CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mookie (Spike Lee) calls Pino (John Turturro) on his hurtful racism and other neighbors tell how they really feel about the other races.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Spike Lee dives head-first into a maelstrom of racial and social ills, using as his springboard the hottest day of the year on one block in Brooklyn, NY. Three businesses dominate the block: a storefront radio station, where a smooth-talkin' deejay (Samuel L. Jackson) spins the platters that matter; a convenience store owned by a Korean couple; and Sal's Famous Pizzeria, the only white-operated business in the neighborhood. Sal (Danny Aiello) serves up slices with his two sons, genial Vito (Richard Edson) and angry, racist Pino (John Turturro). Sal has one black employee, Mookie (Spike Lee), who wants to "get paid" but lacks ambition. His sister Jade (Joie Lee, Spike's sister), who has a greater sense of purpose and a "real" job, wants Mookie to start dealing with his responsibilities, most notably his son with girlfriend Tina (Rosie Perez). Two of Mookie's best friends are Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn), a monolith of a man who rarely speaks, preferring to blast Public Enemy's rap song Fight The Power on his massive boom box; and Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito), nicknamed for his coke-bottle glasses and habit of losing his cool. When Buggin' Out notes that Sal's "Wall of Fame," a photo gallery of famous Italian-Americans, includes no people of color, he eventually demands a neighborhood boycott, on a day when tensions are already running high, that incurs tragic consequences.

You know that everyone's swearing too much if Samuel L. Jackson is telling everyone to calm down.
LOL
Bruh😂😂😂😂😂😂
Samuel speaks the truth. We are ALL one in the same weather black' white or blue! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Someone said the magic word
Pulp Fiction diner scene
I love the conversation at the start of this scene, it's rare to see racism depicted in film as something casual and even passive rather than something active and violent. It creates a sharp contrast with the characters literally just shouting slurs into the camera, showing that it's two sides of the same coin.
Congrats on your Top Comment, fellow Oaklander. I agree with your assessment as well. May more of us be similarly minded. Yeeeee!
I remember seeing this at the movies, everybody laughed at the other sterotypes until the character cracked on their race. Spike was brillant in writing this segment.
1:38 that's the racism and evilness in Pino
LOL. Blacks and Italians had an "interesting" relationship in NYC back in the day.
fvecc we act the same though lol
Yup, every old school movie, gangster 🎥 from the 80s or early 90s
They sold heroin together mostly
More so in Louisiana. One crucial difference: Italians despise the welfare state.
Ive seen a Bronx tale lol
I can't believe Spike Lee was 32 years old in this. Man looks like he's just 17.
A fresh fade and a clean shave can clear YEARS off a man. No joke.
BLACK DON'T CRACK
TAPKING13 Ronald Reagan’s fault.
The most incredible thing of this movie in my opinion is the fact that Luís Antonio Ramos, the puerto rican guy at 2:20 was born in 1973, so if this movie was from 1989, he was only 15 or 16 years old when he looks 40!
@European Colonist if you smoke it. then you do
Samuel L Jackson was the smartest person in that scene
He was the smartest in the whole movie
He did the right thing
Nah Jackson said that what thing we not gonna have no name calling in this neighborhood
And that's the double truth, Ruth!
Senior Love Daddy
When Spike Lee gave us the greatest roast of all time 🔥🔥🔥
Lmfaoo
All those roasts were great...after all Spike did write them xD
Brandon Peel right
This is by far one of my favorite black movies of all time
@@1990758 Movies in general tbh
John Turturro is really good. The fact that he could make people hate his characters just shows how great of an actor he truly is. He is good in everything but my two favorite roles of his are in the movie ''Secret Window'' and television drama ''The Bronx is Burning'' where he gave a spot on portrayal of Yankee manager Billy Martin.
Don't forget Barton Fink

When Sam Jackson screaming at you is the most reasonable person in the room, it's time to chill out and reassess.
and thats the triple truth ruth
Like getting yelled at by Dave Grohl.
God I love Sam. Him getting old is so sad. He's always been fine.
Well I think that was the point as well. The movie is set during a massive heatwave and Sam's character is the only one who's in a cool air conditioned building

RUclips "debates" in a nutshell
If only we can have a samul l jackson to make everyone chill out

AllPureSkill that’s actually a stereotype to Hispanics, Dominicans, and Puerto Rican’s having a lot of children which is a pretty common stereotype
Can also apply to Mexicans and Central Americans
@@dalilinfant5170 they are hispanics
@@81summer98 I know but stereotypes among Hispanic and Latin American countries can differ.
For instance this stereotype would probably not apply to Argentinians.
I love how Spike @2:50 uses the classic technique of projecting Samuel L Jackson's chair towards the desk.
I love how it's the direct opposite of the other characters in the sequence. The camera propels us to them whilst Sammy J propels himself at us
steve randall lel
Anyone else notice that John Turturro didn't blink a single time during his rant? That guy has talent.
He blinks once but it's very fast
Gotta love how Spike Lee manages to be so of his time yet so ahead of his time. The content of this film is still so relevant in 2016.
Julie Briggs duh cause racism will never die
you should come visit 2018

This is one of the smartest sequences I've seen in any film.

Nigel Isaac Agree with you. ***** What's smart then?
You don't even know when this happen, i mean, i like the universe of the film stop, the characters are in a distinctive environment talking about what the have deep inside
The guy was right ''they're more than black'', they're men.
John Turturro owns it!!
I’m Italian and one of my closest friends is black.
He’s someone I really care about and he cares about me.
This movie hits pretty close to home for me......
LOL at 2:02 he says "gold chain wearing" about black people when he's wearing a gold chain
like shit😂😂😂
Italians are confused as shit.
John Smith so many contradictions. I believe they were all on purpose
But didn't Spike stated in the first part he was more like Africans that he realized?
K2 FU I don’t know about that, I’ve seen a few with good teeth.
the Italian stereotypes himself at the end of his roast by saying pizza pizza
💀💀💀💀💀💀
🤣
No, he said piece of pizza* not pizza pizza so it still counts as the best/worst roast.

Or Jade, Mookie's sister
he saves the koreans though
yeah. i guess the old woman too. and the DJ - even early on he tries to unify people
"Gold chain wearin" while wearing a gold flat lol
+David Frazier
Oh shit, it's Tyrone Biggums
That part was so hypocritical!
Its more of a thin necklace, rather than the over-the-top heavy gold chain that was popular in the hip hop scene at the time.
It’s a necklace. They’re a difference
Don't you just love how that Italian has a pope behind him as he rants?
A Polish Pope, John Paul II.
Alana Shary That’s Pope Paul VI
AfroMonarchist Antipope Paul VI aka Destroyer of the Catholic Faith.
Lol... he went the hardest
Being Black Catholic is so fun. People make fun of the pope and insult the Catholic church and me.
I don't understand why ppl call Spike Lee racist .......for pointing things out?
ConfrontationalRealist that made no fucking sense
ConfrontationalRealist The difference between both is that Spike Lee talks about race in his movies in order to get people to think about it an challenge current notions. Mel gibson says things that have been challenged since the50s but people still want to hold onto.
You are right, racism is a system that combines prejudice and power. I hope you don't need some history lessons about where the power lies in the US
bandawhat33 Spike Lee talks about race in his movies in order to get people to think about it and challenge current notions.
Lol did you just copy and paste that ?
I love how Sam Jackson is basically just watching the movie like us 😂
Part of the reason some people may think this is funny now is that the experience of seeing it on a phone/computer/table screen is so much different than seeing it in the theater on a full-sized screen. There, pushing in on the actors like that as they're delivering these epithets straight into the camera (and therefore into your face) was like having someone grab you by the throat and pin you with your back against a wall.
yeaaa, is not that deep dude. i do racism every day, is rly funny
I live in New Orleans and I live near a restaurant/cafe called Fiorella's. It is run by Italian and African Americans. People of all backgrounds (working-class, ethnic groups, etc) attend it and people all get along. It is the exact opposite of this movie.
That's how things should be that's really good to hear because people need to care and respect for one another that's great because in this movie everyone is a mess they go to war I'm super happy it's like that where you because it's a lot about being friendly instead of making crackhouse insults
Please. ppl got to eat. Stop lying. As soon as a crime is committed, who’s going to the blame or if black ppl complain about mass incarceration or fair housing and jobs, that kumbya ish you’re talking disappear.

😠 Samuel L. Jackson quote: YO! HOLD UP TIME OUT, TIME OUT Y'ALL TAKE A CHILL, YOU NEED TO COOL THAT SHHH OUT AND THAT'S THE DOUBLE TRUTH RUTH.
As an Italian American man, I’ll admit to frequently playing Spike Lee’s Italian tirade at 1:50 as per-workout warmup.
Do ye do the john tutturo one to feel good post wokout
He's 💯 % correct t
Wtf?! 😂
LMFAO
Am I fucked up for thinking that all the insults during the racist rant scene were kind of funny?
They're supposed to be
Cause they’re true
Funny but true
People always would say some 💩 about people not rigth but it happens .
Dude, I'm black and laughed the hardest during the black stereotypes.
Seeing this in the theater in 1989 was an experience. On a big screen, when Lee has the camera push in on the faces of each of the characters (who are all staring right into the lens) at the start of their rant, he is literally pushing those characters and their racism right into your face. I remember my gut reaction was to strain back in my seat as if to escape. I don't know if Lee has ever done a movie as good after this, though I still need to watch many of them (likely starting with X).
He hasn't, trust me.
Malcolm X hits on a different level, so does Crooklyn.
yeah, Malcolm X is GREAT, and Bamboozled is as artistic and thought- provoking as Do the Right Thing imo
crooklyn is a good film also jungle fever.
I remember we saw this in class as part of social studies and this scene had everyone close to tears we were laughing so hard
wow your school was cool
What grade were you in when that happened?
onlyone23km I was a senior in high school
which state is your school in
@strike4able LMFAO the movie is not anti white. There is also no such thing as anti white racism in America, there could be anti white bias and people with such stupid minds but nobody is in power to oppress the white people systematically.
2:31 The actor playing the police officer is Sal's real life son, Rick Aiello. He looks like Sal (Danny Aiello) too.
No....the son who played the cop is Rick Aiello.....Danny Aiello's stunt double in this film is Danny III. Danny III was the one who died of cancer...
@@Sonyag1 : If I'm correct, Rick Aiello is also a movie stuntman, I don't think they're related.
The dialogue with the music is gold! Spike Lee is a genius!

Mike Knight he’s more of a genius than you loser
The scene between John Turturro and Spike Lee is absolutely perfect...and then everything goes off the rails!
This scene still cracks me up to this day
I am shocked at how far we have NOT come in 2016, at least in the 90's we could have a discussion without fear of physical violence. We are way less tolerant than we were when this movie came out.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Exploring racial stereotypes from every angle and POV.
"Take your pizza and go back to africa" I was rolling.
+Chaos the puerto rican so-bah-dum-beech part made me crack up
radiopinkzeppelin2 LOL I love that part .
Khaos I dont
Spike Lee and the Korean dude were hilarious.
15 in a car.
30 in an apartment 👮🏻♂️
You tell them good, Samuel L. Jackson.
Damn, this is a testament to Spike Lee's genius. Verbalizing innermost stereotypical thoughts and racial tensions and who better to shut everyone up than Samuel L Jackson
There's nothing even remotely genius about New York people and their tribal warfare, shouting about nothing. They're all secretly living in New Jersey. Zero class.
Spike Lee's films and his work are consistently overlooked, underrated and ignored. The films are not easy to watch. The films can be funny, but can also make us cringe as we recognize ourselves. Mr. Lee's ability to write people as they are, with humor and truth allowed us to accept Tarantino and the Coen Bros.
Mr. Lee is in the Pantheon of geeat directors. And should be treated as such.
He was definitely brilliant, still is actually. wish he still
made movies like this.
Spike is edgy in a political way.
Pure quintessential auteur vision and execution, on every level pure genius. This particular scene strikes at the root of several varieties of prejudice and renders the living and breathing of a diverse neighborhood during a clearly defined time... with candor defined by actually living there, and is therefore graced to transport us all!~
Y’all done cursed so much even Samuel L. Jackson got uncomfortable 🤣
Spike nailed it. We had a store at 507 Nostrand Ave. from 1948 to 1988. We we're the last of the white Mohicans. Thank God for the Black people that came to our peanut and health food store Traymore Food Shop. Between Fulton and Herkamer St. God Bless that neighborhood. Love Tommy Otis. Thank you.
Back when MJ jokes where about him being a great entertainer not allegations about him :(

Q: What's the difference between Michael Jackson and a shopping bag?
A: One is made of plastic and is dangerous for children to play with, and the other carries

Ah, I love how this is 1989 when things are starting to adopt the more not just sunny, colorful optimism of the 90s but also the more modern and sophisticated look of the 90s as well.
It's weird too because I tend to think of the more dull, dated 70s type 80s look as lasting well into the late 80s but this movie is a reminder of the fact that ain't always the case.
This was the point in that era that things started to look different, even up until 1985/86 that dull look from years before was still there people had feathered hair, members only jackets and looked a certain way and weren't even fading there hair yet, etc. Then just a few years later things changed...
Korean kickboxing, sumarabitch!
I'm so happy I was introduced to this film for my Film Study class!! This movie is classic gold!
Nah the "How im doing" with the 2 thumbs up kills me EVERYTIME 😂😂😂

Samuel Jackson: The Voice of Reason
Gotta love the light sax playing in the background on the conversation...really nice touch here. Don't hear too much of that nowadays
It’s surreal seeing these camera angles on film. It looks like someone with an iPhone traveled back to 1989 to record this footage.
Fun fact: Sal the chubby pizza dude is the blonde cop's father, the blonde cop ranting about the Puerto Rican dude
When the camera dollies in on the ranters but Samuel dollies himself in!
Most of what Pino was saying was compliments lmao
Probably the best scene (after the Love and Hate scene) in this genius work by Spike Lee... the man is an artist.
This is the real America that people in other countries don’t see and when a segment of people that live in America don’t see or want to acknowledge
2022 baby!!! Spike Lee work, I'm here, great memories!!! Do the right thing!!!
Great scene from a great film. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest American films ever made.
Not gonna lie Pino part was the funniest out of all the racial insults hurled.
When the cop was talkin bout Goya Bean eatin, 15 inna car, 30 inna apartment i felt attacked but it was hilarious at the same time 💀

I like this scene before the insults, it's nice seeing Mookie and Pino communicating and talking calm at the start. "Can I talk to you for a second?"
RIP DANNY AIELLO AKA SAL RIP you kill it in the role gonna miss you and Do the rigth thing is a iconic 🎥 if you a new Yorker you understand it better RESPECT SAL
“360 degree” was the one for me. I remember seeing that the first time. I couldn’t stop laughing.

There's stereotypes for a reason, and we ALL need to learn how to laugh at ourselves and our niche within those stereotypes. We laugh because they're funny, and we laugh because they're true.
What they say about 'dark italians'??
Have you ever been to Italy? Italians from Italy don't look that much like "american italians". Italy is a latin european country, cultures over there have always been very mixed. A great part of southern, and also northern parts of italy have had a long long period or arab and middle eastern invasions, and before that where darker then northern europeans already.
