Tiny matchbox apartment hides closet & bathtub in drawers

  • Micro-apartments are common in historically dense cities like Paris and Barcelona, but architect Valentina Maini wasn't interested in typical small space solutions like lofted sleeping quarters or murphy beds. She wanted her 25 square meter home (269 square feet) to look a bit more conventional, but to stack functions.
She hired a carpenter to create a dining table that slides over a matching bench to create more room for guests (she's had 20 over for wine and cheese). She didn't stop there. The bench also slides to reveal a full-sized bathtub: her micro-spa. Valentina filled her need for leg-less chairs using traditional zen tatami chairs that can be placed above her bathtub/bench for eating or reading or removed for bath hour (or used to create a viewing lounge outside her balcony window).
Not interested in the daily work involved in a transforming bed, Valentina simply raised her mattress a few extra feet and set to work creating a closet below. Recycling three large cabinets from her former workplace (her tiny pad is now also her home office), she created sliding drawers for clothing that tuck within sliding drawers for the cabinets that all tuck neatly beneath her sleeping quarters (though if she'd had 20 centimeters more in height she would have created a hanging closet within the cabinets).

Myriam Cliche I've just discovered this channel and the whole idea of living in a small space, which is not for me at all, but I'm amazed at what people can achieve in the space they have. Today I thought about it some more and I feel like its almost like reverting back to childhood. Having a cubby house, a tree house, or even a small tent in the backyard to sleep in once in a while was always fun for me and my siblings (I'm one of five) Perhaps when we were younger we were on to something, but we grow up thinking more is better.

Lol, time share! Find a group of like minded, a delapitdated estate and restore on shares.
Older houses should render many spaces of servant quarters and other such space to be converted to micro apts. Larger formal rooms could then be restored for ??

Has it occurred to anyone that is calling the bookshelves a waste of space that she works from home and those books are necessary resources intended for research, not novels (and if they are novels why shouldn't she surround herself with what she loves)? And to those who prefer ebooks, she may not have an ereader, or she may have had the majority of her library before getting one. Replacing all those books with digital copies, assuming all those books are even available digitally, would be very expensive.

I have about 15 more feet to work with than she did, and particularly find the bed with storage exciting because I am getting too old for a loft with many stairs, but I also like the fact that you can hide the bed in your living area. I love the clever furniture in her apartment. The bed and drawer system , the table and tatami chairs and the bathtub!! Wow , what a wonderful way to make the most of your space. Kirsten you have a wonderful job lol! Thank you for uploading all these videos , I've seen some really imaginative ways to live tiny :)

great use of the space! I live in a tiny space myself, so this video is great inspiration ...I must say that everytime I read a comment about books being "way too many" or a "waiste of space", is like a knife going thru my heart...so glad I'm a babe from the 60's prior to the e-shit...

Great use of space. Really, this is brilliant. As human population goes up, and space decreases, this will be the new way of living. Humans think they need more space than they actually do.

I really love that she used bamboo. Made it personal and has a view. I couldn’t live without my books ( bookshelves) too. But I would really have liked to see the toilet ( bathroom) more and kitchen. My bed is also raised ( containers/ storage ) under and I have a balcony ( small). growing herbs and orchids. It’s expensive to live many places and using my imagination was key 🕊

  • @SamoScopom
    @SamoScopom 9 лет назад +46

I could live in that no problem. I really like the bed/storage thing, it's really smart. You can pull all of them out and have a nice workspace desk. And I like the fact that it has 2 rows of drawers so the things you don't need that often can be more at the back, so you don't need to pull the whole thing out.
If it was my, I wouldn't probably have a bath tub and I would make the bathroom a bit bigger.

What a remarkable and brilliant use of space! Thanks for sharing! I am amazed that anyone would criticize this woman for having books. The accumulated knowledge and ideas of man is, to me, the only material thing worth having. They can take everything else from me but not my books. A society that does not prize books has already descended into savagery and a new Dark Age. Thank God for those of us who are like the Irish monks preserving precious legacies.

She knew the importance of spaces, visual perceptions and optimizing . She personalized it into a space that fit her needs quite efficiently and as an architecture student who loves studying small spaces I think she did a really good job. My only complaint would be WAYYYY to many books xD but then again I belong to a more digital generation.

Uriel D.B. I agree with most of your comments except the books’ one. I think they give the space, colour and personality. Obviously she enjoys having them otherwise she would’ve not included them in her place. Each to their own ;)

It's impossible to have too many books and it's fantastic to finally see a small space that has room for books. Sorry you're so digitally focused - you really don't know the sheer pleasure of holding, reading, smelling and owning real books. BTW, your digital books are doing you no good if you don't know that the word is 'too'...many books, not 'to'....many books. Or do digital books make space by misspelling words? ;)

She was financially restricted but she managed to get something so cute and special. She was also very clever with her design and that bathtub is genius idea.
