  • The union representing WestJet mechanics have served strike notice, meaning workers could be off the job Friday night. The airline’s CEO says their offer is raises of 22% over 4 years, something any other union would accept.

As a passenger and frequent customer of Westjet I would want to make sure the MEs and pilots are happy when working and flying a plane I'm on.

"Best paid mechanics in Canada" - that doesn't say much.
$109K for a ME? Heavy duty mechanics make far more than that.

Question is, after Trudeau/Govt takes their cut how much do those Candians take home? 50~58k?

That guy was downright ridiculous. Give them whatever they want and I am sure they deserve it but he doesn’t know what they want? You shouldn’t be commenting. Why should it be up to WestJet to make industry changing decisions? They were offered 20 percent which is more of a raise than I have had over the past 12 years, but they want to be more than just the highest paid? Ok, so then ticket prices will have a big jump, WestJet won’t be able to compete, and you will all be out of jobs. Brilliant thinking. Take the 20% and get your entitled butts back to work. All these unions are just making life more expensive for everyone.

You obviously don't get it. Its okay, the average Canadian traveler is generally naive and misinformed on most things aviation related. You clearly fall into that category. I don't know what line of work you're in and it doesn't matter. The AME industry in Canada is at least a decade behind as far as fair wages go. An "industry leading contract" is a joke in this case. Don't fool yourself into thinking the math hasn't been done by both parties. The deal being pushed by the union would barely affect WJ's balance sheet, and ticket prices would increase a few dollars on average. Meanwhile, the clowns in upper management (some of whom have plenty of prior experience ruining airlines in Europe on behalf of Onex) have been bargaining in bad faith and lying or omitting information in front of the media to garner sympathy. Its truly hard to believe that someone who gets a 7 figure bonus every year isn't worried about said bonus being a little smaller this year. Not hard to see where the real problem lies here....

Good thing they have a union, otherwise that CEO would definitely **** them over.

There’s gotta be a lot more to the story than just wages. Many of us know the working conditions at Westjet are anywhere far from good. There’s a lot more to this story.

Are you saying that inflation has consequences, one of those being workers want higher wages. Don’t worry, the government will step in to help out in the situation, the elitist love to fly.

Since when do unions ever make sense. More reason to get rid of them.
