      When airline goes well no one will worry about that, when trouble strike you just wish for one person that can shift the whole thing. If running a company is really that simple sure go ahead run your own. as long as union exist this will strike again next time.

    To think that under the previous West Jet leadership of Clive Beddoe, the company was one of the most admired, with dedicated employees, faithful customers, and a decent profitable company.
    And now this, since acquired by Kestrel Bidco Inc, a cowered president that avoids answering questions truthfully, has made the employees looking to unionized, etc. all in the name of squeezing more money and cutting costs.
    The only thing the AMEs want is salary comparable to what mechanics make in the USA and in Europe.

    In Japan, when the buses strike, they keep the service running but it's free, that way it impacts the people up top only. They should do something similar here.

    Then they pawn the issue over to binding arbitration, to do what they should have done.

    THANK YOU FOR PRESENTING THE WORKERS SIDE OF THE STORY! out here in Calgary, it’s ALLL about how WestJet management are outraged, and their stance of “how the evil and insulant union flagrantly disobeyed government orders, callously walking off the job, stranding thousands of poor travellers - like how could they?!”
    This is not to demean any of the challenges and frustrations that
    fare paying customers - regular people - have endured through these disruptions caused.
    Thank you for presenting the union and workers side of the story.

      They could have let the public know their intentions. They purposely allowed the public to believe they weren’t going to strike. Thousands of people travelled on Thursday and Friday because they believed this, and are now stranded. That was pure malice towards the Canadian public by the union.

    I remember when WestJet first came on the scene that they boasted employees were owners. I guess there was a huge abyss between how much the employees earned as returns and the CEO's. Which made a union necessary.

    Misleading headline, the mechanics didn't do this, not solely responsible, strike mandates and strike notice was supplied. The airlines unwillingness to negotiate made the strike inevitable.

      @@leslieb551 Should the union have called you at home? Maybe the airline could've notified those with booked flights of the strike notice and how it may affect the flights. The mechanics union is not going to have access to the flight manifests. Likewise, they are not the ones providing the service to the public, it's the airline, and if the airline had their ducks in order, instead of counting their money while they pit the passengers against the mechanics with the help of flagrant headlines like this video, you'd have been better off. Stop letting corporations tell you the little guy is greedy. Stop kissing the boots of corporations.

    this is why i book asian airlines because they have the best service and the newest aircrafts. european airlines are decent too. asian and emirates and other middle east airlines always the best. Airlines in north america are always not safe, old and bad service but still very expensive. This is a fact.

      Government does not interfere with an internal issue such as collective bargaining in a private company.
      Air travel isn't really an essential service.
      Perhaps you should send a letter to Management of Westjet and ask why they let negotiations fall apart.

YOU do realize that there are airlines around the world with highly trained mechanics from those countries with perfect records.       @@marytrafford8214 Many of the caregivers are qualified Registered Nurses from other countries, some even Med doctors in their former countries, so don't suggest these immigrants are inferior or dumb, that would be racist. There are also 1000 airlines around the world with highly qualified mechanics in those countries that would be happy to replace these greedy goons holding very nice Canadian Customers hostage preventing from taking their kids from a vacation they saved 2 yrs to attend or to go to a wedding this weekend. GREED!

    Not willing to take the risk? Then do NOT book any flights. You know that strikes can happen and you know that unions will do so over busy days/seasons. I wouldn't be mad if WestJet shut down, people lost their jobs, and Air Canada prices went up. No one is entitled to flying - it's a luxury.
