aVOID: if a Swiss Army knife were a tiny home

  • All of the furniture and rooms in Leonardo Di Chiara’s tiny house fold, swing, and, pivot into the walls, so, when closed, the space is absent of color, like a whiteboard perfect for the creative process of a young architect.
Calling it aVOID in reference to the hollow shell it can morph into, Di Chiara says it’s more aspirational than a reflection of his not-yet-hyper-minimalist lifestyle,
He wanted an uncluttered lifestyle but he also wanted to be mobile and to live in a big city. His solution, to build a row house on wheels. Di Chiara has currently wedged his row house between two tiny houses on the campus of the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin where Van Bo Le-Mentzel, designer of the "one square meter" house, has organized a tiny living experiment.
Di Chiara hopes to continue the experimenting when he moves to Milan. His idea is to create a prototype for a Migratory Neighborhood that could be replicated across Europe so urban nomads like himself could find temporary places to park their homes in schools (during the summer), parks (in winter), abandoned lots, etc. He sees it as a win-win for cities eager to keep eyes on the street in isolated or temporarily unused parts of town.

@Angela James I know!!! I’ve watched a countless number of small space videos because they’re such an interesting design challenge and I’ve NEVER seen anything like the chairs. Absolutely OUTSTANDING design. Genius.
As to the rest of the void, it’s still a work in progress, which is how it’s presented to us. I appreciate it as a concept, applaud his skills as a collaborator, and admire his energy, commitment and vision. I don’t think all white would really be viable in a commercial application and the ladder looks dangerous. A round rod at the ceiling level and hooks on the end of the ladder would help, as is seen in a built in floor to ceiling bookcase. The kitchen faucet is REALLY good design. If the unfolding table was closer to the kitchen, along with 2 more chairs, it would function as both additional counter space, better seating for guests, and of course a desk. I’m not commenting on the bathroom, he acknowledges that it needs a lot more work. All and all, a really interesting concept and video.

Love the minimalism. It doesn't stay minimal once you put it together, but it looks so clean and inviting. I really enjoy blank spaces, I think it especially helps if you are doing a lot of design work being that you have to keep track of a lot of "moving" parts in your head and construct them through a screen, on paper, or physically. Your mind can start to feel messy if you are also in a messy space, having to sort through visual information that isn't related to your work.

The sheer ingenuity and creative that goes into producing some of these wonderful small spaces is really fascinating. This is one of the most admirable products of the small space design philosophy I have come across. 5. Loft bed instead of low one.
    6. Bookshelves covering most of the wall opposite the kitchen side.

The grey is that so everything may be equal so no color cringyness... even an OCD person gets annoyed with color patterns.

While I do very often like to be influenced by the objects around me, clutter stifles my creativity, so having a place that I could close and open and transform into any sort of space I want for working on different projects would be wonderful.

It’s a therapeutic pet project due to his childhood trauma of having a tiny room and now being an architect. He’s not going to live there. Most likely, no one ever will.
This is a classic example of what happens when modern architects design houses: Everything is meticulously thought out but there is no SOUL and very few (if any) people enjoy the quality of life is this soulless desert.
It’s impractical beyond belief. Just look at the fridge - it had no room. You’d need to shop at least every second day. And a toilet/bathroom with a floor to ceiling glass door... only an architect can think that’s a good idea. Of how about keeping the garbage just under the computer. Unbelievable.

Have small, long life, hydraulic servos on all the open-able panels and such with integrated touch/voice controls (Alexa or something). A strip of concealed LED lighting looping around the walls near the floor and or roof. Better climate control A/C. Solar panels/batteries in the drywall. Inbuilt low profile electronics (sound/tv/etc).
Most importantly, well not really, but the small panel @4:56, the one next to the slatted one, could be a smooth from factor roller-door that rolls up to reveal one of those small robot vacuums :)

It's almost a perfect tiny house. Craftsmanship is just incredible.

Brilliant! I love no side windows so they can be parked side by side without staring in your neighbors window.

Excellent, important lessons on Living Small, as less in more, especially when cleverly, creatively packaged. The is the future of housing which is here, right now, not a fantasy.

I was surprised to see so many negative responses. I find it fascinating and beautiful. It gets created when it is used. I live in a van and so I appreciate the discipline of putting every thing away. I love this house.

It's really innovative thinking and I like the design and concept. Specially in areas where housing and space is tight. But it does look sterile. Still with a bit of colour and your own personal touches, it would turn into home.

I think the contrast between white sterile, and warm wood, is very intentional and exactly what he wanted. Warm when relaxing, reading, socializing, etc. But flat and white when working, so you have distraction free vibrant environment.
Nothing stops you using different materials, mixed woods, painted or colored stuff on these surfaces tho. Also another tricks with white is that in the evening and night, you could use colored light to paint it any color you want.

@@movax20h yeah it's like peeling away the white to reveal the space you want makes it feel a lot bigger if you get rid of the bedroom and it's just white around you in the kitchen.
