I worked for a Budget Rent a Truck place, and my boss required all customers to return the truck with a full tank of gas. Of course people would fill it up before returning it, but by the time they drove the truck from the gas station where they filled the tank to the dealership, they used a little bit of the gas they put in. My boss always would charge them a 20 dollar service fee for that. He was a SHMUCK. Don't worry though, he went out of business a long time ago.

Rented car keys: while on honeymoon in Disney World I had my rental car key in my top shirt pocket. We went on a ride and over the first bump I felt that sucker lift and go flying. It was a $250 replacement fee (back in 2008) and my reflexes kicked it. Left hand went swiping for it and I caught it at full stretch outside of the cart to my left. The guy behind me was impressed... my wife missed it. Bought a belt clip and kept it there from then on.

In my experience at least, Disney are pretty great about finding lost stuff, especially if you tell them right away at the ride what went missing and where. You'll have to go to customer service the next day to pick it up.

Scotty is right about taking pictures. Years ago we booked a rental car from one of the big "enterprises". They were short of cars and had to wait 45 minutes, the guy pulled the minivan nose first against the building; the car wasn't washed, vacuumed or with a full tank of gas. The vehicle was just basically turned in by the last person who rented the car and not prepped. It was freezing cold and we were headed down to Florida. At the first rest stop I noticed the front end was damaged; I said to myself I am going to get screwed for this. I purchased rental insurance from a company Allianz when I did the booking online for the car at the same time. Sure enough when I got back they said the damage was my fault; I demanded to see video footage of the car entering and leaving the premises. I fought it as a matter of principal but Allianz took care of the whole thing. Always book online it's much cheaper. I always like Scottys advice but I would be very careful if you think your credit card company is covering the vehicle; get it in writing.

Rented a Uhaul like that once. About halfway into my trip (across town) it started belching thick black smoke from the tailpipe and the idle was going all over the place. By the time I made it back to Uhaul it was spraying oil out the exhaust and the clerk looks at me and says "was that scratch on the cab before?" as the mid 80's van sat in a pool of oil and smoke. Idk I can't see the van anymore lol

You are one wicked smaht guy Scotty! I just got back from vacation in Maine...and "considered" a rental out of Logan. They wanted $1200/week for a full size sedan. But at the local place in Saugus (10 miles north of Logan), I could rent the SAME car from the SAME company for $350/week. I could also return it TO THE AIRPORT with that price. I didn't take that deal since some family came up to Maine for the 2 weeks, but the third week...I rented that same car at Logan, for $274 (incl all those taxes/fees).
Always check the local operations around the airports, but also make sure they are OPEN when you fly in/out, cause they aren't 24x7 operations out in the suburbs.

As I go around the car I raise and lower my camera (phone) to get different angles in order to catch any flaws and end the video turning my key in the ignition to indicate the mileage on the vehicle.
This procedure might sound anal, but it's very quick to do.

Full 360 degree view of the car and then we do a full walk around and zoom in to take pictures of dents, scratches, or scuffs. All pictures are approved by the customer and then they can chose to have it emailed to them.

Scotty is the man. I forgot about the insurance with a credit card. Always check because chances are you have a credit card that will cover the insurance on a rental. That's a great tip. Also taking pictures this is very important. I just picked up a 2018 Chevy Equinox today as a loaner from a dealership. As soon as I got home I realized one of the tires actually had a slice in it so we will see how this goes.

I think it's not enough to take the "before" picture. Get someone from the car rental to acknowledge damage before you leave the lot. That said, I got the insurance when in Las Vegas as I used valet quite often, and there were at least two dents by those mofos. Returned the car no hassle. I noticed driving rental cars is more fun with the insurance.

  • @jeep146
    @jeep146 5 лет назад +7

I always get insurance with the rental just for piece of mind. I told my friend that and he laughed about it before his trip. Sure enough he got in a fender bender his card paid most of it but he had a headache getting everything paid. Get the insurance and forget about it, they never look for dents because you took the insurance. One other thing if you get a flat never change it yourself unless get approval, they want you to use the road service guy. Always get a receipt for the gas if you refill it yourself to prove it is full. Some people scam them on the fuel. I'm old school I just bring my Magellan with me.

I checked out the oil and it was probably 2 or more quarts down. I showed it to him and he just about swallowed his tongue. Scotty is so right about taking the pictures. I rented a car ( before digital camera's) and when it came time to sign off on any damage, I started really going over the car. The rental guy said that wasn't necessary, because he already checked it out and everything was fine. I continued checking it out and marked down any little flaw that I found. Two days later, when I brought it back and this is no lie, the guy came out with a big magnifying glass and went over the car. He pointed out every little flaw and then got exasperated when I had noticed it and marked it down on the rental agreement. If I hadn't done that, they would have charged me a fortune to repair them. Of course, they don't repair them, they just charge the next guy, and the guy after that, saying they had each done the damage.

I just watched this on my TV, and had to leave a message (my husband and live in near Houston, too). Wasting 8 years with an X5 diesel (from 2011)...I have to bow to your wisdom, but n one would believe they are such pieces of crap, literally - we had a piece of plastic (of course) that would keep the diesel flow from going back (I don't quire remember the purpose, but I'm sure you do) which melted and went where it wasn't supposed to go and, of course, they don't acknowledge it's a design flaw - they would have to pay for all the diesels to get repaired [$2K]. The main coment I wanted to make is the GPS in the X5 started having problems as soon as 2013 [2 yrs of driving - and that was around 5K miles for, me since I was only driving it around for groceries. The problem with the car's navigation system is that it stopped recognizing street names etc... and we did the software updates and so on...I started using GoogleMap as well.

Admittedly he was not a very organized person, so it could be different for much of the rest of the industry, but, he would almost never have the oil changed until it came time to turn them in to auction, which was around 30K miles. He knew that he would get in trouble if he turned in a car with the original oil filter. By 30K miles, the oil would be like black water! I couldn't even believe the motors would go that long like that. Working that job was a total goof.

Getting thier insurance makes the whole experience hassle free. Oh there's a dent oh there's a crack oh there's a whatever... Don't care cause I'm paying an extra $20 bucks to pay for it.
I've used hotwire insurance once and they was annoyed 😂 another time I just went without it cause the card covered it.
Personally I don't want my personal insurance called at all, and the card insurance is cool but can be a hassle if something happens. I just pay thier cost most of the time and be worry free on my trip and worry free of additional costs later or hassle cause they charging me for something.

They don’t own the major city locations such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville, and Memphis. This is vaguely unrelated but close... we rented a big Penske truck to move my cousin from Chicago to Atlanta. I drove it the whole way, get to my cousins new house in ATL and her driveway is infinitely steep! I try to back it up hoping maybe there would be clearance, she's supposed to be spotting me, didn't notice the docking rails were gonna hit, bent the frame right up against the steep driveway, left a mark on the ground. (had to hike everything up the hill and into the house but that's another story) Go to return the truck and I walked around it with the inspector and joked around with him chatting about the trip etc... completely distracted him from the fact the entire lower back of the truck was bent lol. Marked it off as good, sent us on our way.

Also if you are renting a car outside the U.S, check with the laws because some of them require you to have a fire extinguisher that is full and not expired. Yes your normal car insurance will cover everything except your deductible BUT the thing they don’t tell you the rental company will charge you for the down time the car is out of service!!!!! I don’t think they would be in a rush to get the car fixed because you are still paying the daily rental cost for every day the car is out of service!!!! If it is out two weeks to a month you have to pay that and YOUR insurance will NOT pay those fees!!!!!!!!! The extra insurance should also pay for your deductible.

Insurance companies and credit cards also do not cover diminution of value. This is the value lost when a car is wrecked then repaired. The repaired car is worth thousands less than the same year/make/model car that has never been wrecked. Rental car companies will come after you for that, too, in the certain event your credit card/insurance company will not pay. Rental companies have been known to put $5000 freezes on the renter's credit card for diminution of value.

I had two rentals last week when my car had new brakes and rotors installed. Plus the TPMS light was on so they ordered the part. Noticed the ride was ruff on two brand new rental cars. Checked the tire pressure and it was higher than 40psi! Thats the pressure to seat the beads of the tire but needs to be lowered to operating temps. So FYI when they buy the car in winter and now it’s summer. They never check the tire pressure from one season to the next. So check the tire pressure before you drive off.

Scotty. I see this video is from 2018. As such, you forgot one important item about rental cars which is applicable mainly in the eastern and mid-western states that have toll roads and bridges. You should NEVER NEVER NEVER agree to have the rental agency provide you with a toll transponder such as E-ZPass. This is because, in addition to the tolls the highway/bridge agency charges you, the rental company will add on a hefty surcharge for EACH toll transaction registered on the transponder while you have the car. Further, there is a delay between when you go through the toll and when the rental agency gets the statement (which is normally issued only monthly), so the rental agency does not charge the tolls and fees to you as part of the "final" bill when you return the car. Rather, the charges may appear on your credit card weeks, or sometimes months, later. And, while it's generally a good idea to find alternatives to using toll roads and bridges, there are times when using such facilities is either your only option (such as entering NY City) or the only practical option (such as the Massachusetts Turnpike - your only alternatives are US 20 or MA 9 - both of which are much slower). Most toll agencies still accept cash, and those that have gone "all electronic" sell pre-paid transponders at gas stations and convenience stores that work immediately upon purchase. Additionally, some toll agencies (New Hampshire and California among them) will give people who don't have transponders a grace period to pay the toll without incurring fees or penalties.

One thing to watch out for the credit card insurance coverage is that in some instances it only covers your deductible if you happen to have a full coverage policy for your personal vehicle(s). In that case, while you pay 0 out of pocket, it could affect your claim history with your insurance. Read the credit card contract or call them and ask to make sure what and how much is covered.

Staying away from the airports is probably the best thing one can do. These places tend to be more of a ripoff because tourist folks do not to live in the country and seldom have time to return car properly or deal with problems before their flight. Not everywhere off course. There are some rental agencies that aren't directly on airport properties, so no airport fees. I rented in Santiago de Chile once and it was a really good experience. Also one must read reviews about this particular rental location beforehand, meaning if you have had good experiences with Budget before doesn't mean that their office in another country is particularly good.

Always buy an extra key or two BEFORE you are stuck somewhere locked out and have lost the key - pickpocketed, purse snatched, whatever.
Also don't leave a transponder key or fob (remote) in the car especially if it has keyless starting.
If you can get one have a plain non-transponder key made that will open the door but won't start the engine. If you forget and leave your key in the car and lock yourself out the non-transponder key will get you in but if it's lost or stolen it won't start the car.
