When you said "faff'n around" I laughed out loud, but when the lovely lady came over with the kettle, I died laughing. 600% British this video is, I love it. Thank you from The States.

So this is it. Urban sketching and watercolor. So fun to watch you Ian. The way you hold your pens and brushes amazes me. I think this is why I dont get loose paintings. I got a grip on my brush like it's going to spout wings and fly away. Thank you sir. You are the ultimate artist to learn from and I appreciate the work. You are lovely

I love this way of working! I’ve been struggling with watercolors, there is no really good alternative to use on location to add color (I like working with colored pencil but I’m not bringing the whole set with me, I could just see me fiddling around and losing 3 pencils in the grass each time I sit down), I love working with fineliners so I do combine the two but draw first, then add color and it somehow always disappoints me. I also struggle to let go of the idea of true to life colors, even though I’d love to use a more ‘feel’ approach. I’m definitely going to try this method!

Hi Ian. I live on the Wirral too. I’ve been a water colour painter for decades, but love watching and listening to your painting videos . You have REALLY enticed me to go out and do some urban sketching. You have made me realise how many scenes can be used as subject matter, and your loose style has realy encouraged me to paint more loosely and try to match your clear fresh style. Many thanks!

Never tried urban sketching, and really want to try, but where to start? You laid your pens out for an outline and that just made the whole thing seen a lot simpler for me. Love Hoylake, and wirral. The kindness of the lady coming out with a hot drink is typical of the friendliness of Northern folk.

I do enjoy drawing a bit more than painting, but love doing both. So when you said you're not a painter, you're an urban sketcher, I felt like "me too!"....so I can leave behind the "rules".whew. Could you tell me though, is a brush pen a watercolor brush pen or is it a sort of magic marker? I can't really find the specific answer so I'll know what to get. Thank you for the videos!

Spend 2 minutes a day drawing circles, lines, squares, triangles aso. Like fill a cheap piece of printer paper completely with circles or lines, trying to get them “perfect” one at a time. It won’t take long before the things you draw start looking like the things you are trying to draw.
