I love the scene. So well voice acted and animated. Not all sister relationships are perfect like Anna and Elsa, and they were able to capture the hilarious tension between two sisters who have resentment towards each other. It just makes the resolution all the more satisfying

I'm curious about their past together. Isabella makes it seem like somehow Mirabel has done nothing good for her ever. Which I find hard to believe.
So from someone said (i think this makes perfect sense), Isabella is held to the highest standards so she's expected to always be perfect. Her gift aids very much in this, and adds to her gracefulness. Mirabel doesn't have any gifts so no one has high expectations for her, so while Isabella is always pleasing everyone else trying to keep the perfection she's expected to show Mirabel tries to show off too. She's jealous cause she just wants to be treated normally and not held to any standards.
I mean, Mirabel hates Isabela just as much as Isabela hates her. In the beginning they go back and forth with who’s “in the way”. Mirabel tells Mariano that Isabela is weird too so I get the feeling they both had a rivalry
Plus, they're this kind of siblings that just can't stand next to each other for more than 3 seconds without ripping each other's hair. (and technically in original drafts of What Else Can I Do, those two did fight actually).
Older siblings will always be like "younger siblings ruin my life" because usually younger siblings are treated differently than the older ones, the older has a lot of pressure and high standards while the younger has it "easier", younger siblings may not leave you alone and just annoy you, the older siblings' general "I know better" can also get on younger sibling's nerves plus the fact that Mirabel didn't receive miracle meant that those who already possessed miracles had a pressure twice as hard as before because Mirabel is that one Madrigal who didn't get her gift. So yeah, it's understandable they hate each other.
I feel like mirabel may have made Abuela expect a lot more from Isabela cause she needs to be absolutely perfect in her eyes and that would've gotten worse when something so imperfect happened
In a deleted scene, Isa said something along the lines of "Don't tell on me this time"

Am I the only one who feels like Mirabel didn’t owe Isabella anything let alone an apology, because what the apology felt like was “sorry I was born!” I understand the pressure and forced stature Isabella had to take upon but in reality her little outbursts and mean comments toward Mirabel were her way of making herself feel better, like her rolling her eyes when Mirabel was clearly distressed about the house breaking and think she’s doing it for attention, though yes Mira could’ve handled it differently but hey it’s scary. Isabella still to this day remains my least favorite cousin of the Madrigals, but her argument with Mira here was not valid but petty.

I had a cousin exactly like this growing up. She (and sometimes her twin sister) were AWFUL to me and easily among the worst parts of my girlhood: comments to shut up, annoyance at my crying and shyness, anger at walking too slow (I had a history of walking too fast and was trying to avoid that by keeping in pace with them), once even snapping at me for getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.
She transferred to another school out of state at the end of our junior year, and I’ve never seen nor spoken to either of them in nearly a decade. That’s how I like it. In the last few years until then I had learned that they were reeling from learning something huge about their family of origin, and I still feel some pity for them today. Who knows what kind of Abuela was-maybe still is-overshadowing them?
Nevertheless, that still doesn’t change the fact that they kept choosing to resent me for existing and project their frustrations and self-loathing on me, especially because it was convenient. I wasn’t perfect and I had plenty of my own failings to answer for, but you don’t need to be flawless to be a victim.
We shouldn’t judge Isabela as a lost cause because she’s obviously under the same toxic environment, but it’s hard to feel sorry for her when, after years of seeing Mirabel suffer under the same source, often more flagrantly and with even fewer support, Isabella is claiming herself to be the biggest victim. She isn’t more decent or virtuous just because she hides her pain.
Your perspective is interesting! I don't know if I agree. I'm a perfectionist, so I relate to Isabela. At the same time, I've realized that anger isn't okay and that Isabela clearly needed help.

This scene made me hate Isabela. The fact that she accused Mirabel of "ruining" her life and gaslighted her made me mad! While I don't agree with the resentment that Mirabel had towards Isabela for being perfect but she doesn't accuse the whole family which shows how emotionally mature Mirabel is. I know their relationship was incredibly realistic because most siblings intend to hold grudges against each other which causes a rivalry between two siblings but this is complete narcissistic abuse.
I think Mirabel not getting gift put more pressure to Isabelle. It’s like Abuella sees Mirabel as useless so now let’s focus on perfecting Isabella to compliment that. Hence “ruining” her chance to slightly be more carefree.
It’s 100% abuella fault but Isabella can’t be mad at her. So the next best thing is channelling her anger to mirabel.
Isa was objectively wrong in blaming Mirabel.
But from her point of view (for example, what Isa saw during the meal with the Guzmans), Mira LOOKED guilty. Isa didn't have the same complete info as us.

Hey that’s what friends and sisters are for right
I was always wondered why Mirabel was low-key “ooc” with her reaction to Isabella’s confession - it was almost dismissive - then I realized it’s perfectly in character as Mirabel is too young to really understand the implications of it. Instead the two bonded over the realization that they got each other all wrong.
Isabella was jealous of Mirabel since she didn’t have the same expectations as her due to having no powers (equating to freedom)
Mirabel wanted expectations, a place in the family, but instead was excluded and even deemed ‘useless’ by Alma due to her lack of powers (equating to a curse).
Edit: A forced or unhappy marriage, especially in a culture or community where divorce is likely not an option or looked down on, would keep both parties unhappy. One even being unaware since Isabella is the master of ‘masks’. And with the expectations of children or ‘love’, marital r*pe and assault comes into the picture. Maybe Isa would have ‘learned’ to love Mariano but . . . imagine if she didn’t, the above doesn’t not paint a pretty picture. I feel like Mariano would have gotten it though since intercourse is where your most vulnerable. Not even Isa could keep up her mask then.
I don’t think it’s ooc as we see throughout the movie mirabel does not care for isabela in the slightest. I actually like that they made her so dismissive because it makes her character more real. The “perfect” protagonist would have been like “oh my god I’m so sorry i had no idea you felt that way that’s horrible” but mirabel is like “oh wow really? Ok hug me” she’s so set on her goal she isn’t even phased by the confession

Mirabel loves her sister but yeah, doesn’t really care for her. Not only because of their different familial status but also due to their age difference. It makes the characters more real and flawed. It makes them them relatable; I myself have sisters who are older than me by 10+ years.
It’s honestly fine that Mirabel seemed dismissive. She hadn’t truly seen a change in Isabella until they started bonding together during her song. And plus, that’s how siblings are sometimes lmao

Okay, can someone please explain what kind of actual standards Isabela has to uphold? Because, compared to everyone else, Isabela's problems aren't that sympathetic. I mean, what standards? Isabela's job is to literally just look pretty and grow flowers. How taxing it is to pose for people, do nothing, and grow mediocre flowers. I feel sooo bad for her terrible burden of having to do nothing her whole life. Luisa has to carry her family's and everyone else's burdens, Mirabel is literally powerless and feels she has to prove herself useful by pitching in whenever she can, Juileta has to fix meals for everyone a thousand times a day, Augustine has to take care of his wife and kids, and Isabela grows flowers. What does Isabela's perfect facade entail that gives her so much pressure and anxiety to hate or be jealous of anyone? To me, Mirabel's right, she is selfish.

You use the word powerless - does Isabella have any 'power' over her life? It wasn't her choice to grow flowers and look pretty, it's an expectation. She may have adoration, but no freedom. Mirabella may be an outsider, but she has freedom to do what she wants with her life, and she's allowed to fail and try something else. Isabella is also expected to be 'perfect', something that's literally impossible, but she has to try anyway.
The point of the film is that all of the family are trapped in roles and none of them have the freedom to choose what to do with their life. Isabella was so sure of this she was going to trap herself further into a marriage she didn't want. Mirabella wanted to be part of the family, but came to learn she was looking into a cage from the outside.
Isabela is held to the highest standard, to be perfect. Shes jealous because she cant have a normal life like others, instead, she has to marry someone she doesn’t even like and act like a good girl, be happy when she can’t.
