We did this almost 2 years ago. We changed our master bedroom into a studio apartment and my mom lives in there and myself, my bro in law and husband live in the rest of the house. It’s a nice apartment and my mom loves it. It’s nice to have her close. She’s 83.

Multigenerational living used to be the norm. We moved away from it in the post-WWII era, to our detriment mostly. Glad to see it's coming back in fashion.

@@pampire13 I imagine multigenerational living would be wonderful in a home where everyone treated everyone else with appreciation, love and respect. When I was 15, my Granddad died and my Grandmother came to live with my Mother, Dad, my older brother and me. My Mother and Grandmother bickered and criticized each other constantly. My brother had a job and a girlfriend and came home just long enough to eat and sleep. My Dad sat silently by, paid the bills and kept quiet. I loved my dad and felt sorry he was unable to have a moment’s peace under his own roof. I couldn’t stand the animosity. It was a sad home, and I left as soon as I could. I never found a way to be happy around my Mother or Grandmother again. My Mother, Dad, and Grandmother are all gone now. My brother and I live 30 mins apart but rarely communicate or see each other. I’m 70 and it makes me sad to this day…

This brings back good memories. Growing up my grandma always lived with us (five kids!). We didn't have much but she managed to make her room so beautiful and cozy. It was a special little get away from the rest of the chaotic house. We would fight over who got to sleep in her room. We'd sit in her big fluffy bed watching Law and order and unsolved mysteries thinking we were cool because she'd let us taste her nighttime wine cooler lol

My husband and I are planning to buy an RV and travel 6-9 months of the year. Our home has 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, an upstairs family room and a spacious Florida room- too much space for us now. We have decided to have my oldest daughter, her husband and my GRANDSON move into our home. We will be moving our bedroom and living area upstairs so that they can have the complete downstairs. It’s a win win situation. We will always have a space to come home to and they will have a home ( which is practically unachievable for young families these days). Too, we are making thoughtful renovations which will meet our aging needs in the future. We are having a junk removal company come and help us declutter three decades of accumulated stuff; and, like you, we are only keeping the most precious items that have a story. We want this home to be empty almost, so that they can fill it with their own things.

My “so called” friends found it necessary to criticize my stuff instead of appreciating it the way I do. This video validates my quirkiness and my “love” of things. I have too much stuff , but I truly thank you for the joy you find in your creations as well as your stuff. Critical people are hurtful. You , on the other hand , are nurturing. Thank you so much. I feel like the Velvetine rabbit . Even though it was tattered from being loved., I , on the other hand feel tattered from close friends who felt the need to make me feel less than . Thanks for showing me that loving your very unusual stuff is nothing to be ashamed of, but rather, as I see it, it’s a gift. I really felt bad about this. But now I feel much better. You are proud of yourself as I was before I was brutally criticized for being me. Thanks again❤

If I might be so bold to speculate it would be that you feel much more content & cozy in your creative, very well organized & aesthetically pleasing “ little house” than at this stage in life you would feel if you had your entire house to yourself. So many in our age group are overwhelmed & frustrated with ALL their stuff & space of which they have little use for & are no longer motivated to dust & clean & keep sparkling. Kudos to you for having it all .... enjoyable & manageable living space, financial security, family nearby , outlets for travel & fun & the list continues ... you did it !!! 😄.

Right now I have a little trouble cleaning. Dust gives me an allergy reaction, so I have to take meds and wear a mask when I dust. Sweeping the hardwood floors creates the same issue and adds back pain to the total. I’m able to drive safely and would love to travel in my minivan, but haven’t successfully done it yet. Keeping the house is a problem for me, but hubs likes it. Though he’s having trouble mowing the grass this year. We’re both too old for the upkeep. 😊

I wish I could turn my spare bedroom into a studio apartment like this. But it would be over the septic if I built out and it’s too small otherwise. I turned my whole upstairs into an apartment and have a great roommate and would like another so I could possibly retire some day. My requirements are separate living space and bathrooms. My town doesn’t allow tiny houses. I would’ve put one in my yard as a rental.

You have your private space (ideally a requirement after a certain age) and yet the pleasure of others company if so desired. Might I add, it’s to your aging benefit to have others present in your living space for a protection. That protection is for your mental, physical, emotional and overall welfare.

I had a problem with birds hitting our patio sliding glass door and so I installed bead curtains. Not only do they have vertically strung bamboo tubes,I saw some small bamboo tubes cut into a couple inch pieces of random different lengths, and strung with the pieces horizontally stacked and strung with holes drilled in the middle of the tube. They were in a catalogue, and we moved before I could order any,but they were really cool and had charm.Plastic is toxic, and tacky, and should be banned. The claim is now we are consuming a credit card's size of plastic into our bodies every week, with micro plastics in all the water, with synthetic and polyester clothing as one source;and PFAs in the water, even from take out containers and pizza boxes(teflon, forever chemicals),and even found in the Himalayas, microplastics in fetuses in the womb.Pthalates,BPA, and estrogen mimicking compounds in plastic are all damaging to our health;and like the canary in the coal mine, many wild and domesticated animals are smaller than us and even more susceptible. Pharmaceutical companies are required by the FDA to test their products for the levels of plastic that their products contain, because it moves into the products from their containers, and there are legally established limits that can not be exceeded. The Toxin Solution by Dr Pizzarno is one source of info, and Duke University Med.Center mailed out info in it's regular publication to Duham,N.C.residents.Some plastic has always been known to be migratory -it moves into the water with contact. The Weather Channel internet had a video that said Florida's Red Fish have been tested, and they are full of heart medication and opiods. If you love animals, and not eating poison;see about an outhouse, and a potty chair.

I enjoyed this video SO MUCH.
Why, it mimics my private space, minus the gym & kitchen space because I am in an apartment! I have a huge walking closet, which I put so many items in. The bathroom, all to myself, is directly across from my space.
I did this layout because, I spend most of my time aline with my Teacup Chihuahua. My husband, living with PD is confined to a bed, sleeps in his hospital bed in the Dining area. It is more convenient for Paramedics to get to him there and the water is available for his sponge baths.
All the space in my apartment has been designed by me to create little spaces. I bought beautiful wicker screens that I have between the living room and his sleeping space so he has privacy.
I have been a small space person my entire life. If it wasn't for my need to care for my hubby if 56 years, I would be a full-time Van lifer.
Thank you so much, as always, for brightening my lonely days. You are such a God send.

I loved the tour of your very handsomely appointed goldilocks (just right) space. It addressed my curiosities-a medicine (supplement) cabinet in a kitchen, the limited counter space? After the tour of your van I thought Lulu is ingenious; what you’ve done with your abode punctuates your amazing creativity. I agree, my van experience revealed how comfortably I can and enjoy life in my current 775 square foot space with all of my needs and desires perfectly met. Downsizing (right-sizing) affords me a level of freedom that I NEVER imagined. I get to spend my time doing things I enjoy rather than cleaning and maintaining square footage and items that only complicate life. After my husband past, my son and daughter-in-law moved in with me, so I took the large living room and took down a wall made a small kitchen and down the way was a bathroom, closed off the wall that connected to the other part of the home and wala I had a small apartment. In the living room, I placed a large ikea cubby shelf that divided my bedroom from my small living room. The living room was in front of the home, so I had my own entrance. They had THERES that had a deck out the glass doors. It works and it’s lovely. People couldn’t believe I actually made a small apartment out of a large living room. Thanks for sharing🌻
