This is indeed a thing. People tend to buy "barn find" cars to restore them themselves(-ish) because then you can really do it the way you want. Several years and a lot of money later they realise that this is not as easy as it sounds. And well here we go again.

    It's
The DUKW (pronounced duck) is an American troop transport vehicle that was used as a logistics supply vehicle during amphibious landings during World War II. It can be used both on land and at sea as it can also sail (albeit slowly).
The name is not intended as a pun, but is derived from the terminology used in World War II to refer to military vehicles, namely:
The D means the vehicle was designed in 1942
the U for amphibious rescue vehicle
the K that all wheels are driven and
the W for two driven rear axles.

The mad thing is that when that Countach went in for restoration is was probably worth £40k, when after it had been dismantled (so in current state), it was probably worth £10k. The hammer price was too high, even if you do the work yourself to sell on, the value will not be as high as most countach's as its been restored and is a high mileage. Was very interesting to see it stripped down though, I have an unstarted countach kit, and most Countach's I've seen in this condition came out of a shed, and not in Italy, so good to see what the real deal looks like unfer the trim etc.

also the countach in that miami vice chase changes between scenes by the way, it was two different cars, you can tell as it goes between euro spec and american 5000 S's and that black one still exists today too fyi
granted I havent talked to the owner in awhile, but I want to build one of those myself, sort of like a Vice City Supervette stinger tribute car with tinges of the baldwin motion ones thrown in for good measure with an LS1 motor and crosspipes I figure, as that is what jarred said makes those sound good
and to think that used to be a beige on beige 81 with a gail banks turbo, talk about an improvement and a half, also made by the same people who cut the roof off of rod stewarts countach LP400 Periscopo FYI as hey it was the 1980's and no one knew their was only 124 of them, hell lambo was just about bankrupt in 1980 and owned by the italian goverment, which prompted even ferrucio to go back to his old company and order a LP400S in white before he figured the chance to own one was gone.
and they even made a 512BB targa too, Markadian, a grey market importer before some anti fun EPA N'azis came in and changed the grey import laws
even though it WASNT an issue as you could only own ONE grey import and import that alone per person, hence why you cant get a bleeding skyline right now too.
and the black one was originally marketed as the 350 GTS with its own markings and everything else, and the flares were based on the paul newman race car, and the molds were taken off of a white daytona spider that came in for service at their dealership
and while it is a replica but its still a cool car in its own right
also their was an actual daytona in the pilot too, but the deal fell through, some doctor in the area, funny thing is it had body color mirrors on it as well, something I've never seen any of the daytona spiders since, so if one shows up, that was the one they used briefly in the pilot, and as to why it fell through, well you saw how they treated the thing in the first season in the hitlist, hell they probably melted the paint with the cameras as they often did with the firebirds in knight rider
and as to why I know this hey you got the ratarossa, I got the vice city stinger I wanna make with tinges of some countach and miura touches to go along with it as sort of a smart mans cobra
granted I keep coming back to the idea of dumping the vette motor and putting a 289 hi po in it as you just cant beat the sound of a cobra.
also anasi pipes, it had those, like theirs just alot of nice things about it, and the daytona interior was stock and taken out of a dino anyways, like it was kind of the last of the last of the 275 series with a new body
which is why they've always been less than the others and regarded as a black horse, as its really the body and the aerodynamics and stability it gave that made it special. the rest of it was frankling parts bin special stuff that you could literally find on a 67 Dino
hell maybe even a fiat dino really.

Aside, why so many 308s in the UK sourced from the US? Was the arbitrage in value between the two markets that pronounced for a period of time?

they were soooo cheap in the US for a long time compared to here. Plus being over 30 years they were cheap to import

Surprised you didn't know the amphibious truck was a DUKW. General, later Presiden,t Eisenhower said it was one of the most important vehicles in WW2 along with the likes of the Dakota and the Willys Jeep. Without it D Day might have failed
