Good job!. The attack disk indeed is very useful, is one of those things I don't understand why didn't make it into the vanilla game but as a mod instead, it really helps so much... Good luck in your hunts! :)
Finally I can use the Attack Disk - once I had the map tool mod it was easy. Now a video on the Time, Distance, Speed side of the disc would be great for immersion. Cheers.
Yeah the map tools mod (and Course+) are two truly life-changing QoL mods for this game. Can't reccomend them enough :). Let's see how the video works, and if there's enough demand on the comment sections for a video talking more about the Attack Disk mod. If there is enough interest, you can bet I'll make one :D
Here is my sacrificial comment to the RUclips gods of the algorithm and so that we get more videos from ramjb. Joking aside, excellent tutorial. You and xl_jedi should be getting paid by the devs. lol
Thanks for doing the video on the attack disc. I want you to showcase how to 0 gryo angle shoot and 90 degrees form the attack disc. As well. Thanks for doing the video that I had asked for.
was planning to do an AoB tutorial anyway, the attack disk was a suggestion that complemented it really well. Thanks for giving me the idea!. I'll see what I can do about your request. Probably will do it in one of my career videos. If I do a more complete guide about the Attack Disk, I'll be struggling for time to cover all the things you can do with that thing to go on and begin showcasing examples of each of the utilities the tool has, and I don't think a 2 hour tutorial will be very watchable for most people :D.
Agree 100% on map contacts being on. The captain has other things to do than mapping contacts. Junior officers will take care of that for you. I've started playing the same way. Thank you for the tutorial! Concise, and clear. :)
It's not only mapping contacts. With map contacts off ,when he's on the bridge, binoculars aimed at his target, he's not looking elsewhere. A destroyer might be running at flank speed towards his submarine, he'll never be any wiser about it. Because noone in the tower is going to warn him. Situational awareness=0. glad you liked the tutorial! :)
Quick observation if you always attack at a 90 Degrees angle doesn't this open your profile massively for ASCDIC to locate you? I would have thought Constant Bearing, Decreaning Distance is a valuable strategy espcially later in the war? That way if you have the speed you can close distance from the stern making it less likely to be pinged?
Uhmmmm no. In a 90º angle your profile towards the target reduces the closer the target gets to you (at 90º his side will be aiming directly at your bow, which is the smaller profile you'll ever give). Hence, it actually helps with evading detection because ASDIC only really works at ranges around 2000-3000m (depends on the stage of the war), and by the time they're moving that close your profile should actually be pretty small. A rear approach is never recommended for an uboat attack. In general the ideal attack position is in front of the target and to one of his sides (which one depends on lightning, wind and sea conditions, etc, to reduce observability, but in game I don't think that is modelled), so you can let them come to you and shoot to their side when ready.
Glad you liked it. Let's see how much interest it's in an Attack Disc tutorial in the comments, and in how the video does. If there's enough, I can guarantee, that video will happen :D
@@ramjb Well, it seems there is a vivid response here 😃 Like you said in the video, there are different ways to get to the contact, determine course and speed and then AoB, so you get a lot of maybe differing responses, but you know what you are doing and how you want to play. And that is something I like about the game too, everyone can play the way they are comfortable and how they feel it is realistic.
All of the ones I currently have (you can check the list on the description) do work in saved games, yes :). You'll get a warning when loading the game, but just click "ok" and go on playing, they'll work just fine.
Good tutorial and it was interesting to see the attack Disk in use. However, when you play with map hints on, the use of map tools is much much easier and faster for getting the AoB. For everyone who plays on 100% realism (like me) the tutorial is useless. There are also a few mistakes in your tutorial. With bearings alone you can't get the course and locations of a ship. This only works, because you have map hints on. Maybe worth to mention.
With Bearings alone you can't get course and location. With bearing and range, you do. And you can find out bearing with your observation device, and range with the stadimeter. You do it twice, you have two enemy positions across times. You draw a line between them both, you have a course. You have a course, you can do everything else in the video This video is fully appliable to Map Contacts Off mode. Map contacts on is not 100% realism. It's hardcore mode. It's a thing I've mentioned plenty of times. I'm an uboat captain, not a navigation officer or a weapons officer. Those, and other crewmen, are those who do plots. The captain doesn't go up and down from the conning tower to the map table, pen and ruler on the hand, in the middle of an attack. He delegates on others to do that for him. The captain is not the only guy on the bridge of the submarine looking at targets, there are other crewmen with him up there watching all around the sub, while the captain focuses on his target. Is map contacts on too accurate?. absolutely and I wish there was a mod that changed that in a way that makes things less accurate (No Spoilers mod's solution is a neat idea but in practice I don't like at all). Is it unrealistic?. Damn right, it is. But is still more realistic than being forced to do all the plotting jobs, and that nobody warns me about other contacts while I'm on the bridge focused on my target. Just to name a couple things that are woefully unrealistic about map contacts off. I've said so many times in the past - SH3 and SH4 I played for a very long time with no map contacts. Was fun for a while, but in due time you realize that if you're a submarine captain, you shouldn't be doing all that stuff your crew should do for you. And that holds especially true in a subsim with such a heavy component of crew management as UBOAT. So, play the way you want, but don't think is more "realistic"...in fact it can perfectly be argued is less. And even with map contacts off, everything I explain in the video, applies. You just have to put more work on finding target course and distance, but you can do it, and you can plot everything yourself...which is more or less what you signed up for when you began a career with map contacts off, isn't it? ;)
I love the effort you put in this videos, i hope you get rewards you hope from it. You really should stop hiding behind "im the captain not the navigastion officer" when it comes to map contacts, just admint that that is hiw you like to play it. By your logic you should never shoot the deck gun, manage thefood storages or use the tdc. The only videos of silent hunter you have are also with map contacts.
Sometimes the simplest things are the most complicated to explain. And is much worse when you're trying to do in a language that's not yours!. Believe me...I know ;)
With map contacts on, it takes 3 clicks and only a couple of seconds to get a ~95% accurate AoB. I think litely salted made a no-nonsense video on that, if you're interested. You basically can't miss with map contacts on.
Thanks. I would like to learn more about the attack disk as well.
Noted!. There are other things in the way I want to make videos about before, but it'll be eventually done! :)
@@ramjb Sounds good. Thanks!
A very constructive video, thank you for clarifying such important issues in this sim game !!!
Glad it was useful! :)
Very, very useful! Thanks to your tutorial, I downloaded the attack disk mod yesterday and sunk my first ship fully manually on the first try!

Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed the tutorial! :)
Thank you, thanks to your earlier videos I am loving my tdc.
Glad to hear! 😉. I put quite the effort in this videos so is great seeing they are helping viewers enjoy the game!
Oh I definitely want to see more about the mod!
let's see how this video does... if it gets enough views and likes you can count on it! :D
Very nice explanation. All in all a good tutorial series that I can warmly recommend to beginners.
Thanks a lot! :)
Thank you for this tutorial! Great video and very helpful
Glad to hear it helped you! :)
Thank you!
You're most welcome!. Hope it helped! :)
Thank you for making so many tutorials, I'm sure a lot of people will learn from them

@@ramjb just do the most basic stuff like the 90 degree attack and a 0 gryo angle shot. If you prefer to do more advanced you can down the road.
Nice!
glad you liked it! :)
Thanks RamJB these are very useful
Glad they are helping! :D
I appreciate the tutorial. I'd like to see what the other disc that comes with the mod is for too.
