    I recently visited my friends Hannah and Jared and they mentioned that they've been stuck with their bathroom for over a year and need some help with the design. I wanted to try out a few new rental friendly techniques throughout this space and even wallpapered for the first time (paste style wallpaper). When i saw the final outcome of this space I was honestly shocked myself. What was your favorite addition?

    Heads up, if you leave painters tape on the wall for extended time the glue breaks down and when you go to take it off it can pull the under paint off.

    While we are not renters, I still like learning renter-friendly techniques because sometimes I want to spruce something up but not make a permanent change.
    I love painters tape - my younger daughter put up a wall of posters and photos using painters tape and 5 years later, pulling it off, there’s no residue. This wouldn’t be true of masking tape (ask me how I know!). My only concern with Drew’s method was whether the wallpaper paste could penetrate the painters tape, but he tested that so it’s all good.

      @@lonefox that's great you had that experience this time, but you really can't guarantee with "painter's tape" that it won't pull up paint, especially the longer that it's left. Especially with this volume. Overarchingly, the evidence from decades of jobs still shows you should not apply painters' tape long-term if you need the surface underneath to keep its paint coating. It's one thing to do yourself, another to suggest that any adhesive peel-n-stick wall treatment is not truly renter-friendly, and to proceed with extreme caution (lightly applying the tape, not pressing down hard) and to have a backup plan (color-matched paint). I know you do projects often, but knowing professional painters has taught me that the experience you're paying for is all the problems that "don't" happen on a job. Otherwise, great and creative vid!

      YES! I was thinking this same thing. I have a home and have been wanting to change up our bathroom but haven't because I'm hesitant about permanent changes so these ideas were mind blowing to me and soooo helpful!

    • @justtryme2020
      @justtryme2020 2 года назад +6

      I absolutely agree about just not wanting to commit to a permanent change for a room even when you own your house! My only question about the painter's tape and wallpaper paste was whether the moisture of the bathroom would effect the adhesive? I worked at Sherwin Williams for years and would not be concerned with the tape damaging the wall or paint as long as you used painter's tape.

    Drew, Honey, that's MDF, otherwise known as Particle Board, which is made of sawdust and glue, dried under pressure. If you don't paint it, it absorbs every drop of moisture it can find. It's useful, but it's a very different animal from Plywood. Love your channel, so fun and inspirational. Fabulous Results!

  • @sandrakicklighter2735
    @sandrakicklighter2735 2 года назад +543

    Just a note, those first pieces of wood you show us cutting. It's not plywood, it's particleboard. So make sure it's sealed well because particleboard swells if it gets wet. It's a useful alternative to plywood which is more expensive but steps need to be taken to keep it safe from water.

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs 2 года назад +145

      Technically its not particle board, which has a super rough finish. It is, however, high-density fiberboard which is what many cabinets and baseboards are made from. Painting will waterproof it, BUT the bottom that is touching the floor has not been painted. Next time I would suggest painting all sides before installing. Applying a bead of silicone that later can be easily removed from the tile surface will also stop any water from getting under the shelving unit. This is also why you should also always silicone on any baseboards in a bathroom or kitchen as they, too, are never painted on the bottom or backside.

      I might use wide white shelving that can be cut to the right length for sides and interior shelving, the white melamine surface is used on cabinets in bathrooms and is water resistant, also lifting up the bottom shelf to clear the floor would be another detail to consider in his great idea for bathroom storage.

A towel is obviously needed near the sink and placing the hook where you did also allows for the towel to hide the outlet while being conveniently located. However, even if GFI, the potential for a hanging wet towel, or when reaching with wet hands/face, being over the outlet would make me nervous.

I can’t believe people have mirrors over the sink when they could have a ton of storage there. I put a medicine cabinet beside the mirror in one house. Looked nice.

    For people who want to do the vanity: it's better to have legs on a vanity because it could get wet from the bottom in a bathroom and create mold issues if air can't get under there (or water damage to the structural integrity of the vanity). You could still use the exact same steps, just subtract the height of the legs from the height of the box and screw them under. They don't have to be tall to be functional. (Yes, I have learned this the hard way 😅😆)

    I didn't think I would like this temporary decor, but I do! Someone could even put some peel 'n stick glass tile over the sink. Nice job! Tip: Paint all your pieces - the particleboard and wood trim, etc - before installing them. No tape, no worries about getting paint on anything else - so much easier!

    The vanity is such a good hack for home owners with a tight budget too! I hate pedestal sinks but vanities cost as much as the makeover to replace 😅 so thats a super nice option!

    I love the Roman shade so much, I went and looked her tutorial up and am definitely going to try it. Also, painters tape shouldn't be left on anything longer than 14 days because it can rip up paint, not to mention it's nearly impossible to get the residue off. Plus, humidity can loosen it and mold can start to grow on it. I learned both the hard way.

    A good tip for rental friendly wallpaper is using starch as a glue alternative. Then you just peel and wipe away - especially in a bathroom with semigloss paint. Test it out. Thick starch mixture (just like a jug of the concentrate ironing stuff!) diluted to make it into paint. Use it on the back and on the wall.

    Most of us have small and boring bathrooms, whether we're living in an apartment or a smaller and older home (not all of us live in McMansions), so this kind of inspiration is refreshing. Wondering if you painted behind the toilet tank. It's easy to reach in the back to paint if you remove the top of the tank and use a small roller on a short extension. Pet peeve: plain clear glass in bathroom windows. WHAT? That's not your fault of course, and the window does have the Roman shade on it, although it looks too thin to provide much opacity at night when the lights are on in the bathroom. Maybe guys don't think about that kind of thing as much.

    • @hannahoros
      @hannahoros 2 года назад +9

      If you noticed, I think there's a film sticker on the window which made the window not fully visible from the outside.

      And since he does this for a living, I would bet that he knows how to paint behind a toilet.

    I love the design of the under sink storage but why did you use OSB in a potentially wet environment? I think using traditional plywood would have been a much more durable option.

    • @angieemm
      @angieemm 2 года назад +4

      It would have been better if he'd actually used OSB instead of the fiber/particle board stuff he used.
