    I'm getting ready to swap out the engine for a low milage replacement I was able to find. I'm pretty confident about the process but have a few questions about disconnecting the engine from the transmission - rear wheel drive. I see that you didn't pull them together, so I assume it's easier to leave the transmission in place. Any advise on accessing the top few bolts that hold the two together? Also, did you support the transmission with anything when removing the engine? Thanks for any tips on separating the engine from the transmission!

    • @golfghoul7
      @golfghoul7  4 года назад +2

      it is easier that way as you see, not sure about what set up you have ...as far as the top bolts. hard to get to obviously, swivel sockets long extension, one guy from bottom, one on top, call me at the above number I will be at the shop after 12 noon today

      @@golfghoul7 Thank you for the tip! I just needed to be patient with the four top bolts and team up like you mentioned. All the others (and fly wheel bolts) where easy to access. Engine separated from the transmission with no issues. Again, much appreciated!

    ah well there you go I'm a week older and wiser now and have sorted my issue and successfully rebuilt engine for future reference or if anybody else needs to know turns out you do need to at least split engine from gearbox so may as well remove engine entirely to remove sump as main sump has a flange going into the bellhousing that prevents the sump dropping straight down those crafty Koreans sure do like to make things tricky

    @golfghoul7 - What is the pulley between the Harmonic Balancer and the Alternator? I turned on my 04 Sorento EX (155K miles) yesterday, and one of the pulley's squealed so bad and long, that smoke came out from under the hood. Sure enough, the belt snapped on the DRIVER-SIDE of the engine; it was definitely the idler-pulley between the AC Compressor and Harmonic Balancer. I'm going to replace both idler-pulleys along with that other pulley myself, and so it leads me to this question. I think that pulley between the HB and ALT is the Tensioner Pulley? Correct me if I'm wrong.
    Great breakdown video! I know it's 7 years old, but it's still very informative.

    I will not ever buy another Korean car, ever. The maintenance / labor work is over 8hrs and they make their cars so that KIA customers can't work on them at home, more like pay out your ying yang for labor at the dealers, which I will not do and haven't. Like you say, very tight space to work with when changing parts.

    • @Restrictted
      @Restrictted 8 лет назад +1

      that's not true. it takes about 2hrs the person your having switch out your engine or whoever gave you that quote is incorporating the cost of the car sitting in there space. I didn't take my engine out of my car but digging threw(taking the car apart piece by piece) doesn't take long either. as I stated before the person offering you to fix your car is overcharging you. ask them questions like why does it take so long, how will it affect your other customers, when would you actually start fixing my car. this is the truth not that it will take a crazy amount of time.

    • @golfghoul7
      @golfghoul7  8 лет назад +3

      dont know where you got that figure but according to Alldata the labor data base, swapping of engine WITHOUT transferring any parts is rated at 7.2 hours of labor, in this case, alternator, power steering pump, brackets, air conditioning compressor and throttle body had to be transferred to the replacement engine bringing the labor total to 11.3 hours, if YOU can swap an engine in two hours, I have a position waiting for you in my shop

    • @Restrictted
      @Restrictted 8 лет назад +1

      golfghoul7 while the two hours part is exaggerated a bit my point was that the shop he/she is going to is overcharging her. Also that data is based on a two person swap and not a team(4 or more) of professionals. The more people watching and helping the faster it can be done. I am basing my idea of this matter on racing teams that swap parts in milliseconds, but then again who am I, I never swapped an engine out before.

      WELL THE KEY WITH ANY CAR IS MAINTENANCE, change your oil regularly and make sure your fluids (transmission, power steering, radiator coolant, differential fluid if so equipped) are checked on a regular basis and changed on a regular basis, i will let you in on an industry secret, those of us who are in the auto biz change our oil every 3,000 miles with conventional oil and 6,000 miles when we use synthetic oil, we change all the fluids mentioned above every 30,000 miles and we do not wait for a belt or hose to break, we change beforehand and we buy good (hi test/premium) fuel
