Sliding home enlarges with railed-walls, underfloor bed & tub reveal

  • Caspar Schols built his first shapeshifting house in his mother’s backyard as her writing cabin that, by sliding a room-on-rails, could convert into a place to sleep under the stars.
He has since perfected his expandable home with 10 prototypes: his most recent model is robust enough to serve as a primary residence and has a bathtub and guest bed hidden in the floor.
[Watch the original video in which Caspar Schols shows us the 1st. prototype shed built for his mother: • Mechanical cottage mov... ]
The house can be opened up - on sunny days, for nature-watching, or just to sleep directly under the stars - with just a push. The entire walls and ceiling of the house move, but anyone can propel this 3,000 kilograms (over 6000 pounds) room-on-rails because Schols created a system that is “super low friction”.
To create a well-insulated home that has walls that move, Schols and his team designed the rails with wind labyrinths to trap the air and added brushes to any moving surface to prevent airflow.

This concept would be great as an extension of a house, with an indoor/outdoor patio lounge and kitchen. I would keep half the house fixed instead, including a bedroom and bathroom you wouldn't have to fiddle with every day.
Also, this might work great for an indoor/outdoor swimming pool that you could use year round, even in cold places like Canada, where you still get a lot of sunlight in winter! You could heat the pool in winter with a wooden stove.

Wow! MANY improvements since that first prototype on his Mom's property. I LOVE that it's air sealed now and the glass has double panes. The attention to detail in making it more weather tight, well insulated and with a kitchen, bathroom, not water and power is fantastic! I also notice he's added even a pocket for the glass section to mate into the stationary piece with for air sealing. I really love the original, but having both ends move didn't allow for the kitchen and bathroom. Pretty brilliant. Nice to know he's developing a kit that can be flat packed and shipped, though I'm sure it would be extremely expensive (from our perspective). Anyway, love this one even more than the first!

I would make it a free standing kitchen on one deck, which can be covered just by the glass, or the body section, or opened up. So the door on that side would have to be some kind of larger bi-folding doors.

Kirsten, I love your videos showing folks who rehabilitate old farms and the like. They are not adding something where there was nothing before. I dislike promotion of this type of construction-a brand new, high-end toy in a pristine area; bragging rights for the ultra-wealthy; expanses of glass that kill birds with no mitigation for that in sight. That’s just very uncool. To me this is a “concept house” that would have better stayed on paper. The impracticality of huge expanses of glass that slide in and out of sight is evident by the designer’s embarrassment while trying to explain the “connection to nature” as being aware that it’s about to rain and that you need to urgently slide the glass back into its protective wall or face a huge cleaning job. It will be difficult to keep it clean of bird droppings in general and leaves sticking to it after a storm (tho this debris will help protect flying birds!). For bird mitigation he should consider a product like 3M “Feather Friendly” exterior film or one of the other “Feather Friendly” products. I wish this would be a requirement for every home you film-otherwise no promotion on your channel. Or at least I’d urge you to challenge the builder/homeowner on that question. Mitigation should be done on every home that has expanses of glass or worse, outright mirrored exterior walls (I think you showed one in Spain?). It’s not just my opinion-over 100 million birds are killed in this way every year in the US alone, and knowing North American bird populations have dropped by about a third in our lifetime, I think we need to stop promoting unprotected glass walls that allow humans to “connect with nature.” It’s like flying to some far corner of the earth to birdwatch while dumping tons of CO2 into the air to get there-there’s a glaring disconnect here, why doesn’t everybody see this? Thank you for the opportunity to comment.

    • @kirstendirksen
      @kirstendirksen  Год назад +2

Thanks for taking the time to write. I would say while I agree I love the stories of old farms and more hand-crafted stuff. I also like doing stories with people who are trying to look at some of our preconceived ideas around what is a house. And while sometimes these people have plenty of resources to do this with a bigger budget, I also think these projects often inspire those more DIY makers who then can innovate on those ideas with a smaller budget. I know that more and more builders are using glass coatings that only birds can detect. As far as cost goes, I do think that this home could be a better alternative than a massive home that many with large budgets choose. Caspar also talked about how it can be disassembled and reassembled easily since they don't use glues, so it's quite light on the land in that respect.

At 25:50 I thought they had the bed in a separate room on the opposite end of the house giving you a bedroom but it was just the way the shot was angled but I think that’s a much better design.
With so many people wanting a bedroom on the first floor I think it would be better to have a divider wall with door on the one wooden side the one without the kitchen bathroom as a bedroom with a wall and door, kinda the way it looks at 25:50 with of course the bed in there not in the middle of the house.
I just think it’s more practical to have a closed off bedroom, unless you are younger and don’t mind sleeping in the loft, though I’d love the loft if they can somehow make some tall stairs going up to the sleeping loft. You probably could, going down beside and or over the fireplace. it just might be seen through the glass but I think it would look cool if you could build metal and wood floating Stairs making it almost look like art :)

Imagine a street of these - plus shops - plus some kind of fun-park and pathways using the same concepts.
Surely this the next energy/spirit step for society.

Very interesting design. Perhaps as a dacha or getaway bungalow, it would be quite perfect. The clutter of notmal, everyday life would be unsuitable for such a home, but as a space to escape that clutter it would be magical.

Love it. 9 years ago we began our own transition from traditional jobs, home, and approach to “living” life.
Today we find ourselves much happier, content, and satisfied in life. The “stuff” we surround ourselves with, because marketing sold us on their dream, isn’t happiness. In fact that stuff becomes a weight, a burden. I would encourage others to find what truly works for them toenjoy life to the fullest. Whatever that looks like for you, but I can confidently say that it is NOT following magazines, commercials, or what the vast majority around you are doing
