Tiny, portable, prefab cube shelters in medieval French town

- They're just 3 meters (9.8 feet) by 3 meters and just about as high. They'd make great tiny homes, but these portable cube prefabs- they can be moved on a flatbed (in 2 parts) and dropped anywhere with a forklift- are being used across France as rural hotels.
Carré d'étoiles translates to "box of stars" and this vacation prefab was designed for stargazing, with a large domed skylight just feet above the lofted bed.
It's less than 100 square feet, but it sleeps four (platform and sofa beds) and includes a kitchen with stove, sink and refridgerator, sitting area, a bathroom, a shower, plus storage and shelving.
They're not cheap, but the 30,900 euro (~$40,000) price tag, includes all transport to the site and marketing (since it's assumed they'll be used as vacation rentals).
In this video, Caroline of the Carrés d'étoiles de la Paleine, France shows us the three cubes she has installed on the premises of her home/chateau/hotel in the medieval village of Puy-Notre-Dame (in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional park).

A quick apology to those subscribers who have seen this video already. I uploaded it again because of it was being blocked in Germany.
I'll be removing the 1st version, but I've copied all of your comments and put them in the text above... though feel free to repeat your comments. I apologize for the inconvenience.
I would like to buy the plans for this cubed house. We have some homeless students in our school and I would like to propose this idea to house the students. Is there any way one could get in contact with the builder.
Such a nice little cozy place.
These remind me of the little cottages we use too rent at a ski resort in Quebec. It has everything you need for quiet relaxation. Notice no phone, tv, computer.
Cook, some wine, read a book by the fire and fall asleep under the stars.
Perfect!
Anjou....the name of my favorite pear 🍐😊
I really like the wall cabinet in the kitchen although I can't quite figure out how the door works. Lots of great ideas!
Hey, I just discovered another one of your great videos! Wow, really impressed the usage of space. Love the placement of that kitchen, shower and toilet wall (my toilet might be at the end tho' ..lol). Tiny house solutions are great, because you can incorporate what you like in one, to be used in another. Knee issues so stairs won't do, but a horizontal murphy bed with couch attached would. I am saving this one.
I'm just discovering this video. And here I thought I'd seen all your work. This was a very compact design. I like it.
Me too, four years after you!
Wonderful concept for a hotel!! Every city should have some. This would make a great tiny home too!
I'm inspired to build a tiny home myself here in the US. This is incredibly inspiring! Beautiful workmanship! I love it :-)
I like the versatile furnishings-dual/triple purpose sliding cabinet/mirror over sink, the chair/coffee table with under seat storage, the skylight of course.
I love how you have optimised the space! good space saving furniture and the skylight feature is something from my dream home!
@relaxshacksDOTcom Thanks Deek. It was just a fun stop on a roadtrip through France after a friend's wedding. Actually felt kind of out of context to find this woman with a very old chateau and then these 5 cubes in her backyard, plus a circus caravan for rent.
I love this house but the again I love France so I am not so sure which is attracting me most. Good idea and I like the round windows but these houses don't have to be expensive build your own.
Me too!! Love the simplicity and the bucolics!!🌎
This brings tears(of joy) to my eyes... this house is really pretty.... =)
I would love to build a house similar to this with a different interior using aa 3.5m x 3.5m and a 14 foot roof so there's a 7 foot clearence upstairs and down
That Cube is adorable! It would make neat guest cabins at the lake-House.
She just gave us all a great idea of how we can make one ourselves! But use whatever wood we want from whatever country we live in! It's a great idea;something to put on your own property to watch the stars and feel like your camping but more comphy.I'd make it bigger so two double beds could be up on the loft for a couple of children to experience it with you. A little fun thing to do as a family! Ireland has some pretty fine wood as well!
Those were my thoughts too and I'm already putting the plans together. These cubes were at a self build expo here in the UK a couple of yrs ago, they're great but damn expensive, so if you are creative and have some time to spend, you can source everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) online :)
I could see myself living in a small house like that. Everything is well planned. Thanks for sharing. :)
These are gorgeous! I love them!
Loved it, very compact but very useful. I would spend a weekend, maybe great as cabin or a low cost hotel rooms by the beach. One could even have a canopy on the porch, for great shade and have a small grill.
Wow I love this concept. Im a fan of the minimalist style
Clever shelf/mirror combo there.
that is just simply amazing....great space inside....
very inspiring.... beautiful design. kitchen was perfect
Excellent and beautiful design
!
i love the sky window
If the roof can be slid off easily, it would be even better to viewing the stars in the Summer. Also, the toilet and shower can be combined for greater space when functioning as either. Other than that, it's pretty awesome.
These are so cute...!
Wow nice simple design...
love love your design, and love
thanks a lot ... i know saw that i didnt finish what i was about to say so i just want to say that it is really nice
magnifique, merci beaucoup.
Wow, that is a beautiful and simple place to live in! I wish I had one of those, then I wouldn't have to worry too much about paying a huge electric bill ^__^
this is very nice. it would make a grate beach house!
Very beautiful
This is wonderful. If it were towable with a lower roof height I could see living in it FT as a tiny home on wheels. The only thing I would change is the ladder. As you get older you have to consider safety. Boxy stairs with a railing for me.
I ove this- so well planned
i really love it!
That's so funny, when I used to upload videos they would ALWAYS be blocked in Germany :D Cool video, I would see myself living in one of those for a year in a forest...
Soooooo Awesome!
that's a cute play house.
The fireplace is placed on the outer wall, right beside the door, its kind of unefficient that way. Even though the walls are insulated enough, a lot of heat escapes or gets trapped.
It's perfect!
beautiful
The price is way overboard. You're paying for the architect's vision. Many of these tiny homes overblown prices remind me of how we all now pay for bottled water which used to be free. Although housing was never free, it was never so "precious" either. Anyone with a certain amount of skill in building could construct a tiny cabin like this for a few hundred bucks.
Yes too much at $40K but no way you could make it for a few hundred dollars!! More like a several thousand at least, maybe more... a young man here in the US did build one similar but even so he was using reclaimed materials and it still cost him $1500 and the place had no plumbing whatsoever!!
It could be built under 7500 I bet
7/26/18.....Cute little CUBE house like a tree house but on the ground.
Being retired, I would have trouble with climbing the ladder to the loft bed....& my dog wouldn't likr sleeping alone in the bottom floor.
But very interesting plan/idea.
Magnifique.
If a house or apartment looked like this and was 3 times bigger, I'd live in it permanently
I think in the US you could have three or four of these for the price of one in France.
I like the design for such a small space.
Love these I cud live in 1 of these in a quiet park.
That is a great, small house, but most people will not pay that price. There is a 1992 38' motor home selling locally here in the US for $9,000, with more space (queen bed, full bath with tub, washer and dryer room, combo kitchen and living room with a slide out), and mobility to boot. That leaves $31,000 in a bank account. That makes more sense to me.
i so love this....thnx
cool idea
Good idea.
Something like this could sure take care of the homeless situation in the US
C'est bonne petit mansion!
What a great use of space. There were many years I could have used a place like this one. I do have one question. There needs a place to hang clothes and storage a few items.
I wanna live there!
C'est manifique, et beaucoup plus grand et deluxe de beaucoup des apartemants a Paris!!!
Vive La Provence!
Merci.
awshmazing!!!!
I could totally see myself living in that
Personally I would have the window on the roof open up and I would have a patio on top of it, that would be cool.
It's in the text.
that intro song sounds good
Would it be possible to do such[no need for fire place lol] in a 2mx2m? Even using lets say smaller utilities?
Tres genial
reminds me of a club house i once had as a kid.
wonderful video.
But I wonder if the U.S. could make something like this but more affordable?
Nice concept and design, reminds me of a summer pad somewhere in the pacific northwest.
Great idea! I just may do that someday! I live in Co. Mayo Ireland. Where in the UK do you live?
I live in central England, nearest city is Lichfield :)
I would be willing to live in that.
thank you for sharing, where is a washer machine?
I do like it but the roof is flat, how weather resistant is it and ventilation is a concern. All in all I think it was nice.
This is cute and the lady seems really nice, but you can go to the Tumbleweed tiny house company and buy the plans for something much nicer at a much better overall cost. There is a 7 by 14 house on wheels (wheebee) that costs about 20,000 to build.
Where can I buy plans it's so simplistic I love it
Anyone know what happens to the black and gray waste water? In an RV it is held in a tank until it can be emptied. Also how would one change the sheets on the bed? So little room up there!
Happen to me too.. I was homeless for 9 months here is USA sleeping in my car ( it is ilegal to sleep in any car). The problem here ( and almost in every Country).... the Goverment do not allow Tinny houses even in you own back yard unless you property is in a rural area. I will be more thant happy to put/install one cube like this one in a trailer and live free of goverment taxes, regulations/etc. (Solar/wind power need to be install)
Hi Kirsten Do you know of any tiny house communities in France that rent out homes permanently for 1 person
I hope you see this. Thank you for all the awesome videos.
Beautiful Design. But the price tag is a bit high for my tastes even with the amenities included. All that aside great work and inspiration. Wouldn't mind vacationing there at all.
hey're not cheap, but the 30,900 euro (~$40,000) price tag, includes all transport to the site and marketing (since it's assumed they'll be used as vacation rentals).
This is small but nice, I would totally live in a place like this...provided I did not have to worry too much about natural disasters
thts nice
build a ramp on the outside with a large dog door, or...a winch, and a dog crate that doubles as a chair lol. (doggy elevator)
I want one
Comme d habitude ce n est que pour les gens qui ont du pognon vive la France et les pauvres ?
The French are so cool!
Those pods are cool but a used 5th wheel trailer (that you can buy for 8000 in the US) would serve much the same function.
Nice little house. I'd live in one, but 40 grand? Holy smokes!
i would like to see americans live this humbly!as a former home builder maybe i should use the concept in an american version
This is so cute and very practical.
I love it . i would live in that. How much $
While I do appreciate the attention to detail, as all construction in these seems like furniture grade hardwoods, I also feel they are pricey, even today. I can see a couple, or trio, placed underneath a geodesic domed greenhouse construct, so a tiny community could raise their own food.
I really like it, but 30,900 euro? I think around 20,000 euro would be acceptable.
@loudwaters9 actually living under a rock would be awsome, like an under ground house and the roof is a rock?
where is the washing machine kept?
..yeah but how rich is this lady?
cute
I think I could build such a cube much cheaper and with 80% recycled materials. 3 pallets across 3 dimensions for the shell. once you establish this you go to town with fixtures etc. 54 pallets that you can get for free almost anywhere as the base leaves your budget wide open. 10k tops for the structure I am thinking of. will brainstorm and see if I can make one.
Very nice, but the price is too high I could build a 1200 sq ft house for that.
Works I guess as a small holiday home
