Every other video on the RV-500: "I'm just going to run through a few of the modes and presets because otherwise this video would be too long." Me: "Awww" [Notices this video]: "Yesssss" 5 minutes in: Run off to get an RV-500 that's popped up on kijiji. 10 minutes in: "This video is as gorgeous as it is useful." 15 minutes in: Pulls out pedal, plugs it in to follow along. Thanks! Gonna read the manual too, but let's be honest this video is so much better.
Not even interested in getting an RV-500, but this is perfect to put on and enjoy in the background while I work. Thank you for putting this up. Fantastic playing!
@@cloudconnect i understand your POV, it's a long video, but for me, i'd like to gather as much information about a pedal (especially for ones as pricey as this one). I'd skip to the parts I'm interested in, and this video provides useful information about what each modes and controls do, so for someone like me, this format of video is helpful. I kinda stray away from reviews that talks a lot, and you heard very little of what the pedal can actually produce. My 2 cents tho. Peace!
This demo totally sold me on the RV500. Was debating upgrading my blue sky to a big sky. Had a hard time justifying that price tag, especially since everyone and their mother already uses the same verb patch. Each mode on the RV500 is sooooo customizable. And I dont have to spend $500 just because it says Strymon.
I think the difference with the boss pedals (for me at least) is that you dont have one or two modes which are great, then a bunch of weird stuff that you will never use. Even their weirder modes are MUSICAL and inspiring. I think the shimmer delays on the rv-500 and rv-200 are a great example. They sound better than any comparable algorithm I have ever heard (including all my fancy plugins) I really think boss nailed it with these.
@@ruffrider6653 I think that's a valid-ish point... and I'd add to it the fact the company is based in CA. However, I'd also argue that the components and assembly labor aren't that expensive. What you're buying with these digital pedals is algorithms that can be expensive to develop... but Strymon developed their algos over a decade ago, any development cost has since been recovered 10x's over. I think strymon just wants to be seen as a botique pro-sumer product provider and knows enough people will buy at the premium price. I also think that Boss provides the better value - their altos and GUI are far more than what you get in strymon.
man I feel same, not so much customization on Big Sky and same verb sound in all their models, and here I see alot of customization and beautifull reverb, so I can do much with it as a sound designer
i'm thankful that you spent so much time and detail here, especially on the Hall settings. best and most thorough overview of a pedal i've ever encountered
Excellent job and nicely done! This was HUGE in getting a handle on the capabilities of this unit. Your "slap" inclusion was excellent in helping to clarify the algorithm being applied to the signal in each case. Many thanks indeed!
Amazing demo for the night, just best reverb demo I ever heard and i'm sold on RV-500) Can't wait how I can use it with synthesizers, I synthesized some guitar sounds on Minilogue XD, I think it will sounds perfect with this reverb
I own a bunch of Strymon pedals, a Chase Bliss Audio Brothers, Empress Effects ParaEQ, Cali76 CD compressor.. Top notch stuff. I've also got a BOSS MD-500. For a multi-effects unit it's great. I will say this: the BOSS 200 and 500 series if nothing else are the best bang-for-your-buck pedals you can get right now.
I used to have a PT-PRO board full of pedals, over 12-13 pedals with 2 Pedalpower 4x4, but now my board is only consist of polytune 2, hypergravity compressor, fulltone ocd, MVP volume pedal, DD500 and RV500, all in a PT-JR board, powered by a single pedalpower 4x4. I am happy. :)

@@RyanLutton So these are just settings that I can download so that my reverb sounds exactly as you set it up? I didn't know you could do those on pedals. I really like the first part of your demo under the Hall type. That was the sound I'm trying to achieve for my music.
Yep that's it :) although they may not sound fully identical as different guitars and amps change sound a lot.. but it will be in the same ball park for you to tweak
I saw your RV-6 demo a while back and also LOVED that murky lowpass ambient shimmer tone you achieved in that video and I just got an RV-500 recently and was not able to dial in that same kind of shimmer tone on the RV-500? Were you able to achieve that same aforementioned murky shimmer on your RV-500? I am out of the country atm so I can't fiddle with it more right now but I was just curious. Also Boss seriously needs to update the firmware to extend decay beyond 10 seconds amongst a handful of other things imho. EXCELLENT video by the way! This was one of the videos that really helped me decide on purchasing an RV-500. Subscribed. Keep up the good work man!
I haven't actually tried but I'll have a lil mess around today and see if I can dial something in! I was planning a comparison with the BigSky so this is a good excuse to film that :) I'm sure there is a way to get close to the RV-6 sounds after all there are so many parameters on this thing haha! I'd love a decay longer than 10 seconds that'd be great fingers crossed they release something, its interesting now with all these digital updatable pedals I find myself making more demos of the same pedals haha glad the video helped! happy to have you as a subscriber! thanks! I'll let you know if I can get close to the RV-6 sound :)
I'm very interested in the This verb. Some great sounds. But that Shimmer sounds horrible. Like nails on a chalkboard. But I may need one for all the other settings:)
Great demo, sfx sounds incredible! Just that makes me want to buy the rv500. How do you like the spring reverb? @@RyanLutton thank you so much :) I'm trying to decide between boss rv 500 and fender tre-verb. I think boss rv 500 is better than fender because (as far as ı know) fender tre verb has only sprng reverb
Thank you for the great and very informative video. I may have missed this and I apologize if I have, can you set the control button function differently for each reverb selection or preset?
It does not have a "church" or "cathedral" setting, but those are basically tweaked "hall" reverbs. You would be able to get a "church" sound by tweaking the eq and modulation of "hall". It only has up to 10 seconds of decay though.
I'm new to some of this stuff so forgive my ignorance. How does this pedal work for vocals as well? I am hoping to find something that I can control the reverb of my guitar as well as my voice. Thank you!^^
Thank you for responding! I actually went with the V-500 and bought a basic reverb pedal for my guitar. It's all for live play, but I do like being in my basement studio as well and record some songs. I sing, and play so it probably made sense to get the vocal pedal instead and have more focus on that. :)
depends what you're looking for on your pedalboard really :) they are two very different pedals! the RV-500 can do lots of things the Immerse can't.. but the Immerse is one of the best reverbs for its price in my opinion :)
Depends what you're doing, you don't "need" an amp, if you're a guitarist I'd reccomend getting a digital amp. I used the Waves GTR3 stuff for ages and loved it. that way you can plug into your focusrite and use a digital amp to get the best out of your guitar and the pedal. if you're using a synth then you don't need to worry about an amp. :)
mostly yes, and in demo videos pretty much always :) my rig at the moment I run everything in front of the amps, but i have two very clean amps. I also use a Marshall sometimes so when i'm using that i'd use the loop
They are great. I found a Reverb preset on RUclips for the HX stomp that is right there with the Big Sky you just have to be creative but it's all there
John Hernandez its pretty much ready to go right out of the box, you can plug it in to your Mac to download updates if needed as well as edit the presets to fit what you want, which is what he is doing but it’s a lot easier and faster on a computer if you’re able to!
I have a few complaints. There are no indiscriminate blues licks, there is no gurning throughout the entire video. There are also no stacked gain pedals. Jeez
