I wonder how many people realize how little Judy Garland was carrying the weight of this show almost all by herself. You take her out of the equation and what do you have then? She was the goose who could lay the golden eggs for CBS and they treated her like some old chicken in the rain. As I watch this (#24) I think it was one of her best shows.
It’s heartbreaking to watch her still singing her heart out, smiling, etc. for the audience after she’d been told she was canceled. What she had counted on to get her stable financially for her and the children for the first time in years. She hadn’t even been able to afford clothes for Lorna and Joey, was staying at different people’s places once the house was taken where she hadn’t even been able to pay the electric bill. It just seems someone could’ve gotten her a property and paid her household expenses; the woman didn’t live extravagantly. Her children and a few involved in the show said the cancellation was the end of her. The difference in her physically from the first shows to the end is stark; she seemed to age years and, frankly, she took on the look of a heavy drinker, like how she looked when she sang Battle Hymn.

Judy’s version of I Love You is so much better than Bing’s. The way she goes into “It’s spring again and birds on the wing again” gives me goosebumps. The beauty and power of that tone could make a grown man cry. *Can you think of another singer/entertainer- before, during or after Judy - who makes eye contact with people in the audience? I can’t. They all stare out into space or over people’s heads, making no personal connection with the audience through gestures, only occasional words, and any smiles are related to their own joy of singing/songs.
Judy is such a great story teller through her singing. I also love the designs of what she wears. Such classic sense of fashion beauty. Wow! Watching her completely capture her audience for hours is astounding. How many entertainers exist who can mesmerize their audience like Judy? I hadn't known how many songs Barbra Streisand has sung that were first sung by Judy. I now see how much Judy has influenced Barbra.

What a great thing that this wonderful show didn't GET AWAY!!! I love them all, but as far as vocals, song choices, and outfit, # 24 is my absolute favorite of all shows. I watch it a whole lot....it's so good.

I have been so happy to have this television series available to watch as much as I want. Given that apparently the tapes were MIA for several years and were not given any special care during that time, it is amazing that they are in such great shape. I really hate that having this show get canceled by the network was such a devastating blow to Judy. Although I agree with what Cyd Luft said about it may have worked better to have Judy do a number of BIG specials per year, but not 1 hour per week, I am so thankful that she did the show. In as far as having this many hours of her ripeness as a performer captured wonderfully in big-budget studio productions for each show...I am one of the few people that liked each version of the format and incarnation that TJGS went through. I thought that Judy's amazing multi-talents were spotlighted throughout, It is a FABULOUS gold mine and something I would never have been as enriched not having these great shows that captured lots of Judy Garland performing at the zenith of her career. I am so glad that you mentioned Mort Lindsey. I absolutely love how his wonderful talent went hand in glove in each song. There were also lots of talented singers, dancers, musicians, and guests on TJGS. I have heard that her children say that the show was able to capture a little of what Judy was like as a person outside of performing. The show was canceled about a year before I was born. I guess for me, The Judy Garland Show is a gleaming moment that was thankfully captured and has been available to appreciate its many wonderful aspects for a few years now. With all of its wonderfulness, who wants to talk about any of the negatives???? I'm thrilled to connect with a kindred spirit.

As you mentioned, we came very close to losing all the master 2 inch videotapes which were returned to Judy's production company when the series ended. CBS kept film copies of a few of the shows, but the 26 master tapes were transported across America from one address to another and kept in less than ideal storage conditions. Then for several decades they were lost - nobody knew where they were, until they came to light as a result of a house clearance in the mid 90s. They were found in a dank dirty cellar. The boxes were falling apart and it's a miracle the tapes were even playable. Fortunately Pioneer DVD took on the massive task of restoring all 26 shows, which took 4 years from 1999 to 2003. Watching these shows today in their pristine quality and condition, you'd never guess what a miracle it is that they have even survived.

In USA they are masters in creating enormous talented personalities of showbiz and then exploit them till the very sad end and cry a river over them afterwards... Split personalities are those of Americans not of yours Judy... though you said that you have split personality during the last appearance on the 28th of March 1964. Gemini ? Americans used the name for their Fly me to the Moon mission program in 1960's. Life is amazing in its beauty and absurdity... isn't it ?

At 1:27:52 is Bobby Cole, whom Judy employed for 3 reasons. Firstly, she needed a special material writer after she fired Mel Torme; secondly, she wanted to show Torme that a piano bar performer she picked up in NY could do the egotistical Torme's job; thirdly, after going through a few lovers during her series (David Begelman, Andre Philippe, Glenn Ford), she not only hooked up with Cole, but had him leave his wife to come out to L.A. As is apparent here, Mr. Cole is an acquired taste. Monsieur Philippe- oo-la-la!- was from... where else?... the Bronx.

What an amazing voice Vic Damone had, but the chemistry isn’t really there between them. Judy keeps looking to him and he ignores her most of the time. She was an awesome storyteller, and could connect with another singer in a duet like no other - from Barbra Streisand to Mickey Rooney, Martha Raye to Lena Horne & Tony Bennett. She was generous and brought out the best performances in others. Closing my eyes Vic was lovely, but sorry to say he missed opportunity after opportunity to engage with Judy.
Judy and Vic knew each other as far back as their MGM days. Vic was the only guest during the entire series to appear three times, probably because Judy felt so comfortable with him. After the series, Judy and Vic recreated their West Side Story duet on the Hollywood Palace.

As an aficionado of Judy and her great great admirer, fan etc I must admit that never has I predicted that I would find similarities between me and her with all due admiration and respect to Judy's class, magic, talents, hardship and beauty. Pretentious... I know... sorry. Anyway 22th of June 1969 is the day when the world stopped revolving. "Judy had a heart bigger than all of you put together".- once said Judy's long time friend June Allyson. Bingo ! Heart plus talent, grace and hard work made her an absolutely and uniquely one of the most amazing human beings that had ever lived on Planet Earth.

It's only had one complete series release, and that was about 20 years ago, and long out of print. I don't know whether it will ever get released again - possibly not, as the DVD market is in decline.

Wow! Vic Damone was the perfect duet partner for Judy. Their duets together singing were sheer pure artistic bliss.
I saw Judy perform live many times. She is and always will be the greatest entertainer ever.

Vic Damone was in velvet voice; our mother's favorite crooner of the late 50's-60's.
