I’m a late commenter to this video, but I just wanted to say thank you because this was extremely helpful. I have just bought your book (The Beginner’s Guide to Urban Sketching), and from what I have read so far, it is going to help me improve dramatically. I also love your tattoos!
Taria. I am sorry I have never been able to give you money. However, you have helped me so much in my artistic journey. I am 63 and you are changing my life. You taught me to enjoy. I mean when you really think about why create if you are not enjoying it. Thank you darling from Karen in nyc. 💜💚💙
Great advice. While I truly don't feel comfortable sketching outside by myself, I hope to find a few like-minded seniors who might want to join me in urban sketching. Thank you for this video,
OK I give up. I clicked the link and signed up for a year of skillshare and I cannot find anything to do with you. I’ve searched your name, Taria, and Sketchy Adventures and every possible variation and combination. I’m rather frustrated. Please enlighten. Thanks!
Hello - I am sorry for your frustration! I don't have a skillshare class. I was showing you other people's classes which are fantastic. Sorry if that wasn't clear! Ihave my own platform with my own online courses / classes which you can check out here: prettysketchy.tv
Hi Amy - was it the one where I share a variety of urban sketchers who use white space / sketch minimally? If so, this one: ruclips.net/video/kmfh0-EKxD8/видео.html
Hi Taria. Thanks for some great advice. Weather here in the UK had been rubbish since I got interested in sketching. Can’t wait for some warm dry weather to get out there, although a bit apprehensive about sketching in public. Just ordered your book last week. So looking forward to getting stuck into that while the weather is miserable. Have done a few sketches from photos, including your Gaudi sketchbook spread!
Yah weather can be such an obstacle! I spent a lot of time sketching inside / from a car window in the UK. We have the opposite problem - its been so hot outside the last few months! I saw your Gaudi sketchbook spread - so great, I am so happy you sketched along :D Thanks for getting my book - I hope it gives you lots of value!!
Taria, I bought your book last week. I am about a quarter through and absolutely love it. By far the best urban sketching book I've read. I have already put some ideas in practice - cafes, street furniture, dark lines in foreground, clear fore, middle and back gounds ... It's like you wrote this for me ! I am going to take it to the Cafe Sketchers group I belong to as I know it will inspire others.
Hi Taria! Great video, thanks! You mentioned sketching people as a challenge, and I agree. Two of the best urban sketchers I know for people are Sketching Scottie and Graham Berry. I especially like Scottie because he details how he does it, and it's very simple. You might check them out if you haven't already.
I definitely tend to get caught up in the details. I'll spend too long drawing just part of a building trying to get it 'perfect.' My personal solution to break from that when it's happening is I start doing color studies. I'll identify one thing and mix colors to match it- takes away all my opportunities for being a perfectionist but is still challenging and worthwhile to my learning.
Thanks Taria. I find it's helpful and less overwhelming for me to squint my eyes to see the composition easier, where the big lights and darks are. And it seems obvious now, but my best sketches are of my personal favourite locations and not necessarily a well-known tourist kind of place. Also, fear of making a mistake is probably the worst thing. Thanks for those two book recs. I have them both and are excellent.
Thank your for your honesty. So fun listening to your thoughts. I have actually used some of your tips and techniques in my own urban sketching. Enjoying your lessons trio course.
Excellent video and awesome points, Taria! I’m guilty of many of these but I’m learning. And I just bought your book. 😊 Thank you for your great content!

Can you share the link for the video you mentioned on negative/white space?

Thanks for these really important points- having struggled along for a while, I can agree with all of them !
What sketch book do you suggest?

And go to the symposium in Buenos Aires this year! I will be teaching this year! Really fun and meet sketchers from all over the world!
Can't wait to see you there Eileen!
