  • I live near La Canada and Continental, so this video is from this part of town. We got 1.27 inches of rain in just 26 minutes according to my neighbor Heinz who has a weather station. I would be interested to hear from other people in town how different areas were affected. I certainly hope there was no major damage. I know people are still dealing with damage from the hail storm a week or so ago. If you are not from Green Valley, or you are here part-time and currently somewhere else, please enjoy the video. I know the video is long, but if you choose to watch it, I do not think you will be bored. This storm may have been short, but it was pretty epic with frequent lightning (some excellent lightning shots), loud thunder, high winds and heavy rain!!! As I upload this video to youtube it is 11:30 pm my time and I am getting another thunderstorm and rain.

    25 years ago, we had a storm just like this. It occurred in early February. It brought 80MPH winds, torrential rain, very intense lightning and thunder. It was during the 1997-1998 El Nino. We were under a severe thunderstorm warning, high wind warning, a winter storm warning, a high surf warning, and a flash flood warning. Unfortunately, several people were killed in this storm. I remember there were numerous trees damaged as well as property damage to homes and businesses due to the high winds and flooding as well as numerous destructive lightning strikes. It also produced numerous power outages.

    Here in Southern California, we get storms like this in the wintertime, usually with El Nino, mainly in late December, January, February and early March. A storm this intense occurs mainly in February. Summer thunderstorms are rare. We get one every 4-5 years.

    And everyone should know….the insurance adjuster told me that while homeowner’s insurance covers water damage from roof, wall or broken window leaks or burst pipes it doesn’t cover water that might rise high enough to come into the house through a window or door. That’s called flood damage and you have to have flood insurance for that. So…make sure everything drains away from your house and has a way to get out through the wall if your yard is enclosed. Rising water is a flood and it’s not covered unless you buy flood insurance!

But man places like Tuscon and Phoenix has just been hit with severe storm after severe storm, I heard of that crazy storm that blew over a stand or sum, I don’t remember what it was but the winds I’ve seen all over social media from those storms were crazy. Thanks for watching and your comment! We have had huge thunderstorms all around us for several weeks now, but until a couple of weeks, none at my location in Green Valley, AZ which is about 25 miles south of Tucson. A week or so ago, we had a hellacious thunderstorm at my location with up to 2" hail, I have a video of that as well. Then the thunderstorm in this video a week or so later. The first one with hail caused a LOT of damage to roof and skylights, hundreds of them that I am aware of. When I started taking video of this storm, I did not think much would come of it because many storms cling to the mountains about 6 or 8 miles east of us. I think I even say that in the video, but boy was I wrong! We ended up with 1.5" of rain that day, and I am happy for the water as well as the show that storm put on!!!

    Making me homesick, I miss living in Arizona so much. I grew up in the hottest driest part too (the tri-state area, just south of Bullhead City.) Funny thing is, I’ve been living in New Orleans, Louisiana (the wettest state in the country) for the past 14 years, where heavy rain and thunderstorms occurs pretty much 2-3 times a week with only a rare occasional dry spell here and there during the summer. To this day, I still get excited and happy when a thunderstorm is about to hit. My Louisiana native wife and her family look at me like I’m from another planet hahaha!

    I knew you guys got hammered. We were driving home from Sahuarita and headed into it just before turning into QC, but we were on the edge of the most intense area. We picked up 0.41 inches, so only a third of what you had (we have a weather station in the yard as well). Another person in QC with a station about a mile and a half from us and closer to you got a bit over 0.6 inches. You were right in the heaviest part. With the decent monsoon this year, we’ve almost caught up with where we should be year-to-date. We’re at 5.08 inches cumulative versus 5.5 inches as ‘normal’ average. Although like last year, the winter was very dry and monsoon is ahead of normal. July is about a half inch above average with hopefully more to come today yet.

    I live in Canoa Canyon Estates which, as you are, is on the West frontage road. We’re not in the house because of extensive damage from the hail/wind and rain event. We’re at the Canoa Ranch Resort and in a 3rd floor room with a balcony facing North east and West. It’s an amazing view. We’ve watched the storms of this week with awe and just a bit of dread since the house roof still leaks. Enjoyed your video. We shot the storm from here the other night. Are you in GV Camera Club?

      While I do like a good storm Pam, I am sorry to hear that you home suffered extensive damage. Your view sounds amazing! Glad you enjoyed the video. I am not a member of GVR, so not in the camera club. It is just a hobby that I enjoy.

    That rainfall rate is the same we would get here in Illinois like some of the videos I posted recently. Wow. That is impressive for a desert. So awesome!

    Is property damage common this time of year with the storms?

    • @bartk85622
      @bartk85622  2 года назад

      Yes and no Mia. When we get a lot of rain in a short time, the main damage is erosion, then secondarily, roof leaks, and sometime wind damage in the for of trees down, etc. A few weeks ago, we had a short hail storm that has caused major damage to homes in town with broken skylights, damaged roofs and damaged cars plus some downed trees. We do not get hail very often, especially not up to 2" hail. One other thing is that we occasionally see damage from lightning strikes. You can read about it here: www.gvnews.com/news/tree-goes-up-second-storm-delays-recovery/article_8599d564-11c4-11ed-9e15-f720004866d9.html

    We live in the Fairways near the Haven Golf course...we got an inch but the rain gauge is slightly slanted so not sure how accurate. I always think I should add at least a tenth, given that. But a nice rain for sure!
