Jim Brown's way of speaking is pure class. How he stayed so calm during all those rude interruptions.. I realized I should be saying more of these 'can I give you my answer?' or 'can I finish?' in conversations, rather than just trying to speak louder. What a legend!
Cavett's show was really ahead of it's time. No cheeseball antics, or attempting to avert people's attention toward a commercial break when things got heated.
How was that ahead of its time when the stuff you're talking about would only become more prevalent in later years. Sounds like the exact opposite of ''ahead of its time''.
@DankBurrito No, desegration was telling black people that people aren't allowed to be discriminated them when applying to a job, work, housing, and benefits because of their skin. And if they were discriminated that they now had the government on their side to help them out
Well, the problem is that back then those blatant statements ought to have the effect you describe much because the way discourse was structured was heavily influenced by where those people were from. So the retoric Maddox uses was effective on certain regions but couldn't stand a chance on the centers of discourse of the time. The far right speakers of today are way more prepared in the art of dressing their arguments as reasonable even on a aesthetic level even because of the progress of mass media so the far-right is way more aware of the retoric employed by their counterparts therefore far more able to hide hideous intents on politeness and skillfull debate. If you look at the way Ben Shapiro or someone (not so relevant right now) Milos Greeksurname frames the conversation you can see the way they bend the argument their way. Anything can sound reasonable if well spoken. Also there's guys like the one that commented before me.
@@matthewalkman3735 Genuine question, not trying to start an argument: Are you also in agreement that segregation should still exist? Given that he was a proponent of segregation, which explicitly separates individuals based on ethnic and cultural backgrounds, I found it odd that Maddox would be opposed to a black man talking about the condition of black people in his country. Why would you be a proponent separating people based on specific characteristics, but then objecting to speaking about their unique needs given a sociopolitical landscape that has treated them differently for hundreds of years on those exact same characteristics?
I love watching the Dick Cavett Show. This show was before my time but it’s so much better than any talk show or late night show on today. This is real discourse, not some stooge and controlled opposition.
Horse hockey. You just like his view more. Maddox was right. The government has no business forcing a POV on anyone. I'm sure that goes against your PC POV but you'll probably live to see why that was a very bad road to go down. Sooner or later your PC friends will try to force their views on everything on everyone and that includes you. Look around. The left is eating its own now. They will come after you eventually. Mao's Cultural Revolution is your example. Your parents don't think right - turn them in so they get murdered by the state. The road you endorse will destroy this country. And I'd bet a dollar to a doughnut they will find some reason to come after you.

Brown has more class in his pinky finger than Maddox ever tried to have in his entire lifetime. Maddox was out-classed 10 to 1 and knew it which is why he kept rudely running his fat mouth.
Jim Brown was in the Army reserves as a second lieutenant and finished his service while playing in the NFL. He could've been called up to serve abroad at any time, luckily he wasn't. So, the as you see fit jibe, was a verbal below the belt cheap shot personal attack on what appears to be a very prominent and honorable person, the Governor of Georgia, and any referree worth being a referree, would deducted a point for such a below the belt cheap shot. Any unbiased observer of facts, in this discussion, would see the Governor was right in what he said and clearly and factually and decisively refuted everything the other guest said, by the boxing analogy you used, it was either a KO or a TKO; when, near the end of this clip the guest; that took repeated swipes at the Governor and repeatedly swung and missed, only to take a hard counterpunch; until he was barely standing up by holding onto the ropes and pleading with the referee or host of the show to end the round; before the inevitable counterpunch could be delivered.

There’s no better argument against a corrupt person than exposing them.
he actually owned Jim Brown. ALL PEOPLE MATTER. Jim wanted to focus on black people.

This is a football player. This was a time were more was expected of black people than to just do what makes them money. He was this intelligent on his own accord. He didn't just stand for the career that paid him and made him famous. He stood for his people. People that didn't pay him a dime to do so. He stood for his people because it was right, not because it was lucrative. And he was extremely aware of how he was precieved by the world and able to articulate himself with power.
And still one of the best backs to ever play the game, fyi.
My God nothing has changed, just getting worse!
& that’s why when he stood by Trump in ‘17 it was earth shattering to Black ppl, especially those fm his era bc he knows America for what it truly is!
I see it differently than you I think.

Yeah, but it was stupid to retreat behind his physicality, and "reputation," just because he was frustrated in the argument. That was disappointing to see Brown lower himself. Lester Maddox, while rigid, was essentially making a solid conservative/libertarian argument that a rising tide lifts all boats. The dumb audience seemed to assume he was racist. The truth is that he rejects intersectional politics and its inherent soft bigotry. There was nothing radical about him except he was a few decades ahead of his time. He makes the kind of argument Thomas Sowell or Rand Paul make.
@@RobertJBarnes Clearly, Mr. Brown was appalled at what he was hearing. If Brown had expressed views of that nature, he would have been incarcerated. It's crazy how the governor is using the same "all people" and "all lives" argument that is being used today.
Maybe there’s something to it… and btw, Lester is a democrat.
Age old trope of racist people
The argument is certainly reasonable in general, but shouldn't be used to undermine the argument or interrupt the discussion about the particular inequality of black people (at the time) and which was at the center of that shows discussion.
It was not clever of Jim Brown to insinuate things about the security guard.
Otherwise however the governor's arguments are all weak.
How can he believe no race is inferior and inequality is cruel yet insist on the freedom of people to avoid living/learning) working with people from another race? He accepts a differentiation where he says he does not want to see one.
He also promotes a freedom of choice that does not exist in equal form for other relationships. If you go to a diner, you get served by the waiter, doesn't matter if you like the waiter. You can choose to go to another diner or not go at all but you do not choose the waiter and less on reasons of race.

I thought the same as soon as he spoke it !
No, it is about the constitution and laws that are made that are consistent with the constitution; that the Governor was rightly advocating for. So, the as you see fit jibe, was a verbal below the belt cheap shot personal attack on what appears to be a very prominent and honorable person, the Governor of Georgia, and any referree worth being a referree, would deducted a point for such a below the belt cheap shot. Any unbiased observer of facts, in this discussion, would see the Governor was right in what he said and clearly and factually and decisively refuted everything the other guest said, by the boxing analogy you used, it was either a KO or a TKO; when, near the end of this clip the guest; that took repeated swipes at the Governor and repeatedly swung and missed, only to take a hard counterpunch; until he was barely standing up by holding onto the ropes and pleading with the referee or host of the show to end the round; before the inevitable counterpunch could be delivered.

cacable7 you are so right I believe we as blacks do want what benefits us and our own er thang and initially see whites as racist at first glance when they do the same. Still you have to realize that this country is predominantly white based white washed the media is mostly white I turn my tv on mostly white all the money white so yes we want our own image own likeness
@cacable7 your argument is so weak and indefensible that the example you use defeats itself. You are using what MLK Jr said against the "all people" stance that the governor displays in this video. You can't be that uneducated that you think that MLK never talked about black people. So it can't be a surprise to you that he got hit with the "why do you talk about all people instead" response in the way Maddox used it to attack Jim Brown. You know MLK didn't support the position you are trying to defend. So don't use his words to defend thinly vieled racism.
cacable7 according to my research this country was in fact all brown and black before colonialism. Blacks were everywhere even here not just Africa. African Americans have been pursuing an erased history identity culture language and more ever since colonialism domination and slavery which was in large done by whites conquest. I don’t wish to remove whites & im perfectly fine with whites having there own they already do (America). Also nor did I say such so acknowledge that. My children need to see images of people who look like them so they can emulate their own race and stop trying to emulate images of other races learn self sufficiency the same way Chinese Japanese do.
White people love talking bout stop blaming white people, y'all study history all the damn time, but once it comes down to slavery, and the white roadblock technique they use, mfs forget, and never did shit
