I’ve been quitting social media for 3.5 months now. And the reason i chose to quit because i felt like social media has changed my personality. I realized i’ve become more judgmental and ungrateful for what i have and who i am. It was because social media exposed me with other people’s “online” life that seemed to be a perfect life. This triggered me to always compare my life with others. I am a hundred percent agree that social media makes us seek for social validation ultimately. We tend to post something happy and beautiful in order to get as many likes as we can. So that we become popular among our friends or peers. Thankfully, after 3.5 months quitting social media, i can feel some changes in myself. I can focus more on myself without worrying people judge me, i feel more content with my life, and i am happier than ever before. Last but not least, quitting social media enables me to spend quality time with my loved ones because i got no distractions. Sooo for people who are still caught up in social media, you should consider about it ;) God bless, and have a nice day!

@C M thanks! I actually improved A LOT since I last commented here. One thing that helped me is I created a new account and only followed people that really matters in my life. I only have 17friends in that personal/private account. So what happened is I no longer see posts from toxic people and I don't get bombarded by nonsense posts in my feed because I only have a few friends. I also followed pages that only matter in my life, those that help me. So since I only see a few posts in my feed, I no longer spend so much time scrolling because the posts are not many. My original accounts in FB and IG were all deactivated so I only use my personal ones hehe. That worked for me so far. I am only chatting with my family and real friends so I also no longer receive chain messages and chats from unnecessary people xD I am still in my journey to fully go digital minimalism but I have improved so much. I hope everyone's journey are good too!

"Social media is a symptom not a tactic." Meaning the really successful "influencers" were mostly already in successful positions before their social medias amplified it, or they at least had something they were passionate about and then used it to share with the world. Too often we're trying to "prove" we have good lives, while not really believing it ourselves. I think the main difference between successful and unsuccessful social media users is that the former knows they have good lives and shares it with others, while the latter is trying to convince themselves more than anyone.

I think quitting a smartphone and switching over to a basic phone hits different. That was what my experience had been when my smartphone broke and I had my exams the coming month, so I resisted getting a new phone and had to switch to a basic nokia phone just for urgent calls. I felt much much more at peace during those times, my insomnia was gone, and sleep routine was automatically fixed to early to bed - early to rise, i felt more energetic and more productive as I did not waste any time on my phone, and I was mentally stable with no anxiety or anything even during my exams. It went on for almost 2 months and then I bought a new smartphone and then life was back with anxiety, to sleeping late, and unproductive days wasting time switching between apps and scrolling and chatting and ultimately it becomes a vicious circle. I still feel like I should go back to my nokia phone but can't actually do that.

Watch "pink drunk tank" speech and maybe you will realize that "those things " are many things but nothing that is designed to help you. In fact social media is the first stage of priming you for listening to the outside source which tells you what to do next, what to buy, so that when AI becomes widespread you and other would buy what some bot r a robot maybe will suggest you. You're supposed to follow the crowd, do what the group would do, ovework yurself and overspend to have to overwork again without asking questions why things are the way they are. If this is your definition of "amusing yourself to death" than yes, this is what this all is really about. Internet is nobody's friend. It never was. It was born as a military tech and it remains what it has always been- a tool to manipulate, control, tool used for surrveillance, control of information etc. It never was a toy and it never will be. You want a harmless toy? Buy a boardgame.

Recently I took a GRE timed test practice and I realised I couldn't be still past 30mins to an hour. I began craving WhatsApp status updates... had to pause and check if I had new messages.. I used to read a book every two days years ago but I have only completed 2 books in the last 2years. I'm not sure where to start the fast from.

Reclaim my time! Yes ma’am! I’ve been off fb for about a week which is no sweat for me to do. I have less than 100 friends on fb because I don’t like friending people who I don’t know and I will drop friends if they are negative. NOW RUclips and Instagram are a beast for me It’s becoming a serious addiction.

So much truth in your speech. I am taking steps to spend less time online and be more present. It is very addictive and a lot of time can be wasted without even realizing.

I am so proud of you Amber! I enjoyed this Ted Talk! You are a smart and lovely young woman. I love your dress and your hair is gorgeous!
I agree, social media does need to be regulated in our personal lives. I am permanently off of Instagram and Facebook. I would love to ax Twitter, and keep my RUclips channel. I grew up in a time that was on the cusp of using technology at home. I see the value of using technology, but not allowing it to control our lives is key!

Good talk. As long as these platforms have algorithms that addict and manipulate there is a good reason to abstain. Watch the talks of Tristan Harris and Jaron Lanier to gain a fuller insight into the problem and why deleting your accounts is the best course of action.

After watching this video, I changed my mind about social media. I delete followers from my account on instagram and I started to not check the likes or the people who share it. It's not healthy be comparing all the time, we can't be ourselves! Sometimes, we have to disconnect from the world to find ourselves.

What a wise and beautiful young woman! I hope I can be like her someday. Honestly, we don’t need social around 24/7. I only have Instagram and RUclips now. I don’t have the Instagram app on my phone and discipline myself to only browse youtube after lunch and after dinner. Quitting social media really is much more productive and distressing.

I decided to quit Instagram because I actually feel is killing my brain, the hours and hours of scrolling, mindlessly watching reels and posts. My grades are dropping, I feel myself loosing confidence, can't focus on the other million things I like, the amount of time of my life wasted just scrolling and scrolling that at the end of the day it made me felt worse. I remember doing so well at school in comparison to college and the only thing I didn't have back then was this amount of apps that just make you waste your time and almost makes you feel like a zombie in front of a screen.
So yeah, I decided to quit social media too and this video really helped me to do it once and for all, thank you.

I use social medias like search engines ,to find career related groups , during my college time I used this strategy to get simplified notes ..etc..it helped me in many ways ...in my opinion it's up to who is using or how you are handling social media ,, don't let someone else life style to trigger your ego,, just be aware about the negative side and use it wisely ..

I think the woman has a good vision of the social media; we can spend a lot of time on internet and forgot about the world, I’m agreeing with her.
But when she start to explain the weakness from social media, some of them are valid to people whose haven’t self-confidence or depend of them , for example, when talk about the social validation or social outthinking, is more for people who depend of the like or think that the social media bring them the true confidence.

It is great to enjoy moments and keep them sacred without sharing EVERYTHING! I've always thought of social media as smoke and mirrors. Read a story about a lady who posted a vacation to Disney world. The comments were hilarious but she admitted to editing all of them, she never left her living room ......

I wish there were more studies on social medias in which the profile is anonymous (Tumblr, for example). I think that for the larger part critiques of social medias are in therms of "you compare yourself to others" but what about social medias in which people upload little to no personal information? Those too have issues (the pro-ana stuff for example) and we should acknowledge that

    • @160p2GHz

If anonymous I find I become obsessive about keeping it anonymous. It causes me stress on reddit to not give away who I am irl even though I don't do anything super strange or shady or mean there.

Thats why I delete FB then instagram and Twitter later. Its been like 4 months and suddenly I felt FREE. FREE to be who i am. FREE to take some time for MY life instead of watching others. I FELT LITERALLY SO FREE THAT I COULD FLY. Social media has created a New kind of depression and kids are the first victims
