- The Judy Garland Show ran for one series of 26 shows on US TV CBS from 29 September 1963 until 29 March 1964. The format was changed several times, and 3 different producers were hired. The last 7 shows (numbers #20 to #26) were just 'Judy in concert' music shows, the variety / comedy elements having been dropped.
This video is a double billing of 2 of the 'concert' shows, #21 and #22.

This Amazing lady just has to walk on stage and you know that she’s the greatest entertainer in history! Such a legacy she left all of us. Even Liza can’t eclipse her mother. Judy had a natural singing voice which proves that it was a gift from God. Many greats have sung the same songs but NONE of them ever touched their audiences the same way Garland could and still does. I really pray that she is in heaven because one day, I would love to meet her. ❤️

My mom took me to a matinee at our Curran Theatre in San Francisco. I was ten and just starting to really sing. My idol was Judy. It's the only time I ever saw
her and it was worth every penny and more. She was a terrific entertainer & her show was full of wonderful song and dance numbers. I will never forget the clown segment, where she sang and danced "Be a Clown" winding up sitting on the stage and she sang "Born in a Trunk" finishing up singing Over the Rainbow
in her tramp costume which made it even more poignant. What an entertainer! Thanks Mom.

I agree with you but sadly I don't think she is generally credited for her technical excellence, largely because she made everything seems to spontaneous and 'in the moment' - truly a phenomenal performer!

I'm grateful to whoever posted this and all the Judy Garland show episodes. I'm 64 years old and she inspired me since I first saw her in The Wizard of Oz. She was simply...genius!
Show 21 was one of the very best in the series. In particular Judy's rendition of 'Come Rain or Come Shine' is awesome, but there are so many wonderful performances by her on this episode. And she wore the iconic 'poppy dress'!
I think all the concert shows (20-26) were superb - I also like shows 1 through 5, and 11 with Steve Allen. My God what a talent she was! I'll pas on the Jerry Van Dyke routines. LOL

I was 9 when Judy's show aired. I was transfixed in front of that big black and white TV when she sang to my heart and soul. Bonanza? Sorry Little Joe. Judy won my heart.

I was 11 or 12 when Judy's show aired. I never missed one. I remember we watched it every week and I cried when it was canceled. I just lovd seeing her sing every week. She was and is the best. I wish she had lived a happier life.

I know Lucille and Judy were colleagues and MGM friends, but I doubt Lucille- who was quite busy in 1963 and 1964 with her own show, as well as CEO of Desilu, was frequently in Judy's audience. It occurred to me that Lucille Ball would have made a perfect guest on Judy's show, but Ball was the epitome of professionalism. On time, prepared, and wouldn't tolerate anything less from others. Another MGM colleague, Red Skelton, would have also made a great guest- imagine him and Judy as clowns. But that never materialized, maybe for the same reason.
@@akrenwinkle With all due respect "the of us will be forgotten; never Judy"- Sinatra once said. I couldn't agree more on that. June Allyson - a friend of Judy said that it must have been like that at the very end. The enormous talent of Judy just had eaten her to the bones... sleeping pills just added fuel to Judy's demise.
@@WitoldBanasik I'm not sure what you're replying to. I was just focusing on why Ball and Garland, both MGM alumnae and CBS stars at the same time, never worked together. Plus Red Skelton... now that would have been unforgettable. I'm aware of the Sinatra quote, I don't know how it started, but these things take off on the internet and don't go away. I assure you, Frank Sinatra, not shy in the ego department, ever thought he'd be forgotten, and he was right.

@@WitoldBanasik Well, I certainly can't argue with that quote. Because I don't know who the fuck "son" is whom Elvis is addressing, or who "that man" is. Or what it has to do with anything.
This is singing seemingly stripped of artifice and the results are just beautiful. The phrasing, timing, musicality, emotion and depth of the lyrics- in other hands could feel forced- but Judy lives every single moment. These type of recorded shows would never happen nowadays.

I used to watch every one of her shows in the two-season when I was a little boy. I'm glad that all her two seasons and her Xmas special and her special with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are preserved in the original format.

Well, I am pretty sure it was aired in color. They taped it in black and white obviously. The first Judy TV Show back in 1962 was aired and even taped in color... so the technology was already well in place even those days. Cheers ! p.s. Though I'm still not certain whether or not there were Color TV sets available back in 1962-1964. I don't think so. Correct me if I am wrong...

Then Bill Paley the head of CBS was too skinflint cheap to pay for color production - he was trying to claw back some of that $1,000,000 by cutting corners.
NBC had the #1 rated program on Sundays, Bonanza, in COLOR in the same time slot as competition to The Judy Garland Show.

@@WitoldBanasik The 2 inch Ampex video master tapes, from which the show was aired, are in black and white. The 1963 season was 2 years too early for color taping, for CBS.
@@rharvey2124 The number one show that season was CBS's b&w The Beverly Hillbillies. Judy's production company was paid $140,000 for each episode, but of that amount, Judy was responsible for paying staff, musicians, guests, agents, sets, costumes, dancers, and on and on. She could keep what was left, whatever her management didn't steal, but there was a lot of delay and overtime.

Judy was in amazing voice for this show #21! And she seemed less manic than sometimes - wonderful to see and hear her look so healthy. Beautiful Diahann Carroll sounds much like Barbra here!

Judy is practically a religion now with me, she runs that deep and soars that high with me so I feel like I’ve run out of words trying to adequately express how much I love her. She’s my favorite singer and all together she is simply untouchable for the rest of time.
With that being said, Diahann Carroll... hot jumping Jesus on roller skates, that woman can SANG. Where have I been all this time that I haven’t checked her out before? DAMN. I must remedy that.

When sweet Judy sings "Smile", then follows that with "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", her tender voice kisses my soul over and over and over💞...I believe she is receiving all the love, of which she was deprived of in this life and more in God's presence. How I love her 💘.

She’s just fantastic. She needs no extravagant sets or anything of the sort. Just her voice is enough. Has anyone thought that this was the last real high or her career? It was a highlight on her whole life, biggest movies, and I think mostly “Judy at Carnegie Hall”
I love watching these old TV shows of Judy. I'm glad they ditched the variety comedy portions and just went to a concert format.
The ratings went up when they switched to the all music concert format for the last 7 shows. But by then CBS had cancelled the show, and it was too late. These concert shows are timeless.

Judy Garland was no crooner. Home girl was a show singer with "SOUL", and Before Aretha Franklin, Barbra Striesand, Tina Turner, and the list goes on and on Judy Garland was the only woman singer of her time that could compete with her male crooner contemparies and blow them to dust with her raw, fat, huge, and beautiful vocals.
Agreed... Judy's voice matured and changed as other legendary divas do... even faster and more deeper due to her tough life, overworking and overdose of many different harmful substances.
She could never get back in time and sing some of her epic songs from 1930-1940's in 1960's.
Nobody ever sang so marvelously as she did as a child and teenager.
That's life. No more Blues in the night or The joint is really jumping down at Carnegie Hall...well, in 1964.
But dramatically with the vocal arrangement of both Kay Thompson and Mel Torme and the orchestration by Mort Lindsay she was on different planet with Come rain or come shine and Stormy weather or even Smile and If love were all in 1964. Pure genius... very intelligent and very kind, subtle human being...
Aretha said once that Judy ABSOLUTELY had soul!

Actually we did deserve her talent. Judy wanted & needed us to share her love right from the start...(Movies, Recordings Radio, TV, ) In many ways she is still with us. x
In her entire life, she was never addressed as Ms. Garland, nor referred to as Ms. Garland. But I think it's cute when kids write things like, "You're my inspiration, Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt," or "Thank you for our flag, Ms. Betsy Ross."

Had CBS allowed this to remain on is it possible Judy may have got better mentally and physically . I think it looks very well done plus she looks amazing , costumes , hair, makeup all perfect . In a few short years her decline was so so sad . Would this have been a positive in her life instead of running around the globe tiring herself .

I feel exactly the same. Had her show been continued her life would have turned out completely different.

i loved her since Wizard of Oz days and through 50-60s also, yet simply didn't realise all the demons she was losing to, ending up pennyless, so many people lived off her as an income, ignoring her needs as a person to simply live, but keeping in mind her drug indoctrination by Hollywood, she was simply a kid trying to deal with adult issues. Thankfully times have/are changing to the point its obvious when people have issues. What a massive difference between 64 to 68. Its almost like it finally hit her health wise in 68, all the yrs of abuse. Such a waste of a beautiful talented person. Then again the brightest lights burn out faster.
It makes me very sad when I learned what happened to her in the 64-69 span. It's as though all the drug abuse seemed to catch up with her overnight, and there was nothing to do about it. That, and CBS' really shabby treatment of her during the series run. But when I watch her at her peak, as in these concert shows, she just takes my breath away with her talent and soul. I sure hope she is happy and at peace now.
I agree... I'd like only say that it was not for the Beatles invasion on USA in Fab. 1964 what brought on the cancellation of Judy's iconic CBS production... though one might have found some relation...
Anyway there were Her infamous greedy and silly mother, business agents, Her third tough man/husband Sid Luft and MGM boss Louis B. Mayer who hand in hand, step by step, drop by drop stole Judy's money and made Her fixed to all those horrible sleeping pills related problems.
Judy must have been sent from above the rainbow. I'm sure She is back over there while having a ball with Her friends: Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Frank Sinatra, Mickey Rooney, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Charlie Chaplin, Lena Horne, and many others... I'll be there to meet you my Angel... sooner or later. Promise !!!!

As talented as Judy was, I don’t think she actually held that note for that length of time: I’d say a bit of technical trickery was involved to make it seem so.

I was a Big Fan of Judy, especially having seen "The Wizard of Oz" on TV many times as a kid. Eventually her other Teen-years movies would be shown on TV in the 1960's, including multiples with Mickey Rooney.
Judy was married multiple times, including for awhile to Music Composer / Conductor David Rose. I started College in 1965, and in my 1st semester became good friends of a student who was a Cousin to David Rose! By that time Judy and David had divorced. But my friend (family Name of GRUNES - pronounced Grew-ness) used to brag about how Judy had been his Cousin via Marriage. My friend had even seen one of Judy's last performances in NYC, and Loved Her, despite her cracking voice. Little did either of us know at that time that Judy was My Blood Cousin! My friend deceased w/o me ever getting to brag about that.
As it turns out Mickey Rooney, who was married more times that Judy, was also my cousin, and was married, for awhile, to my cousin Ava Gardner!
In time, Judy would have her 3 children on her Show.
In this 1st show, Judy's Guest Diahann Carroll, had 4 husbands, an affair with Actor Poitier (Diahann divorced her 1st husband so she could marry Sidney; Sidney later divorced his wife for Diahann; but they did not then marry), and was engaged to News Interviewer David Frost. Diahann dumped David for the man who would become her 2nd husband.
David had many women, but married only 2. 1st wife was the widow of my cousin Peter Sellers (Comic Actor). 2nd wife was my distant cousin.
I was about 18 yrs. old when "THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW" aired, I never missed a show ... she always memorized me, CBS cancellation was a very big mistake fans like myself tried to stop cancellation by write ins to no avail. So now these wonderful shows remind us that JUDY GARLAND was a truly Great SINGER that ALWAYS gave her best to her audience and made millions for bosses and advisors only to be left with back taxes. Again a perfect example of the law prosecuting the wrong person taking her home was unjust, and then the government took about a half a million dollars LIZA MINNELLI paid ... willingly ... FOR her mother's back taxes after her death. There should have been government investigations of who was in charge of MISS GARLAND"S finances and those people should have been charged and arrested for obstruction of paying taxes. With all these great, great examples of JUDY SINGING there should have been more new CD'S for her fans and CAPITAL RECORDS would be a little bit better off as a record seller. And JUDY'S version of "Come Rain Or Come Shine" is a master piece that can't be equaled and ROSEMARY CLOONEY can't compete although she was a good SINGER even FRANK SINATRA couldn't out sing JUDY'S version of "CROCS" although he tried gallentally but unsuccessfully to equal her version. THANKS FOR POSTING "THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW" for her old and new fans to enjoy. And what happened to JUDY'S new unfinished CD?

My sister tells me that the blonde with the tall hairdo is my mother's Aunt Cora. (34:50) Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She's lovely, and she might be- unnamed- in the Sanders book about the making of Judy's series. In Sanders' account, it didn't escape Judy's notice that Mel was an obnoxious wolf determined to "nail" a certain blonde dancer who was very young and starting out. I believe it. As much as I admire Mel's musicianship, unless everybody's lying, he was an awful person.
@@akrenwinkle People in "show biz" are known to stray off the straight and narrow. Many lack moral principles. Whenever I read or hear stories about someone becoming a drug addict, alcoholic (or worse) I think of those activities as coping mechanisms when dealing with the barracudas ready to "chow down" on them. Child stars often grow up with emotional problems. About Mel -- I only looked at him as some guy singing a song. I had no interest in him as a person. His persona was like a smiling cardboard figure.

@@davidvanhouten5576 95/96. Her co star was Rex Smith. They were both excellent. It's not my favourite show though. Was more impressed with the incredible staging and sets. A few good songs. Diahann seemed to have little to do other walk up and down the stairs in every scene!

Judy was already a wreck by this time in her career...at least you think that. Then you see and hear her rendition of "Smile" early in this video. It's one of the most beautiful vocals ever to come out of a human being's mouth.
When I listen to Judy sing “ Smile”, I can hear my mom singing it too. God she loved that song. She had a damn good voice and would often sing it to me, a five year old, imitating Judy’s rendition. She would sing all of them. I didn’t appreciate it, because I was nuts about “ The Fab Four”.
