Probably because the US was obliterating international competition with nothing more than their college players for decades. That argument was settled on the court in Olympics after Olympics, and when the Soviets started wrecking everyone in the 80s with pseudo-professional players like Sabonis, the US sent their best in 1992 and destroyed teams by an average of 40 points a game.
Talent isn't the reason to be called "World Champion". Why does NBA, NFL have "National" in the names? They are domestic competitions, that's what people keep forgetting. The definition of World Champion "is generally an international competition open to elite competitors from around the world, representing their nations, and winning such an event will be considered the highest or near highest achievement in the sport, game, or ability." The major sports in United States and Canada are domestic leagues than represent the city they are based in not a country, of course our talent base will always be higher than everyone else no doubt. But as long as the league is "National" they are a "National Champion".
The real issue is the title of the league...the NBA is NOT a domestic league. Noah Lyles is spot on. Every American AND pretty much every soccer league in the world pulls players from all over the world just as the NBA does. I don't see us calling the Premier League champion "World Champs"
a) Lyles is 100% correct. Is the NBA the best basktball league in the world? Yes. Are NBA players the majority of the best players in the world? Also yes. Should the NBA champions be refered to as "world champions" absolutely not. If the NBA wants the "world champion" title so much, im sure they can arrange with FIBA an event where thje NBA champs could play against the Euroleagu, South American, Asian, Oceanian and African champions and beat them all to easily tog et the title, but until that tournament takes place they have not earned the right to bare that title. b) imagine being Lyles, wearing the US colours and representing your country in multiple events every year, and people using the same title you EARNED to describe a bunch of dudes who dont even care about their national team...most NBA players (not the international ones obviously), reject the call to be the NT, for lame reasons. I've never heard the UEFA Champions League winners who are arguably the best football/soccer team in the world refer to themselves as World champions, but European champions. In 2010 the NBA Champions and the Euroleague champions played against each other, and the European champions, Barcelona actually beat the Lakers who were fully stacked with Kobe, Odom, Gasol etc. So if the European champions beat the World champions, what does that make them? Hey guys. I'm a European. Icelandic to be exact. We have a sport here that was invented pretty much by the vikings, or at least brought over to Iceland by the vikings that settled Iceland in the 9th and 10th century. It's called Glíma and is a wrestling sport. The people that win this championship each year get to call themselves "íslandsmeistarar" or Iceland champs. Not world champs, or anything beyond our own country. Same goes for EVERY other sport in this country. If you are competing in the championships held in this country, you become the national champs - the Icelandic champs and it's a great honor. Absolutely nobody in the country would dream of calling our national champs anything other then that, NATIONAL CHAMPS! Same goes for other countries in Europe. Lived in Denmark for a few years. The teams winning the sports leagues there were... you guessed it.... NATIONAL CHAMPS. Same goes for the English Premier League of Football/Soccer. The winners there, become champions of.... motherfucking ENGLAND! Not the world! Absolutely no one in England would even think to call them champions of the world. Not a single manchild in England would do so. This is a uniquely US phenomena. I'm sorry you guys have developed a relationship to the term "national" as a college thing and thus can't use that for the more advanced professional championships. You just can't call it World champs as it simply isn't. It isn't just like the Glíma champs in Iceland aren't world champs. It's simple you see. If a competition isn't an international competition, held worldwide with teams from all over the world, it doesn't yield world champions. Period!

People just need to have understanding and do a little research....the world series in baseball is called so because baseball, as an America invented sport, was previously only played in the US and thus the only league. Therefore it held the name the World Series. Baseball is much more wide spread but the mlb like the nba is a global league gathering the world's best for competition
As long as one does not actually organize a world league between local teams (same as Champions league or Europa League in Europe in soccer), NBA calling its Champion 'World Champion' is indeed arrogant. The argument that all the best players in the world go to play in the NBA has no value. All the best soccer players want to play in the Premier league in the UK, the Champion there is not called the World Champion. Valid comment from Noah Lyles.
In order to be a World Champion you have to win a world championship. The NBA should've just called itself "Best league in the world". Which it absolutely, undoubtely is.

That's because basketball wasn't played anywhere but in the US initially, like the mlb (world series was the onky one in the world)...now the nba like mlb is a gathering of the world's best for competition...perhaps there should just be a name change to the leagues because they are in fact very much global leagues that are just sports businesses headquartered in the US. you bring all the best players in the NBA and play another team from Europe or Africa, beat them 500 - 0. Even that won't make you the world champion. To be the wolrd champion you have to play in a NBA world championship or anything. Just like football/soccer world cup. Let Noah be, the man told the truth lol.
Dan, you have to go and learn your history mate. World championships are between nations NOT teams. The best players of each country willing to represent their nation and competing against each other. And by the way, the best players from the Denver Nuggets are not even Americans. How do you know that there isn’t a team anywhere else in the world that could beat the Nuggets? There might be a German team that could beat them. Don’t know where I got that from! Go listen to Steve Kerr after loosing the Semi-finals, the only person in the NBA that seems to understand it’s not 1992 anymore, the fact is, the teams around the world are better, the competition is getting harder, and it’s time for America to realise that they cannot call themselves world champions when they can’t even get a medal in an international competition.
Noah Lyles has a point here The US has the best championship for sure, but in order to be the world champions, you have to go out and play against other countries. Right now, the basketball world championship is going on currently, and there will be a champion at the end of the tournament. It will more likely be USA. At that point, they will be called world champions
In 2010, the Lakers, who were NBA champions, played Barcelona, who were EuroLeague champions. And Barcelona won that game. So yes, there are teams outside of the NBA that can beat the NBA champion. Surely the NBA champion will win 19 out of 20 games against the Euroleague champion, but you can never tell if it is not played.
No wonder USA are soo confused about what gender they are lmao. I don’t even know why this is a debate. It’s the NATIONAL basketball association not the WORLD basketball association
the little league world series champ really IS the best little league team in the world, because all the best teams in the world came and competed in the series.
Yeah that’s why when our really famous athletes travel abroad there are thousands of people outside their hotel rooms just to get an autograph ……stfu 🙄
The LLWS is a setup for the US. It’s not a true world championship unless all of the teams are seeded, and they play an elimination bracket. The US gets a bye into the finals. What would happen if they played, say, Taiwan in the first round?
He's 100% correct. The Premiere League and La Liga are the most internationally diverse in terms of players. Man City and Real Madrid don't call themselves "world champions."
They don't call it world champs because of your second sentence. Jesus. 100% of the best players play in the NBA. There is no great player not in the NBA. The Premier League doesn't have 100% (or even remotely close) of the best soccer players. Hence not a world a championship. The NBA is a world championship.
Only USA thinks this cluelessly, name a other country who does this. All other sports have national, continental, world and Olympic levels for there sport.
The best basketball players in the world play in the nba with almost no exceptions. The US destroys in the Olympics when they bring their stars and it’s not close. There isn’t a team in the world that would be compete with the top stars of US born players.
Still doesn't make them World Champion until they compete for their nation on a global level. World Champion is reserved for the Olympic Basketball Team. NBA, NFL, NHL are National teams therefore can only be crowned National Champs. The best athletes in track n field across the globe attend college and compete. They become National Collegiate Champions. Many go home and compete against us in the Olympics..after I cheered for them in college 😂 Why? Because US has the hardest team to make in Track n field. 9/10 if you win US championship, you will win the World Championship.
Not true. I was in Athens when a team of NBA stars took bronze behind Argentina and umm, Italy? USA's record in Olympics (16 of 20) and World Championships (5 of 18) is far from perfect. Just looked that up BTW . . . did anybody know the basketball world cup is happening right now?
October 7, 2010 LA Lakers 88 FC Barcelona 92 Lakers lineup: Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom FC Barcelona lineup: Ricky Rubio, Juan Carlos Navarro, Fran Vazquez, Terence Morris, Pete Mickeal
Noah Lyles is right. It doesn’t matter if the Denver Nuggets are the best team in the world, they didn’t compete with the rest of the world. If they do and win, they are the world champions. Otherwise they are only the NBA champion. In the 90s the Italian football/soccer league was the best in the world, with the best players. Nobody called the winner team of Italian league the world champion. Being the best on paper doesn’t mean anything. And by the way, almost every other league on the planer has international players.
May have a point, but it was poorly timed. Cause people arent taking about him winning, they are mostly talking about him taking a shot NBA players without being provoked
But they’re talking. He’s in a sport that rarely gets talked about in the US. Sometimes you gotta bark to be heard. I can’t remember the last time the sport was talked about on Dan Patrick and First Take
Dan Patrick and Team. I think this is awesome to call out what the old media in the USA did. It was arrogant to call the NBA or the baseball MLB champs the world champs. World champs should be reserved for world tournaments and not national championships aka domestic leagues.

@@BossDogg88 I analyzed his statement. He said the thing that hurts him most is when NBA champions call themselves world champs. Why would that hurt him? The NBA is an unrelated sport that has nothing to do with him. No one even asked him about the NBA. He then continued and said “we are the world…We have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA”. All this while sneering and speaking in a dismissive tone. So a track star on the eve of his biggest accomplishment tried to uplift his sport by downing an unrelated sport. Instead of doing the natural thing and letting his accomplishments and performance do that for him. That’s hating man. You may not have the intelligence to actually analyze tone and intent in someone’s words, but the rest of us do. Edit* Your punctuation is horrible by the way. Here’s a tip. Periods mark the end of a complete clause which expresses a complete thought with a subject and a verb. COMMAS on the other hand separates words and clauses in a sentence. So a comma would tie together two related expressed thoughts. It wouldn’t tie together two completely unrelated sentences like you wrote in your answer. Also, one does not capitalize a word that follows a comma. Lastly putting 💯 at the end of a comment doesn’t make it valid or profound. Your point actually has to be those things. Not garbled nonsense.
Lyles is also factually wrong when he suggests that NBA players don’t play against the world. While the NBA may not hold tournaments where they compete against other basketball leagues, but they do in fact compete against them in other instances. If you watch the NBA preseason, you’ll see a few games where NBA teams compete against teams like the Adelaide 36ers, the Shanghai Sharks, Real Madrid etc. These teams are usually the winners of their respective leagues. Yet every year they usually get beaten by NBA teams who play their bench players against them for most of the game. It’s not hard to imagine that in a game where the NBA starters are out in full force, the international teams would lose handily. Secondly the NBA is an international league. The best pool of basketball talent in the world plays in the NBA. This means that the best players both within America and outside of it plays in the NBA. In international competition, the best players on every international squad are NBA players. So NBA players are in fact a global collective and do unlike Noah suggested “play against the world”. They accomplish this by playing against one another. They play against and within the best collection of worldwide talent in basketball. Lastly an NBA championship is the most prestigious title in basketball. The fact that it’s not titled the world title does not in fact take away from its prestige. The NBA champion is a team that is the best within an already elite collective. It’s a given that the NBA champion is the best basketball team in the world. Demeaning the competence and skill of the NBA champions like Noah Lyle tried to do because they don’t in fact play against factually lesser completion in organized international competition is ignorant of the actual reality of the sport of basketball.
The NBA has the best players in the world. If the league didn’t then I’d understand but I have no problem calling nba champions, world champions. There’s a reason why no one called it out before because no one else did either and it’s pretty obvious
All the sports in the US take the best players from every country. Greek freak. Nikola Jokic. They aren’t American. It’s the NBA not the US basketball league. Look up what nba stands for. It just happens to the in the US.

Period!
Much respect to Iceland btw, a beautiful country with great people

He actually makes a totally good point. He's not dissing their achievements, but I feel the same way with baseball having the "World" Series- it's just the US and Toronto!
Remember Noah is the American 200 meter record holder he broke Michael Johnson’s 200 meter record that stood 26 yrs, He ran 1931 to beat 1932
Trust me: Noah Lyles is a much admired athlete in the rest of the world.
In order to be a World Champion you have to win a world championship. The NBA should've just called itself "Best league in the world". Which it absolutely, undoubtely is.
And what’s to stop the Zimbabwe basketball league from calling itself the best league in the world? Nothing at all. There are world cups in sports so you get to find out instead of just having talking heads talk crap.
Noah is spot on. The NBA champions are not world champions.
Waoooooo, every body knows that. Why the clown show by noha? Hope he wins every race.
He absolutely has a point.
Noah is right, his idea is before our very eyes, you cannot play a World Championship without the participation of the World at large,.
People get mad when someone say that. I am from the Caribbean. The Cricket World Cup, Fifa World Cup, the Olympic's. In these sporting events you are competing in a world event. Noah is not wrong.
Noah Lyles has more than “potential,” kiddo. He’s 3-time world champion in the 200 and current 100 champ. He’s also already got multiple Olympic medals and holds the American record in the 200.
The best podcast so far that break down this topic. Guys it’s simple it can’t be world championship if in the NBA they are playing against states and not countries. It doesn’t matter if they used overseas players. It’s like calling nfl football when you hardly kick the ball 🏈. Running ball would be a better name.
Or "Invasion Ball", since that's the type of game, based on Sports science. ("American Rules Rugby" is the absolutely most correct one, though, based on its roots.)

It used to be that the "world champions" of US team sports were the best white guys in America. The US isn't the world. If you're competing against people from outside the US who are representing the US, pay their taxes in the US, make money for US owners and corporations, and have to live in the US for most of the year, that's still not international competition. US Track and Field athletes compete against the rest of the world without as many as those baked-in advantages.
Maybe since Kenya and Ethiopia have the best marathoners, the marathon world championships shouldn't bother to invite other countries.

Noah is not wrong... America often gets a pass on their national championships passing off as world championships. The World Cup is a different story the nations of the world compete, the NBA only recently has blended international players into its rosters. But they've ALWAYS called their national championships WORLD championships. Track & Field has its national championships as a precursor to the greater and more prestigious world championships. Soooo Noah's not wrong.
If the hang up is merely because they aren't literally playing against teams assembled solely in various countries with the name of their country on the jersey then ok yeah they aren't playing the world by those basic literal standards...BUT isn't that what the sports busniess is for? Noah Lyles has a point here
The US has the best championship for sure, but in order to be the world champions, you have to go out and play against other countries. Right now, the basketball world championship is going on currently, and there will be a champion at the end of the tournament. It will more likely be USA. At that point, they will be called world champions
I thought usa won last FIBA tournament but they did not
In 2010, the Lakers, who were NBA champions, played Barcelona, who were EuroLeague champions. And Barcelona won that game. So yes, there are teams outside of the NBA that can beat the NBA champion.
