      And directed by a Canadian, Norman Jewison, who learned his craft on Canadian television before moving into the motion picture world. Mr. Jewison has a wonderful story in his autobiography "This Terrible Business Has Been Good To Me" about Judy, whose television show was being messed with by CBS, receiving a message that she had called him to try and get him to help her right the ship. What is so interesting is simply that the man was on an isolated island on one of Canada's many small lakes and he was blown away that she could even track him down, given that there were no telephone lines to the island.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle 3 года назад +1

      @@gordjackson9650 Norman tried his best and promised to help Judy get her series renewed, but it didn't work out. She based her faith in him on their successful collaboration at the time of the blockbuster 1962 special. It beat out Bonanza and got such raves that CBS even repeated it after a short time. I know because I watched it twice... that's how old I am. But the 1963 Judy was very different from her 1962 self. After, I believe, 6 shows, Norman quit- it was prearranged- for him to direct Doris Day in a terrific comedy, "Send Me No Flowers." It's always been my opinion that Judy should have been a talk show hostess, used her razor-sharp wit and sung occasionally.

      @laserluver1 2 года назад

      @@StevenTorrey I have heard Frank's music from every stage of his career for all of my life. No diss to his early years but most people would say that Sinatra's greatest years as a recording artist came after the Dorsey years. Most of his most memorable hits and record sales came after those years too. By the 50's and 60's, Sinatra's voice had developed and ripened like a fine wine. At that point, he could really sing torch songs like no one else could and one of the reasons was that he was old enough to have lived what he was singing about.

    • @StevenTorrey
      @StevenTorrey 2 года назад +2

      @@StevenTorrey Absolutely. Riddle was indispensable to Sinatra during those years. I grew up in the 60's so I was more into the Beatles and rock and roll music but my parents were of the WWII generation and they adored Sinatra. Over the years, some of that rubbed off on me and I was eventually able to appreciate Sinatra's artistry and genius. I don't think there was ever a greater interpreter of the American songbook than Sinatra.

      Dean had a very relaxed sound that went with his personality. Frank was more the Type A, leader of the Pack. Deano always acted like singing was a hobby while Frank took it more seriously. Sinatra had a little danger associated with him both from his “connections” and his volatile temper. Dean kept up the good time drinker routine.
      Listening to a Dean Martin album today is a much different experience than a Sinatra album. They both have their place.

      Think that was something the media back them pushed ,read she was relatively happy as much as one can be in a sortof abnormal system , as happy and probably happier than any of the back then stars , her downfall was that since childhood the studios that tried to control her Criminally put her on drugs diet and sleeping pill drugs since a pre teen child and so that hurt her on the end - but it seems that naturally she was a type A personality always on the go and with her great talent and imposed upon addiction ,well..but Judy Garland remains one of the greatest stars ever if not the greatest movie stars ever .

MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT IF HER DAD HADN'T DIED, HE WOULD NEVER ALLOWED ANYONE TO DO THE THINGS TO HER THAT THEY DID. HER MOM WANTED TO BE FAMOUS, AND THE ONLY WAY THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, WAS IF JUDY BECAME FAMOUS, WHICH SHE MOST CERTAINLY DID. MOM SACRIFICED HER DAUGHTER, SO SHE COULD BE SOMEBODY FAMOUS, and being the mother of the most talented teenager in the world is just what momma wanted. AT ANY COST.

    I was 4 years old, but I think I remember this on the set one weekend night when I was at my aunt's and grandparent's ole home up in Kensington they were babysitting me which they often did on a weekend if my folks had gone out. And you see I do remember my dear good ole (spinster) Aunt Betty use to always watch that CBS Judy show as she was a big fan of Judy Garland and avid concert, symphony and opera goer. She use to take me and my cousin to sometimes. One of our favorites was the good ole Starlight Opera in Balboa Park here in San Diego. She never married but she was instrumental in instilling some very artistic culture in me and my cousin lives and I'll never forget her. Sadly she passed only two years after her 30 years retirement from Head Librarian for the SDUSD, and just one month after returning from a trip to Europe .. of lung cancer. 😢
    Well, I was very very very fortunate to grow up Merrill/Boysen period. Very good folks couldn't find any better. So why am I going on about my family? Partly cuz I miss them so terribly. And partly it's because of them I was brought appreciating such great talent and artist such as Judy Frank and Dean, and so many others from back in those few magical decades from the 50s and 60s. I just watched It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World and check the cast of that 1963 movie out to give an idea of the talents I got to grow up appreciating as well, and even more, too many to list but anyone my age will understand where I'm coming from.

    This was a time when TV was still quite a new medium. So it was novel and innovative and they tried new ways of entertaining and bringing in film actors and singers from the studios... so they brought the glamour of the big screen to the small screen and it worked. It's hard to reproduce this now because tv is no longer "new." The other factor is the "cool" and hip factor of these 3 performers: each of them was always hip. And that's what translates across the generations. Each of them was an idol to teenagers in their day. Especially Judy and Frank. And it's this teen idol magic that rubs off on them even in their mature years. They can swing, they can rock, they can jive, they can do blues, big band, pop, and even light classical. It's their range that makes them cool and also of course the way they dress, posture, swagger and bring confidence to the performance. Very often performers these days seem to think that being fakely "unconfident" and falsely modest is a draw are but it just makes you look unpolished. Judy, dean and frank were polished and professional yet still retained a kind of youthful heart.

      Wether it was digitally remastered or not, I think it needs to be returned to its original sharp black and white because the colorization is awful never mind that the picture is also fuzzy, washed out and flat.

    Yes, I'd say it's pretty clear she's one of the better interpreters of the American Song Book. And, of course, Ella's part of that conversation too.

    • @thomasleary2814

    • @stmichl9433

      Thomas Leary Judy is better than Ella and in fact all of them put together. Better even than Michael Jackson. No one - neither black nor white - come close to Judy. Many people can sing but it's not just about voice and vocals, it's about presence, energy, phrasing, posture, kinaesthetics and heart.

      Terry Smith that’s a shame. Ella would have been her great self and Judy, who always acknowledged and adored other true talents, would have done nothing but show support. And make her feel at ease; like so many anxious people she understood and it served her and others well to assuage other’s anxieties.
