Working with hundreds of Indian international students over the past year has shown me that there is no way the majority of them have legitimate university degrees.
It’s all blues collar jobs even after getting a degree maybe out of 2 million Indians 1-5 will be making it otherwise all stuck in McDonald’s and security jobs 🥺
The moment any recruiters made promises for anything, it should be a red flag. I am sure these students are no stranger to these kind of scam. To say otherwise is plain naive and denial of responsibility.
The UK faced the same situation about a decade ago, which resulted in the closing down of all colleges that were there only to provide visas to international students.
How many students studying at those private colleges were actually serious students? Do yourself a favour and watch Border Security UK on youtube and you will see how many fake students were "studying" at these private colleges , just to get their post graduate work permit.
Has the situation improved now? Please enlighten me. I want to study abroad. And I don't want to fall into traps like these. Some days ago I saw a post on IDP's page which stated that students can now work for longer hours in Canada to boost the Canadian economy which had collapsed after the Pandemic. After seeing this video I have a feeling that it was a trap to attract more students.
@@MarinafromPakistan In the UK, the situation improved now. However, the number of students coming to the UK after re-introducing post-study visa (PSW) has gone up by several folds. Further, the UK economy is also not doing very well at the moment. So, it may be difficult to get part-time work during the studies and a full-time job after completing studies. This year >1L Indian students came to the UK for studies. If each pays 10K pounds per year (I know students pay much more as a tuition fee for masters in science/tech. subjects), which is equivalent to 1 Billion pounds. So, the UK and other Western countries are interested in improving their economy by attracting overseas students, who pay higher tuition fees than the home students.

As a 3rd gen Canadian, I think you guys are exactly what this country needs, but you're getting fleeced. If you guys can vote remember your experience when the time comes.
My wife is from Europe, she worked hard to come here and did it the right way. Nothing wrong with going back to India after your studies and applying the right way like everyone else does. My beautiful wife spent every last penny she had but made a great life here. I know what my wife went through and it’s the way it needs to be.
There is no incentive to stop this because the universities and colleges are banking a fortune on these Indian students. Not only education institutions but landlords and local businesses take advantage of the situation by overcharging and exploiting them for very low wages. it's become a big problem and it needs to be addressed more.
The landlords have hurt even Canadians who found themselves having to move during these tumultuous times. The government talks a great deal about solutions to the housing problem but have never mentioned anything about correcting the rental situation! Those who cannot afford to buy a house are being gouged by landlords. The next generation of middle class Canadians is going to have to live with their parents for a long time, won't be able to afford the rent, the education, let alone buy a house!
I am so glad that I dedicated 3 years of my life and got a good college and Job in my own country India. After hearing about all the problems that the international students face on a daily basis life in India feels more easy
When i went to Canada for my studies in 2015 at Fleming College, the class had only four international students. Three Indians and one Nigerian. In 2017, the same class admitted 100+ Indian International students and 3 Canadian students. I left Canada in 2016. It's not worth spending so much money to live in a Tundra, just to pay taxes.
This information is from 2022, and it's now 2024. The problem has worsened, yet there has been no action from provincial or federal governments. This is absolutely shameful.
When I was in college studying in a postgraduate program in international business. I found that most of the class can barely speak and write in English. When I was doing group assignments, I had to do basically 100% of the work cuz my group members can hardly write anything readable. I was not enrolled in one of those sketchy private colleges, I was in a legit public college for god sake🤦🏻♂️
@@tristanlau1213 Public college or unviersity? While public college is legitimate, the standards to enter college are lower than University and thus tend to attract lower quality students.

This is very sad. As a canadian, I hope this tuition scam stops because it's not only hurting individuals coming to Canada with false hope, but also hurts the canadian house/job market greatly for locals.
In my country, it's an open information that "studying" in Canada actually means mainly working while studying on the side. Canada needs the cheap labor. Edit: some just pretend to study in Canada but really, the goal is to cross the border to the US.
You have to be kinda stupid to think that you can just move to a random country and expect the people to treat you great and give you opportunities when the people who were born there dont even get that... no offense but we dont need immigrants what so ever it's all about money and political power
As I have commented earlier, all the Canadian government has to do is bring in contract workers, like what the countries in UAE have been doing. This way, education is not used a front to enter, stay and work.
@@Whatisnottaken the way you frame it makes it seem that the UAE government is actively invovled in signing contracts with individual workers. That's not the case. The law simply allows a private company to present a job contract to a person and sign it and bring the person on a a visa. The employer need not prove if the person's job cannot be filled by a local unlike a sponsored Work Visa in Canada
the amount of international students Canada is accepting is not sustainable. There's not enough student housing or part time jobs. The colleges and universities have taken advantage of both domestic and international students.
As a former international student in Canada who’s gone through all of that; the harsh winters, super high tuition, homesickness, employment uncertainty.. my advice, RESEARCH BEFORE YOU COME TO CANADA. Getting here is easy, staying here and thriving is a whole different story. This makes so much sense and I understand why there are so many international students in canada. I knew a guy who would recruit people for work in Canada and he would get paid 2000 or so per person. It's like importing slaves and slave labour. I guess we all get exploited at some point.
it is worse in Australia, agents and recruiters getting paid commissions to effectively recruit slaves to do the jobs white people do not want to do... uber drivers, supermarket workers, cleaners etc
The huge amount of international students from India coming into Canada though the back door really SUCKS !! Something drastic should be done about this crazy influx ..
The system was not made for international students' benefit or local Canadian students benefit. As a local Canadian I was homeless during university. It all just goes to landlords, politicians, and retirees.
Don't come here, stay home you love so much. Demand changes there. Fight for your rights there. Don't come to Canada with yiur rules. Don't expect Canada to put everything upside down to accommodate every international student needs and wants.
Thank you to the Fifth Estate for this story. This is just the tip of the iceberg. So many poor students come to Canada after their parents use their life savings. Just breaks my heart.
But why didn’t India’s media run the story before you all left to your perilous venture abroad? Hello? And your PM Modi is the guilty party in the end.
Last year, I was working full time, budgeting groceries, unable to afford date nights, and missing time with my kids. Now I learned how to make money online. Now am a SAHM, homeschooling, and making profits every week.
More like Canadians using Indians to scam Indians if you wanna go down that route. The people who refused to even show up on camera, you know? The ones who hired those Indians in the first place and are making bank to only buy more property and then charge exorbitant rent.
I am a part time lyft driver I had this passenger once he was Indian, he told me about himself and this was about a year ago who had come to Canada to "study" he literally told me he was working two jobs and at the same time having someone else attend his online class that was in Kelowna. He was living Surrey, I asked why can't he attend it himself and also said he has a lower chance of passing the class so he a rather pay for it and have someone else achieve his grades for him. This country is going in the wrong direction. Shame on people who come here and take advantage of the genuine system we have.
In the USA you basically cannot work as a student unless it is on the campus itself. It's very hard to get a legal job as a student here on student visa, of course you can always get a job under the table.
Shout out to Mark Kelly and Earl Blaney. As a Canadian, I’m so sorry to Dillpreet and her father, and all the international students being exploited from India.

This documentary is very informative. People often judge these students quickly, but it's important to look at the bigger picture to understand their real stories. Great job on this. The final part, when her father spoke to her, really brought tears to my eyes.
I lived in India because my parents did not have the money to send me abroad. I am supposed to travel to Canada in another 5days with a work permit offered from my current employer in India with a salary which is above average in Canada. As an experienced professional worked in Indian IT market for more than 7 years, I want the Indian students to know that if you are planning to work in core subjects like mechanical, civil, electrical or electronics, only then you should consider this difficult option. Otherwise in India, there is a massive shortage in the IT & Software market. With 5+ years of experience, with right skill you can earn 30-40LPA easily. So be careful before putting your life & your parents' only means of survival at risk.
I left India for work overseas 35 years. We didn't leave home with money, because we left home to earn money not to carry money to a foreign country. I continue to believe if you are leaving home with money, you are being exploited.

Thank goodness I chose the United States for my education. In 2010, I had two options -Texas A&M University and University of Waterloo. I thought of Waterloo at first (being top university in Canada vs 15th in US) as I was naive, but Texas A&M gave me teaching assistantship which meant 100 % tuition scholar and monthly stipend. Being from a lower middle class family in India, I took the option. Even 13 years down the line, that was the best decision of my life. I had chance to work with best researchers and professors in world, work in highly funded research labs, publish papers and patent and later get good job in my domain. I never aimed for green card and moved back to India. I applied for Canada and even received ITA but didn't go ahead. Things are not perfect but even today in India, most people are impressed by some niche work I did in US.

I feel so bad for these students. Those teachers mentioning that we will look back 20 years from now and feel ashamed about this situation. Well, the situation hasn’t changed much since I came to Canada in 95. Education was a business back then and it is still a business. I got my education in some of the top universities in Canada but never felt like it was for education, it was more like running business for these universities.
My sister went to Canada to study animation because it was a quarter of the price, faster, and had better employment numbers than our schools in America. Everything went very smooth, she got steady employment that was willing to sponsor her visas and a reasonably straightforward path to dual citizenship. When we road-tripped up to Vancouver to get her settled, her landlady got upset with us when we pulled out the tools and started to adapt for her a custom bedframe riser. When we checked in to see what we had done wrong, we found her crying on the porch. She said her parents sent her away to Canada without guidance, help, or compassion, and that she was homesick still even 25 years later.

Just do one thing, limit number of international students to 60% - 70% in every college. And college cannot be started if rest 30% - 40% of seats for domestic students is not filled first. If any college wants to go for international students only, then their admission process/audit should go through Canadian government. So there is no exploitation of international students.
This is primarily happening in private career colleges which are shady degree mills. These private colleges are nearly 100% foreign students in a generic office building. Yes, private colleges should proabbly be shut down, not sure why the government allows them.
I went to Seneca College and was classmates with a number of Indian students. The things some of them had to go through to get there was astonishing. I'm not surprised by this report at all.
I spent 6 years in university and 7 years in college after that. I had absolutely no idea this was going on. I also didn’t really understand why international students had to pay such a high tuition fee. As a domestic student, I already struggled to pay my tuition fees.
It’s heartbreaking. But I wanted to go to ivy leag university but my family could not afford help me so I went locally. You cannot afford foreign education you can’t afford it. Thats that.
Its basically because the government wants to limit newcomers and if the tuition fees werent this high for international syudents Canada would have a flood of students.

Have a few internationals in engineering classes who do basically the bare minimum. thankfully for us most internationals do try their best in engineering courses since it isn’t a scam college, but still nuts that there are some that barely try in our engineering courses
For most, leaving the country for even an opportunity in the west is good enough for people to make the leap. sad but true.

Appreciate the time you have invested in this episode to show the ground reality.

Canada and Australia treats International students as a cash cow...still people thinks its heaven here

Australia did something about canada hasn't done nothing
@@VanPat-oj3eh I don't see much hostility on Canada's online media.
I spent 6 years in university and 7 years in college after that.
I had absolutely no idea this was going on. I also didn’t really understand why international students had to pay such a high tuition fee. As a domestic student, I already struggled to pay my tuition fees.
Really? Im domestic too and OSAP grants pay for half my degree + OSAP loans that pay the other half.
That’s unfortunate. There are so many highly skilled people from all over the world.
Was college worth it for you
Canada for
canadians...simple...this is no discrimination.....
Currently, I'm studying in Canada and this video opened my eyes to the dark side of Canadian college that I never knew about. What I can say is never let your guard down. I did the research, I picked the right college. Even in Canada, I stay alerted. Only by staying strong and resilient, the Canadian dream might come true.
there is no such thing called canadian dream nowadays.
Which college you are studying in?
@@Abhi_gyan_1 A person's dream differs from others. Most people I know in Canada are middle-class, living a normal life. I do admit that my family has a strong financial foundation, fortunately. So for those with little money, life will be difficult for them.

In ten years, Punjabi people population increased from0.05% To 7.7% of Canadian population, almost 5 million people, Their leaders sending them to live in low populated cities and towns to win elections and increase their power in the government to bring another 10 million Punjabi from India.
this is an invasion.
The students from Punjab think of Canada as an extension of their state. But sadly the reality is far from the expectation.
It is not theirs nor will it ever be.
This is truly heartbreaking, I feel so sorry for International Students who came here with dreams but were given something far below that. I am a Canadian born student, brought up and raised in Brampton but I made friends with many international students. I don't understand how International students have to pay 3-4x our tuition, cover their living expenses, and have work restrictions on their study permit. The truth is competion is everywhere and companies are competing for top students who go to credible universites. I don't see how international students are suppose to compete with these students when there is a shortage of high-paying jobs. I truly feel bad. I advise students to tell their stories to their younger siblings and cousins back home and prevent them from living a hard-working life with little reward. Advise them to complete their studies back home and find a job in big cities back home. As a domestic student I struggle to pay for my own expenses and I could not imagine if I did not have my parents support. This is fraud on another level!!!
i wouldnt give this advise to a fellow African because it is sooooo horrible in Africa.
MSF - such a sorry state ?
Oh Canada
Domestic students or their parents pay for the public system and the international students subsidize it but the small career colleges are concerning.
I don't understand what you don't understand. Poor people mantain medium class people and these wealthy people. There will always be poor people that will think that can move forward but that's the fundamental lie.
It’s true that Most students do not come here to study, study visa is just a stepping stone for pr, the dream of settling abroad comes with big price tag. Students have been exploited by agents, collages, employers. System is rigid, not only for a particular group but for everyone of us.
Toll on students? I’m confused. Say it will take 75 years to pay off their debt? Then don’t come to Canada. If you are rich come to Canada. Want to get an education in a foreign country. Don’t expect a job. Don’t expect privileges if you aren’t Canadian. Seriously is this a shock? Don’t send your kids if you can’t afford it. Don’t expect to move to Canada and get Canadians to pay. It just seems that the expectations are you come as a student you stay as you prefer.
We have the same problem in Australia. International education is in need of major overhaul. These international students bring alot of money for our universities but lack valuable skills.
indians do not have any money, its a very low cost of living country where family home costs just $10K. someone must be paying for them to go West.
100 percent true mate👍
another sad part of this story is, that most of the recruiters are people from international locations who are ripping off their own people.
its this kind of culture. jobs are the same, you have to pay to play.
Wow how has changed. 30 years ago, I remembered that international students were kids living alone in multimillion dollar homes and driving to school in exotic cars.
That's still happening with international students here from China/Hong Kong
Many of them still do and after run away in their India to avoid paying loans for those mustangs

Are there no schools in India ? this seems like a bad financial decision to begin with....
These are not intlegence enough to go top indian college but have money or land.
Too much competition for bunch of seats. There's also a concept of reservation that is abused. People who can't hack it in India, come to Canada
I don’t think this is an Canadian problem alone. Australia has its fair share especially Melbourne. Lot of dubious colleges which aren’t accredited or recognised. The lure of international education and better life will always be a draw card regardless….
Thankyou fifth Estate team for hearing the voice of international students and bring this topic to the lime light.
Hatts off to you guys !! You guys are doing a tremendous job
Lots of blessings
Thank you for bringing attention to this... I'm so sad this is going on ‐ those poor kids need help & those colleges are behaving so cruelly & selfishly💔💔
Bankers want the land I am guessing, hoping the parents of these kids faulter while mortgaging their farmland back in India.
I don't think it's the Canadian System, rather it's Indian corruption manipulating us. Right?

In all fairness, some of these students have very unrealistic expectations of what employment in Canada looks like. I have a family member who is a store manager at a Canada wide clothing retail store. Students are coming in and asking for $22/HR to work part-time doing sales/cash.
I live in an African country and some people here view many western countries as heaven or their big break. I've seen people leave good jobs here to become house cleaners there, getting paid far less. I've seen women marry foreign men not for love, but to go to foreign countries only for them to be abused, forced to do horrible things. Many people have very high and unrealistic expectations when moving to western countries. Some can make it big, most cannot.
