    I love Ian’s style! Your advice is great about it though. I remember the first class I took of his and man I was struggling getting my watercolor to look like his. As so many have said, he makes it look effortless. Thank goodness a little voice in my head said, “Ian’s had 20 years or so to perfect his style, why in the world would you think you can do it after watching a single tutorial!” That was what I needed to hear and I proceeded to just have fun and play. I have taken several more of his courses but somehow missed these so thank you! Please do more! I went to his website and ended up buying his Junkyard course instead of this one. Can’t pass up an Ian tractor AND boat tutorial!

    I found this video after signing up for the Beginner's Course of Ian and I wish I would have seen it before I attempted Module 1. I found his version so overwhelming and started to wonder why this was called a Beginner's course. I ended up by just doing the church 🙂. Now I've seen your version and your advice to not copy exactly, I think I will have another go. Thank you so much for this.

    Hi Toria! Just watching this video. I see some similarities to housesketcher in some ways. I just took Albert’s course on domestika and really like it. I was having the same thoughts about loving someone’s work and then trying to create drawings or paintings like them. Like copying them. And then that felt wrong I just didn’t want to copy someone else’s work but like you said wanted to have their work influence me. So yeah I’ve been thinking a lot about that. And how to create that balance. It’s interesting too, the interesting color palettes that people use seem to be repeated in their work at least over a certain period of time. Thank you for your candid videos!

    I was thrilled to see the title of your video when I switched on this morning. Absolutely love Ian Fennelly's work. I came across him on RUclips a few months ago and thought wow, just love his style. I'd never done anything like this before, so just had to have a go! I already had all the pens and colours he uses, but I'm rather ashamed to say I just copied. I do struggle with 'making it my own', though am working on this! What I am proud of is the fact that I went straight in with pen sketch rather than pencil. and really enjoyed the process. Would love to see more of this from you. Love your end result.

      Thanks Susan! Absolutely no shame in copying either - totally valid - I guess I was saying don't worry if yours doesn't look exactly like Ian's - but also probably good if it doesn't but learning his process definitely opened me up to some new ways of seeing and doing things :) You went straight in with pen!! FEARLESS!! Love it, great work :)

    I took the course too. I think its a bit deceiving though I would not say its a beginners course. You did great but you are not a beginner I was totally overwhelmed to be honest. I love Ian's work but it is not as easy as he makes it look. For him to do what he does you need a thorough understanding of perspective which I'm still working on. Now rather then doing whole street blocks I think it would have been better for a beginner if maybe he tackled one building at a time to explain his process. Also its not just about throwing around water color you do have to know a bit about how the medium works to not get mud. I haven't given up having bought the course I will go back to it and try again but this is my honest review if you are a beginner watch his many RUclips videos first they are pretty much just like the course.

      Thanks for the input Paula! I think you're right. Its not for the absolute beginner and that's such an important distinction to make and so easy to overlook...this is great feedback, thanks for your comment and thanks for watching the vid! :)

      Thank you so much for the feedback Paula! We will definitely consider your words about the course and see what we can do to improve the elements on perspective :) It's a very difficult task I agree!!

      I absolutely agree. I’ve done the first lesson, but it’s actually deflated me rather than encouraged me. Not a beginner course, I don’t think, though I think Ian is brilliant and a great teacher. I think perhaps I might be the problem. I’ll go back to it later:)

    I am sooo glad you said watercolors are frustrating. Drawing all my life, I started urban sketching (and watercolors) in the pandemic. I have practically all the pens, all the sketchbooks, all the brands of watercolors, I follow all the urban sketchers on RUclips, I take weekly classes with many of them, and I still hate all of my results, why is it so hard ??? I love it that you show your process even when you hate it yourself because it shows all of us to just keep going and learning . On another note I feel like watercolor is that medium that really is hard to teach because it has a life of its own where you can only learn it by trial and error until you find your style. Thoughts?

    Thanks for being brave to share your process, I think yours came out great! I think one of the biggest thrills of his style is how he's able to bend and stretch perspective in such a cinematic and charming way... You are right about him making it look easy... I did a paint along session with him and my result was total chaos, haha. But hopefully, like me, you had fun pushing yourself in his direction. Would love to see you try the other sessions!

    • @wenwake7584
      @wenwake7584 2 года назад

      @@tarias_sketchy_adventures That's a shame the production quality is naff because it isn't cheap either! I've been umming and arring over buying a John Salminen hardback book that is a beautifully produced coffee table size book of his work at an even lower price... guess which one I'll buying ;)
      Still, I love the Fennelly. He has the knack to be an approachable educator and make things understandable and I bet his workshops are fun with his humour. I may get to one of his workshops when this pandemic becomes endemic.
      I haven't done the truck either. Just thought I'd do a shout out for your viewers. I may give it a go before possibly buying a course. I fancy a Lapin course, because love that man's work and his loopy perspective, but I'm waiting for sales.
      P.S. Love the new logo which is distinct and pops among my youtube subs list. So easy, compared to the previous black and white logo, to find as I have catching up to do :)
