  • Removal and replacement of crank sensor on a 2004 S 55 AMG. In the video at first I called it a cam sensor I do correct myself. Wasn’t too bad of a job kind of difficult to see the bolt, removing the surge tank definitely helped.

Agree with you about the bolt being on the side we can't see. I actually ended up doing it by feel. I wasn't really seeing what I was doing. I could see the sensor and fortunately there's nothing else next to it to get confused about what I was touching. I replaced my sensor on my 2001 CLK 55 AMG. I could barely see the sensor. At least the connector was easy to pull off. Unusual for a plastic clip. After experimenting with different extensions and u-joints. I even tried a flexible extension. But finally I used a 1/4 ratchet with a two inch extension plus the socket. I loosen the bolt with the ratchet and finished loosening the bolt with only the extension and socket. I was able to squeeze the bolt to the socket and get the bolt out. The sensor came out easily. I superglued the socket and bolt together. Once I got the bolt started I tightened it. I wiggled the socket until the superglue cracked apart so I could get my socket off.

It's even worse on a right hand drive, completely covered in wires as the ECU and battery are around the other way😂.
    Thanks for the video

Did you do a video on camshaft?

I noted you have 200K miles on your S55. I see that the car has ABC suspension. How many tandem pumps have you had to change out? How many hydraulic hoses/lines have you
replaced? I'm impressed with the miles. I know you do all the work on the car.
I have an R230 with 100K miles. I've done the required maintenance but don't know how long I can expect the hoses and the tandem pump to hold up.

I've never replaced the pump but have rebuilt the valve block, all the accumulators, and most of the hoses. Car is running great.

That's encouraging to know about the pump. I have replaced my accumulators but am uncomfortable about the hoses. As a follow-up question, did one or more of your hoses fail, or did you decide to replace them because they were obviously leaking or weeping? @@ProjectShopFl

@@billtimmins1880 All the hoses I replaced failed and blew out. so I am in the process of replacing them all. they are all original and should have been replaced years ago.

Thanks for your comment. Your business has a lot of machines powered by hydraulics so I'm sure you are able to deal with the car hose issues. My plan is to check the hoses on my car every year so I have some advance notice of coming problems. I only drive the car about 1000 miles per year because of insurance limitations.@@ProjectShopFl

I did the sensor replacement today on my Mercedes Benz with the M113 engine. Do you know how many miles your car's crankshaft position sensor lasted before it failed? I think mine was original and my car would randomly cut off when it reached temperature. I replaced my sensor failed at 105,000 miles.

I think for the most part everything was all original. I changed it around 200,000 miles

do you think it might be easier to access from underneath? Im thinking of jacking up the car and get to it on driver side.

I don't think so I think I looked and it looked like the exhaust was in the way buy that was a while ago and I'm fat so it might work for you. lol

Hey, did the crank sensor solve your issue with random shut off? I just bought a crank sensor myself hoping it will help this random shut off issue. Thanks for the video!

Yes. When the car was cold it would run fine, when it got to temp it would randomly shit off. Its been running great since I changed the sensor.
