It's called the National Basketball Association, not the International Basketball Association. Winning the FIBA World Cup or Olympic gold gives a team far more of a right to call themselves world champions than an NBA title even if the best players in the world play in the NBA. No European soccer team calls themselves world champions when they win the European Cup even though all the best soccer teams play there, that status is only afforded to the winners of the World Cup

Rigth now Argentina is world Champion of football soccer but their nacional soccer league is not a as good as is ueropean leagues.
Football does have a club world cup it's in December 2023. Winners of the Champions League usually play the winner of the Copa Libertadores. Teams from Africa, Asia, Oceania also compete. But it's mostly a European team vs a team from Brazil or Argentina in the final. Last winners were Real Madrid. The winners have a badge on their shirt for the year.

The concentration of world talent/competition is much more saturated in the NBA than it is for professional soccer. The next best professional basketball league is nowhere close in class like it is in top level soccer leagues.

Stephen A. is probably right when he says that international players come to the NBA to play at the most difficult level of basketball. However, these international players are not representing their countries; they are representing the states that pay them salaries. Therefore, they are not world champions; only the states in America, plus one from Canada, are competing in the NBA

Seeing all the players break down over this and other people trying to prove him wrong makes this all the more hilarious. “One could easily argue that NBA players compete international competition than he does” “1/3 of the NBA are intentional players”. The NBA is international yes, but it isn’t an international sport, that’s quite literally a fact. People are only arguing against it for the sake of integrity and pride.
He is by definition factually correct.
There’s an alarming difference from winning a domestic competition than winning an international competition aswell. In one you’re competing against the best players in your domestic range thus the bar of competition being arguably lower considering the sport, the other you’re seeing the best of the best in the intire world, imagine if Mike Phelps accomplishments were just domestic.
An analogy would be if someone set an American world record and claimed it to be the world record.

The English Premier league and the England football team aren’t the same. True the national team hasn’t won anything since 1966 but that’s because football is played competitively around the world. And you play for whatever country you are born in. Basketball isn’t played competitively around the world so of course US would dominate at the Olympics. And the NBA isn’t equivalent, Premier league wasn’t always on top, La Liga was in the early 00’ and Serie A was in the 90’s, US basketball has always been on top. The Euroleague could not only challenge, but probably beat the NBA. The NBA mirrors the Olympics or the World Championships because The best of the best come there to compete. To prove you are the best in basketball you have to play in the NBA. There is no way around it. To prove you’re the fastest you must compete in Olympics or World championships.

Olympics and World Championships are contested nation against nation, not US city vs another US city. Basketball already has both an Olympic tournament and an official world championships sanctioned by FIBA the International Basketball Federation. The NBA is neither. The NBA is merely a domestic league that is not open to any other teams that US and 1 canadian team and no national teams at all.
This is not a hard concept. This is how World Champoinships works in every sport on the planet and has done so for over 100 years most of the time. The NBA or any other domestic US league has no right to declare themselves a world championship.

Personally, I tend to ignore NBA playoffs until a series enters the elimination game phase.
Put NBA teams against some international teams in a 2 game series or a one-and-done knockout competition (like in soccer, NFL superbowl or NCAA march madness etc) and you may see a non NBA team prevail!?

In 2012 Corinthians won the Fifa Club World Cup final against Chelsea making them Club World Champion. They were not the best club in the world back then. Whilst I would agree with that, the whole point of a world championship is that you see if that is the case, even if the outcome seems like a foregone conclusion. In club football (soccer) you have that with the European Champions taking on the South American Champions, the Champions of Africa, Asia and North America to see who is the World Champion. Even though the European Champions tend to always win this tournament, they don't always do so, hence why you have a World Championship.
Whilst the NBA is a league with global talent, it's not a world league. It's an American league. And despite it being better than every other league, unless you play the champions of the Euro League etc., you can't really call the NBA champions the world champions.

I’ve always felt that calling an NBA champion a “world champion” is really debased.
If the USA was to win the FIBA World Cup or the Summer Olympic Games, however, then they would be able to call themselves “world champions”.
