to come! I have the Toshiba Chromebook 2 for years that I have really enjoyed... but the screen is getting a little small for my old eyes :-/ 🧐

Why do these reviews always add some line about being better off with Windows? Most of us who have already used Chrome OS have no interest in Windows. Ever. Again. Seriously. There is zero reason for any normal person to ever buy or use windows. Ever.

It's hard to call it a powerhouse without a bakcklit keyboard. But sure, yeah, an i5 with 8gb of ram should get you where you need to go. Nvm chrome os, we're talking about linux, which generally has less impact on memory.
    But without backlit keys...

Acer does-- Acer Chromebook Spin 13. Keep in mind it's a 3:2 aspect ratio at 13.5" in size, but it's 2256 x 1504 (something like that) and VERY bright. I saw this Lenovo on display at Best Buy and while 1080p IPS is great, it's probably around 250-275 nits, where as the Acer Spin competes with the Pixelbook which is rated at just over 400 nits. Not sure how it applies to this Lenovo, but keep in mind the Acer has the same processor, but the cooling on it is pretty bad, causing the fan to spin up A LOT and LOUD. I ended up returning mine because of it. I'm waiting until CES next month in anticipation of the new Asus Chromebooks, or the rumored "Atlas" device which is probably the Pixelbook 2 with a 4K display and slimmer bezels. Just hope that Google can work with Netflix, Amazon (lol) and VUDU to work out this bullshit DRM stuff so that all these platforms that have 4K can stream AND download 4K content. SO many hurdles to jump over to just stream 1080p content as is in ChromeOS, and downloads and Android apps ONLY stream/download in 480p! Defeats the purpose of these great screens.

@@PinkAmadeus Yup, that's a fanless chip, and it's also the one in the top tier pixelbook. So it's super speedy in a really light form factor, except not nearly as light and comfortable to hold, what with that awkward bottom chin.
That's also ddr3 ram, whereas my x360 has 8ddr4(2400), and a u-series processor, not the lower voltage y series.
I'd say both are pretty beastly in their own right.
